    Peak Design has re-designed the travel tripod. This one is legit folks. Featuring a 5 piece alternative design that goes from 5 feet down to the size of a water bottle, this is the tripod to get. By using a design that eliminates wasted space, you get a full featured tripod that doesn't compromise height, stability or features.
    Its also much faster to set up and fold down than other tripods - you can have the entire unit unfolded and ready to deploy in under 10 seconds. The tripod comes with Peak's standard ball-head as well as their standard Arca-Swiss compatible mounting plate. There's also a mobile mount for phones and a dual hex tool for attaching the standard plate or tension adjustment of the locking clips.
    Peak Design put 4 years into designing this tripod. Its extremely well built and you can see the thought and passion that went into this unit. Available in Aluminum and Carbon Fiber

    There are a large number of comments from people offended by the pricing on these tripods. Peak Design have an incredibly interesting blog post detailing the entire process of how these are made and why the price is what it is. journal.peakdesign.com/sticker-shock
    I also think a lot of people buy cheap tripods on Amazon and don't actually use them daily for anything demanding. The PD tripod is not cheap, but its not the most expensive either. High end tripods often run over $1000 and thats for the legs only. Head costs extra.

      Personally my concern isn’t the price absolutely, but it’s price relative to quality and relative to competitors. I doubt you can give an impartial answer since this is sponsored, but I do wonder how much of the price is due to quality (does it match or exceed $600 offerings from Manfrotto or Gitzo?) and how much is due to the brand, hype, and aesthetics (it does look great).

    • @ImpulseVigil
      @ImpulseVigil 4 года назад +1

      @@zachpw The Center Column might not be totally impartial either (I think they were consulted during it's design?) but FWIW they do have empirical testing of how it holds up against models from Gitzo, RRS, Sirui, etc. Finding their review was one of the things that made me take another look at the PD tripod, which I had initially dismissed. (no pano rotation was a turn off for one, but I figured out a workaround for that)

      I'm not offended by the price, if thats what Peak Design wants to sell it for. However if I bought one, I would not use it for travelling unless, it was put it in the back of the car, go some where get it out use it, then put it back. For me a travel tripod gets taken with me, on flights, on the train, round the city and if it got lost or damaged, its a lot of money. But some people can afford this. On the other hand there are some good tripods out there, from good makes and they are a lot cheaper, without going to the bargin basement Amazon or ebay specials.

      It doesn't seem any higher than the other real nice tripods on the market. It is a lot of money sure, but Peak Design makes great stuff so I don't mind paying for their quality.

      I have been using the Manfrotto 2n1, which is a great travel tripod. It ran me $220. Manfrotto makes great quality tripods at very fair prices, often below the competition. I just received my Peak Design Travel Tripod in Aluminum, and I have to say it was worth every penny. While the Manfrotto is great, it's nowhere near as stable as the Peak Design, it is much bulkier (though about the same weight), the Peak Design uses metal where the Manfrotto uses a lot more plastic, and the Peak Design has an overall better design with their classic attention to detail. I need a tripod that works 100% of the time, but that also is as portable as possible while being extremely functional. I really think that $350 for the aluminum and $600 for the Carbon Fiber is actually a low price for this tripod. Many tripods with similar build quality cost significantly more. This is not to mention that it comes with a lifetime warranty, which they really do stand behind, meaning you can count on this lasting the rest of your photography career.

      Magnitude Reviews Solid point. Your tripod is never going to be the most crucial factor in a great photo. I lug out 120 and 35mm gear in the mountains. Saving weight isn’t always an option, but being fit enough to get there is.

      I thought the same thing, too expensive! But after I finally had enough lenses, and other camera gear, I finally bought the Peak Design tripod. It really is a great tripod. If you are going to eventually buy a carbon fiber tripod for travel, this is the one to get. The only thing is, Peak Design needs to come out with a matching video head for it. I use mine mainly for video, so I have to screw a small video head to it. I have other travel tripods, but they are too bulky compared to the Peak Design one, and they are a lot harder to setup. When you get to the point where you have enough camera gear, treat yourself to a carbon fiber Peak Design tripod..

