I was rejected by my childhood love around the age of 15, or... well, I never had the courage to confront her myself about it, despite being friends with her for years. But her friend told my friend she wasn't interested in me that way, so I tried to move on. Around ten years later, she tracked me down and contacted me randomly, to confess she had been in love with me the whole time, yet was scared to say so. But I didn't know why she had contacted me and mentioned I had a girlfriend at the time in my reply, so she never told me her feelings. Over ten more years later, I contacted her through social media to reconnect, and after a few weeks of emailing, I reminded her I had a crush years ago (because of something else that came up in our conversation), and she finally confessed to me. We've been together ever since. It took us over 20 years to find our ways back to each other, because we were both scared to ruin our friendship and talk about how we really felt. So I agree - take a chance and be honest. If nothing else, reconnecting with my friend would have brought good memories back to my life, but it ended up with a lot more.

I agree it's very interesting she remembers him not replying, talks about holding a grudge, and also refers to it as a "message in a bottle," all of which sounds like there were quite strong feelings there years ago, particularly for someone so young. The fact that they apparently stayed in touch via letters for 6 years after barely being alive for that long before separating is also huge - for kids, that's an eternity. I'm not saying at all that will happen here -- I'm just saying that if I were confronted with this situation on live TV, I'd be really hesitant too in my reaction. If anything, the fact that she's not more immediately affectionate to him could indicate an awkwardness coming out of deeper old feelings. First, this is making a lot of assumptions based on appearance. Maybe she's "out of his league," but he had no idea what she even looked like now. So it wasn't like he was fantasizing about some hot girl for years - all he remembered was a childhood friend. And for many people, appearance is important, but connection is also foundational in a long-term friendship or romance. And as for "hung up," she kept writing to him until she was age 11-12, over 5 years after they had last seen each other. That's an eternity in childhood! If she didn't have strong feelings (even if just friendly) it's very doubtful she would have kept in touch for so long, and the fact that she mentions a grudge and recalls him not returning her letter indicates she at least had deep feelings at that time. Maybe it's all a lost cause, but she still chose to pull back the curtain. I hope they are able to talk about what happened more honestly in private, and maybe they'll become friends again, maybe even more someday. Or not. I wish them both well, regardless.

I agree - I don't understand why the comment section is so negative. Everybody sees her as not interested in reconnecting, but she wrote to him for over 5 years after she last saw him, was clearly hurt a bit when he didn't respond to her last letter (which she still clearly remembers strongly), and (as you said) recognizes him immediately after not seeing him in 15 years. There are definitely strong feelings there from her from childhood -- whether friendship or something more. And I interpret her awkwardness at the end as not wanting to either get his hopes up or respond in a way that could be misinterpreted when she said she has a boyfriend, all of this happening on television. Note that she says the last time she wrote to him was when she was in Sixième, the first year of secondary school. She wrote to him apparently for 5-6 YEARS after they had been apart. For young kids who never saw each other, that's an eternity. There had to be some strong connection or feelings from her there too to keep writing for so long. I assume that's why they both also still remember each other - they kept thinking of each other for years and didn't really disconnect completely until age 11-12. That's a big difference, and being apart for so long while still thinking of the other can ironically sometimes make the memories stronger, as you're yearning for contact with the other person. And I don't know that he implies he never had another girlfriend or didn't ever explore elsewhere - he just says he's currently single and hasn't been able to forget her.
It's pretty simple to me. He hasn't had much luck with women and so he always had it in the back of his mind how nice of a love story it would be if they reunited after a long time like this and fell in love. So he gave it a shot, hoping that (even though unlikely) her romantic life has been the same as his. It's not that big of a deal.

No disrespect, Meredith is adorable, but on TV, she looks outstanding with the help of beauty salon (make up and hair done) plus fancy clothes. Watching her daily look at 5:15, we see she is a cute girl, but one of the kind we see everyday at streets on cities worldwide. So, I don't think that her look is what prevents Mathieu from having a chance. They had a childhood love bonding, which (theoretically) counts as an advantage for him. The "problem" (for him, mostly) is more towards her current status (after they lost contact, she carried on with her life and got a boyfriend, while he is the one who kept somehow attached to the past), the "long time no see" situation (specially from childhood to adulthood, when everything changes) and their unknow current personalities compatibility. I agree it's very interesting she remembers him not replying, talks about holding a grudge, and also refers to it as a "message in a bottle," all of which sounds like there were quite strong feelings there years ago, particularly for someone so young. The fact that they apparently stayed in touch via letters for 6 years after barely being alive for that long before separating is also huge - for kids, that's an eternity.
My guess is that she was surprised and not expecting him on this show, and if she really had that much emotion wrapped up in it all, it may be very hard for her to process at the moment, particularly in front of an audience and television. Also, having a boyfriend (if she did have feelings for him back then) would make it all more complicated, and I'm sure she wouldn't want to get his hopes up too much.

