I’ve been to the “castle” and seen the crypt. I LOVE DC and the Smithsonian museums! The butterfly room in the museum of natural history was my favorite part of all museums combined!!

Generally, most artifacts held by museums with research facilities are not on public display. This is both for aesthetics and for space limitations. As well, some items are too fragile for display or are suffering from degradation from too much exposure to the elements. Quality museums are not freak shows.

I know Google was doing some museum walkthroughs with their street view tech, but I'm not sure which, if any, of the Smithsonian museums were included. They do have a fantastic online collection with photos of their objects, though, and it's pretty easy to navigate. (I'm on mobile at the moment or I'd been able to give more detail and concrete information.)

And you are correct, the pejorative "nip" is derived from Nippon, or Nipponese, which as I understand it is (or was) the "formal" name for Japan. And "jap" is derived from Japanese. Also, the term "scoche" or a scoche is derived from the Japanese word scochi, meaning a little bit.