    Mine shipped out, looking forward to comparing it vs my current Sirui T-1205X + Sunwayfoto XB-28 II combo... Having read The Center Column's review and tests, the price doesn't really give me sticker shock, but I can see why it would for many.
    Against the combo I was using (for around ~$300) it's still kind of a lateral move... It's taller, I'm expecting it to be somewhat more stable, it's a little heavier, but it should take up less space, trade-offs eh. I wish they'd managed to fit panning in the head.
    It does look like it's quicker to deploy and sleeker in use (less knob turning and leg flipping). If I like it enough vs my current setup, I'll just stack a Sunwayfoto panning clamp atop the PD head when needed.

    I really like Peak Design and their design ethos and how they are so innovative. I have a Manfrotto 055CX4 which I hardly ever take out because I rarely have the opportunity any more to go on a dedicated photo trip, and it's too big to take on a casual shoot where I might just need it. For travel, I have been using a cheap and small Sirui that folds down to about 31cm long, but I can't really use that for long exposures. So, the Peak Design could be the right tripod for me, but I'm doing less landscape type photography now, so it's going to be hard for me to justify the cost at the moment....

      The clamp on the tripod will accept either ARCA plates or PD's own plate... If you're talking about the PD Capture Clip then no, that will only accept their plate (or something compatible with it like 3LT's Ellie L plate). You could just use the PD plate for everything, since it'll fit into standards ARCA clamps.

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 4 года назад

      You don't see apple making these kind of donations though. So it's exclusively companies that make that decision too. And they consistently attempt to do eco conscious choices, which does also make them more expensive. And unlike Manfrotto, they make a new concept, which is very expensive, and only sell that one or two things in that category, instead of dozens of variations of the same product with ever confusing but cheaper alternatives. But yeah, Manfrotto are good enough, but if you want to get the exact thing, and feel good about the company behind it, because of their choices as a company, then sometimes spending more makes sense. And I say this as. someone who won't buy this tripod because it's not worth it for me.

      Another alternative to replacing the whole head would be clipping a pano clamp unto the existing head (combo is still less bulky than most heads would be in it's place)... Since the head/stem is reversed you can level with the PD head and pan with the clamp.
      Something like the Sunwayfoto DDH-07N or 05N comes with ARCA dovetails on the bottom expressly for that purpose (23mm tall, about an extra 123g)... This is the best workaround I've found anyway for what I see as the biggest con against the Peak tripod. I really would've preferred a 1-1.5" longer folded length if it meant pano functionality built in via another ring.

    The thing that concerns me is the hex key to attach the plate. It’s too easy to lose small removable parts and even if you are the most diligent user who would never misplace such a thing, I cannot see how this can compete with a D ring for convenience of use. Otherwise it looks excellent.

      David Sandall then buy an arca plate with the fixing of your choice. I use the PD plate most of the time but my RRS L-bracket fits perfectly as well. This is the joy of not being forced down a proprietary path.

    • @surrogatemarker
      @surrogatemarker 4 года назад

      At first I didn’t like the hex for all the reasons you mention.. however the tightness and torque you can get with a hex with Peak supplied tool over a flat head screw or d ring just doesn’t match what you can achieve with a hex.. Peaks hex tool attaches snugly to a sleeve on on one of the legs.. so you are not likely to lose it.. it took me a while to appreciate the Peak tripod since it so different.. not for everybody, but it is incredible light, sturdy and takes very little space in or attached to you camera bag.. but at a price many would not feel worth it until they used it for a while.. I’m keeping it

    I carried this tripod ( carbon fiber version ) on the very rough and steep Pīpīwai trail In Haleakala national park on Maui, Hawaii for over 5 and half miles round trip .. and I found myself thanking peak design after the first quarter mile of the Hike.. yes it’s expensive, and if you mostly pull a tripod out of your car trunk and walk a flat trail for only 100-300 feet, then by all means, buy a decent cheap tripod for under $150.. otherwise, shut up over the price..

    • @jambononi
      @jambononi 4 года назад

      Haha brutal. But yeah, it's true. If you need exactly what it offers then it's perfect. I have the Befree Live from Manfrotto and do really like it, but probably wouldn't take it on a hike. It's more of a "might not need a tripod but want one on me" kind of situation.