For my own part, a girl I was friends with and had a crush on for years - but never actually had a relationship with - reached out to me nearly a decade after we had last seen each other, which required a bit of tracking me down, as it was before modern social media. I replied pleasantly via email, but I was in a relationship at the time, and the conversation went nowhere. She replied again, but I never replied. (That was her "message in a bottle" moment, I suppose.)
Over a decade later, I thought of her, and I reached out, and the first thing she said to me is that she was sitting in the same place (at the same work desk) she was at when she read the last letter from me... 12 YEARS before. She played it all rather cool for a few weeks, but we emailed more, and then I finally was forced by the conversation to remind her of the crush I once had on her (which she definitely did know about at the time). And then she confessed all those years she had been in love with me, too, but was afraid to admit her feelings.
It's over five years later, she left her husband, and we're still together. It's been the most emotional connection I've had in a relationship. Stuff like that happens too in real life. In my situation, it took several weeks of email and her playing it rather "cool" before her feelings came out. I'm not saying at all that will happen here -- I'm just saying that if I were confronted with this situation on live TV, I'd be really hesitant too in my reaction. If anything, the fact that she's not more immediately affectionate to him could indicate an awkwardness coming out of deeper old feelings. OR she could just not be that interested in reconnecting, or is unsure and holding a grudge.
Regardless, I wish them both well, whatever happens.

First, this is making a lot of assumptions based on appearance. Maybe she's "out of his league," but he had no idea what she even looked like now. So it wasn't like he was fantasizing about some hot girl for years - all he remembered was a childhood friend. And for many people, appearance is important, but connection is also foundational in a long-term friendship or romance. And as for "hung up," she kept writing to him until she was age 11-12, over 5 years after they had last seen each other. That's an eternity in childhood! If she didn't have strong feelings (even if just friendly) it's very doubtful she would have kept in touch for so long, and the fact that she mentions a grudge and recalls him not returning her letter indicates she at least had deep feelings at that time.
Maybe it's all a lost cause, but she still chose to pull back the curtain. I hope they are able to talk about what happened more honestly in private, and maybe they'll become friends again, maybe even more someday. Or not. I wish them both well, regardless.

I agree - I don't understand why the comment section is so negative. Everybody sees her as not interested in reconnecting, but she wrote to him for over 5 years after she last saw him, was clearly hurt a bit when he didn't respond to her last letter (which she still clearly remembers strongly), and (as you said) recognizes him immediately after not seeing him in 15 years.
There are definitely strong feelings there from her from childhood -- whether friendship or something more. And I interpret her awkwardness at the end as not wanting to either get his hopes up or respond in a way that could be misinterpreted when she said she has a boyfriend, all of this happening on television. Maybe when they are alone and get a chance to talk, she'll open up more, maybe even be overwhelmed at the chance to reconnect. Or maybe she'll hold a grudge, despite his explanations. But everyone acting like she's immediately "friendzoning" him or just opening the curtain to be polite -- she cared enough about a boy to keep writing letters for FIVE YEARS. Has anyone here done that with a friend at that young of an age when never seeing the person again? That's incredible, right there.

Note that she says the last time she wrote to him was when she was in Sixième, the first year of secondary school. She wrote to him apparently for 5-6 YEARS after they had been apart. For young kids who never saw each other, that's an eternity. There had to be some strong connection or feelings from her there too to keep writing for so long. I assume that's why they both also still remember each other - they kept thinking of each other for years and didn't really disconnect completely until age 11-12. That's a big difference, and being apart for so long while still thinking of the other can ironically sometimes make the memories stronger, as you're yearning for contact with the other person.
And I don't know that he implies he never had another girlfriend or didn't ever explore elsewhere - he just says he's currently single and hasn't been able to forget her.
It's pretty simple to me. He hasn't had much luck with women and so he always had it in the back of his mind how nice of a love story it would be if they reunited after a long time like this and fell in love. So he gave it a shot, hoping that (even though unlikely) her romantic life has been the same as his. It's not that big of a deal.

No disrespect, Meredith is adorable, but on TV, she looks outstanding with the help of beauty salon (make up and hair done) plus fancy clothes. Watching her daily look at 5:15, we see she is a cute girl, but one of the kind we see everyday at streets on cities worldwide. So, I don't think that her look is what prevents Mathieu from having a chance. They had a childhood love bonding, which (theoretically) counts as an advantage for him. The "problem" (for him, mostly) is more towards her current status (after they lost contact, she carried on with her life and got a boyfriend, while he is the one who kept somehow attached to the past), the "long time no see" situation (specially from childhood to adulthood, when everything changes) and their unknow current personalities compatibility. But if they keep contact this time, who knows what the future holds? Good luck for them, sorting out the new situation in their lives! Anyway, as the TV host said: "Be happy, whatever happens!"
