What a powerful albeit extremely sad episode. Never watched anything with Lan Qin (don't remember her guest role from "The Ingenious One") until now but she did fantastic as the Empress. Will have to check some more stuff with her.

Here's what happened: 1) Xian's brother got sick in prison. 2) Xian had no money to pay for a doctor to visit him, so she tried to pawn her jewelry to pay for a doctor. Noble Consort Gao caught her & demanded that Xian become her lap-dog; when Xian refused, Gao spitefully destroyed the jewelry, leaving Xian with no way to raise funds. 3) Consort Chun heard of Xian's problem, and offered to gift her the funds...IF she agreed to join the Empress' side in the harem politics. When Xian declined to do so, Chun gracefully withdrew the offer. 4) When the Empress heard of the problem, she sent an Imperial doctor to treat Xian's brother. BUT, when Chun persuaded her that it looked like she was trying to buy Xian's support, she called the doctor back and thought of a way to legitimately get Xian the cash. 5) The Empress - after a delay - was able to set up a reason to legitimately gift Xian 500 taels of silver, more than enough to send excellent doctors. 6) Xian sent the money to her parents, with a letter explaining what to use it for. 7) Xian's mother insisted that Xian's father use the money to bribe Prince Yi (who'd arrested Xian's brother on corruption charges) to let the brother go. Prince Yi refused, and also tattled to the Emperor. 8) Xian's father was arrested, and in the chaos, her brother died of the (untreated) illness. 9) Xian's mother blamed her, called her a worthless daughter for not being willing to beg the Emperor for clemency, and committed suicide. If I had to blame any one person for Xian's brother's death, it would be...their mother. Ambitious enough to get the family into trouble with her demands for more, more, more! Stupid enough to insist her husband try to bribe an anti-corruption prosecutor. Vicious enough to blame the one person who's done everything to try to help, except abandon her own principles. While the Empress should not have recalled the doctor (which she later acknowledged), that's a small, small factor in the brother's death, and was very clearly not done out of malice.