  • @Black3ternity
    @Black3ternity 4 года назад

    Hmmm.... I'm running around this tripod for nearly 6 month now and I am not sure if I want to pull the trigger on that.
    I currently own a pretty solid Cullmann tripod. Aluminium. Weighs 1.5kg and is big, sturdy and has three cam-levers.
    Yeah it's no travel-tripod so there is that.
    I'm an enthusiast so it would not be a daily driver. But it would replace my current tripod which cost me around 130 bucks.
    So there is a hefty price-up for that. But I understand it. I looked at Manfrotto Tripods in carbon fiber and they weigh more than my current one in aluminium. Bummer.
    So the peak design really, REALLY sparks my interest.
    Unfortunately, I cannot really find useful information on these tripods because ALL "reviews" or showcases I have seen are sponsored - and most of my questions remain unanswered.
    1) There are FIVE sections. Is there any stability left in the last ones? They look really flimsy and I have not seen anything in carbon fiber so I have no Idea if that is still fine.
    2) I've seen that the center column can be shortened. (I don't like this big column because I often get down low). Can I still store the phone-holder in the short section?
    3) How is it for daily use? "As compact as a water bottle" sadly doesn't mean anything to me because my "cheapo" tripod seems as thick/thin as this one.
    4) I've seen complains of the twist-lock of the ball-head. Is it interfering with the lock-lever for the quick release in any way in real life? So are you accidentally moving one when turning the other because they are so close together?
    I really want to buy this product but unfortunately, I am a bit hesitant to spend this much money on a product that I can only buy online and I can only see sponsored videos of. :-(
    Cheers and thanks for the video.

    I think the design is pretty neat, but I can't get over the design of the underside of the ball head. Tony Northrup mentioned it in his video about it, and about the fact that you can only go portrait on one side, otherwise you'd have to turn the camera around on the head. I understand that it's a small thing that can easily be ignored by most users, but it would be nice to have that option open.

    • @surrogatemarker
      @surrogatemarker 4 года назад

      Vsmit00 Tony N got a pre-production unit and from what I can tell, many of the things that annoyed Tony, but not all, were addressed in the final shipping product. I have used many tripods, some beefier and more expensive than the Peak Design one.. my rule of thumb is.. if I have a need to carry a tripod more than a quarter of a mile, the big one stays home and the carbon fiber Peak version gets to go with me..

    Great tripod, I was one of the original backers so I received a $200 discount. Been looking into a good pro quality tripod for travel. There are definitely more expensive ones out there that don't compact as easily. This tripod is probably not for the novice or casual amateur because it is at a price point that is geared to more professional applications IMO. If your just starting out, or just shoot casually, you can get a great tripod for that at a much lower price point, you'll just have to compromise some features and materials etc.. But it has some cool accessories like spikes for out door use, you can remove the telescopic legs and just use it as a tiny tripod with different attachments for the feet (all which can be done with many other tripods so that's a subjective observation). My main thing is that it packs down small enough for ultralight backpacking (at least as ultralight as you can go carrying camera gear) to remote locations which was the main reason I went with this one. But again, I would classify it as specialized equipment and probably not for everyone. But for certain people, it's a must have.
    Glad to see they are being proactive and donating funds. Always good to see companies doing that!

    Would this work for long lenses too heavy for me to hold? I am used to a gimbal.

    • @davidlewis5929
      @davidlewis5929 4 года назад +1

      You will not have the full flexibility that you have with a gimbal (or traditional ballhead +sidekick). The issue is how the plate fixture covers the ball there are angles which you just cannot use as the plate fixture fingers hit the column. With a gimbal when you want to look away or let go of the camera (as long as you have your setup correct) you are not worried about the camera making some wild movement and crashing about but with this head you would need to lock it in place before releasing the camera.
      I really wanted this to work as a kind of replacement for a gimbal but it just doesn't.

      I wouldnt trust that head with anything, let alone heavy equipment.
      This is a travel tripod for the insta-mirrorless-small lenses crowd. It might be great at that. Just 2x the price it should be.

      I don't think this tripod is worth 600 but there definitely are cases that demand tripods that expensive and higher.
      A friend of mine has a $2000 tripod but he does a lot of high end realest photography and shoots 8x10 in his free time.
      In studio, I use a 15 foot counterweighted stand that was probably worth 5k when new.

      True, Dean! FYI, I found a Chinese brand called Leofoto, that makes an Amazing travel tripod, AND it includes a fantastic ball head with one feature that I've not found INCLUDED on any other ball head...namely, a panoramic head! This allows the single ball head to function as a pano head, plus, if you swing it into the notch, turns the pano head into a "poor man's " gimbal head! (Max payload = 22 lbs.) Also, another feature of this tripod/head combo, is that the knobs/controls on the ball head each have a different shape and texture (ALL metal, CNC aluminum)! Simply ingenious design, because it eliminates the possibility of inadvertently loosening the wrong knob!! Why ALL ball head manufacturers don't do this is beyond me...actually, probably because of design and manufacture costs! In any case, this Leofoto LN-254CT Tripod is awesome...10X carbon fiber legs, included quality metal spikes (with rubber gaskets), included handy carabiner allen tool, and a very nice carrying case. Well worth $380, IMHO.

    The fact that this tripod can fit into a water bottle pocket is freaking amazing, but the price just makes it entirely unattractive. For $600, I’d rather purchase a mid range lens, or even just a truly heavy duty tripod considering I already have a mefoto backpacker that was $150 and comes with a case that I don’t mind carrying around.

That said, this is a bit much and since I don't really travel all that much (at least no on planes), I generally just throw my current travel tripod in the jeep and roll on. And Kudos to PK for the relief efforts donations being made.

    Nice intro, but why does NOBODY mention the MAJOR FLAW of this PD tripod??? IT CANNOT DO A LEVEL HORIZONTAL PAN!!!!!!!! As a landscape (and product) photographer, THAT is the dealbreaker for me...along with the astronomically high price for what it is. As one who desires image sharpness and detail in his images, I frankly value a tripod with some weight to it, AND the ability to do level panning. And I'd love to see the number of photographers who actually use their cell phone on a tripod, when most of them have image stabilization anyway. I love PD straps and other accessories for their quality and functionality, but one more thing...Why does every reviewer demo a tripod with the center column fully extended?? As we all know, that position is the MOST UNSTABLE configuration on ANY tripod. Personally, I always use my tripod with center column NOT extended, or only slightly so as needed, for optimum stability. Thanks, and be safe!

    I can tell you right now that the ball head is the weakest link in this tripod. Any device that uses tension to grip a ball head WILL wear out and start to slip. Being so exposed to the elements to collect dust and moisture will render this feature useless in time. Further tightening will only speed up it's failure and just break. Cam levers suffer the same kind of fate. Finally, unless you're independently wealthy or plan to write it off as a tax exemption to mitigate the cost, no one is going to travel with an expensive tripod that can easily be lost or stolen.

      It’s crazy ! and it’s a travel tripod . I love teds videos but the reality is most RUclips channels have been giving it for free they probably wouldn’t buy if they had to spend there money . Peak design Pitch to people that watch RUclipsrs . I bought one of There straps when they first came out and I never really got on with it so I returned it and I’ve tried their bags in the store with all my own stuff in them and I can’t justify their prices for what they deliver. The quality is no better than a lot of other manufacturers a fraction of the cost.

    • @vikmanphotography7984

      While I do think the price is too high, I must also say that no Manfroto tripod is this light and small while still having all these features. (Also I hate that Manfroto uses a proprietary plate)
      I definitely will never buy this tripod and will happily take something half the price for a little extra weight but I do own a PD backpack and 2 straps. Honestly, I just like that PD stuff actually fits my body type and can hold more than a single lens (most camera bags made for women would not serve the needs of a professional)

    OK, so let's get this straight... Peak Design, an already established, cash rich company, use kickstarter money (other people's money) to manufacture a new tripod, then expect you to pay 600 usd? There's only one winner here and it's not the consumer. I come from the road cycling world and own several high end carbon road bikes and wheelsets. They're fantastic machines but the weight differences between a modern aluminium frame (such as the CAAD) and a carbon frame aren't that great. Which is to say that for such a small product, like a travel tripod, the weight differences are negligible. Unless, that is, they have deliberately increased the weight of the aluminium tripod to create a defined hierarchy in the range. As unscrupulous as that may sound, it's not an uncommon practice. People see carbon and think it's some sort of voodoo, when it really isn't. There are hundreds of factories churning out 100s of miles of standardized CF tubing daily. Costs of manufacturing CF aren't what they used to be. It's an old technology. And 600usd for a tripod that was funded on kickstarter is a complete rip off. Sorry.

      Except they're not tubes. They're geometrical shaped so they require a layering process that's actually quite difficult.
      They have a pretty detailed blog post that explains exactly how they're made and where the cost goes. journal.peakdesign.com/sticker-shock
