Definitely a greenhouse. If you had to buy those doors and windows it would cost you a pretty penny. You could have a door on each end with the longer windows on each side of the doors and shorter windows on the sides. Just a thought. I'm sure you all will figure out a plan.😊
Hey Sean, this is Pat again from over near Dandridge, just want to let you know about our lack of mosquitoes here at our house. We have a flock of swallows that nest and raise their their babies in our yard (1acre). My husband has several blue bird houses in our yard and the swallows like to nest in them. They swoop over our yard, catching bugs in mid air all summer. We absolutely have no mosquitoes!! It really is amazing! Plus
Linda here…another excellent video, as always. Regarding layers…we kept 2 flocks but kept them all together. The key was colored leg bands. Zip ties work fine. When egg production fell, it was the older flock (based on leg band color) that was put in the freezer. Just an idea.
My vote for the future of the windows is greenhouse. Try watching old gardening videos of Roots and Refuge to see their recycled windows greenhouse for inspiration.
On the subject of pigs, I know that Kunekune pigs are smaller and take longer to grow out. They have the best demeanor of any pig I’ve ever been around, are very gentle on the pasture, and require far less commercial feed than other pigs. I get my breeding stock from a farm in eastern Tennessee (Crossville) who raise and sell kunes and they really are the easiest pigs to raise of any I’ve been around. I’ve been raising pigs for close to five decades now so that’s saying something about pigs. 👍💪🙌🙏🌈✌️🐽🐷🐖
Hi Sean, a friend of mine built a large tool shed out of old solid wood doors. It’s unique because the doors were not the same design. A greenhouse of old glass doors and windows is a great way to recycle. I have seen beautiful green houses made this way. Love your family and enjoy your videos. ✌🏻❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸PA
A greenhouse would definitely be a practical use of all those windows and doors. You would get a longer growing season. On the subject of mosquitoes ,they are attracted to CO2. Make traps with sugar water and yeast and set them away from where you hang out. Bats are also a great addition to the landscape as an organic bug control .
The Boss of the Swamp @ off grid cabin living channel built bat houses ( like bird houses ) and it helped with keeping the mosquito population down. Also, try growing plants that attract dragon flies, monarch butterflies, humming birds, lady bugs, praying mantis, needle flies and naturally repel mosquitoes by their scents. If you do this through out your back pasture, you will have an array of bug eaters and pollinators!
Yes on the greenhouse! For socks, wool wicks away the moisture, unlike cotton. Merino wool is the best! Thanks for the updates. Can't wait to see pigs on the Yeostead.
Jason from Sow the land raises Kune kune pigs and they do take 20 to 24 months to grow out and they are still a small pig. Ben at Hollar Homestead raises American Guinea Hogs but I can't recall the grow out time but they do have an abundance of lard. I know you know them both, so you might get some feed back on their breeds. A green house would be ideal use for the window. I'll bet you and your dad could come up with a plan for one. Good luck putting together a plan for a nice green house. Even if you only use it to get plants started for your garden. Y'all have a Blessed day.
The American Guinea Hog takes about the same amount of time to grow out as a kune kune. I've heard Idaho Pasture Pigs are a faster growing pig that isn't too hard on the landscape.
I had good luck with the dunks in Colorado with my small fish pond. However, I’m not sure they work everywhere. Loved seeing Holly and Henry in your video. You have such a lovely family. It’s good to see each one of them when they come on to the video
Donna here, you never said if you replenished the dunks in the buckets when you didn't see them anymore. i live in Louisiana where we call mosquitos yard birds and I use those dunks every summer. Also, our mosquitos lay eggs in fresh rain water too. (I use it to water my plants) The only place that they don't work is where there are a lot of leaves in low lying areas that stay moist but not with standing water. It also helps to rub a Bounce sheet on exposed skin. I used to use it on the kids and then tie it on their wrist when they went out. I have seen other people say that swallows and bats take care of the problem and we have them too, but I think we have an over abundance of mosquitos for the amount of birds and bats that we have. Good luck
Those windows and doors would make a great greenhouse! Jess and Miah built two, one on their homestead in Arkansas and a second one on their homestead in South Carolina. I'm sure they have videos showing that. Roots and Refuge ❤
This does not help with water freezing but here is an idea I use on my water tank in Mexico. To know how much water is within we float a plastic water jug half-filled with water inside the tank. The jug is tied to a fishing line which is threaded through the top and attached to a fist-sized rock. As the tank fills, the rock lowers along the side of the tank. As the tank empties the rock rises, announcing the approximate water level. Nice freight elevator you have on the front of that tractor. You are a smart cookie. Placing various-sized windows into a coherent building is a bit tough but can be done if enough advanced planning is done. For pigs I would not only sister up the studs, but would add some 2X6s horizontally on the inside to keep the aggressive little piglets from pushing against the exterior siding. So glad you had a good thanksgiving with a. tender and juicy turkey. Have yourself a very merry Christmas.
Mosquitoes love me too. Our neighbor put up Purple Martin bird houses. The next year they had Alot of them, purple martins . I did noticed a decrease in mosquitoes . This even more of a decrease of mosquitoes this year. I want a purple martins bird houses now.
20"-30" of snow and more is coming in the U.P. We only got a dusting. 12°~16° in SE . BLESSED THANKSGIVING WEEKEND. December 1st. all ready. Henry is amazing. Doing so much all day long. Speaks well. Handsome young master. GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU.
I actually just purchased 15 pairs last night! (lots of workers in the family). I switched from Bombas this year for them. I give wool socks to the kids and spouses for Christmas each year. If they work out, I wish they'd branch out with some nice "girl" colors - blue, purple, burgundy? Honestly I'd let the boys wear these colors too. For me (66 year old granny who needs worker socks too) the colors would make me happy. I wish I'd known that you'd review them today! Save the windows. I pretty much always think that for vintage wood windows. I love them so much :) It's one of my regrets with my 1850 home. Greenhouse? sun porch? glass winter house? My chickens aren't laying much. It's pretty cold here, and dark. As soon as my husband starts butchering deer (like now) I put the bones and scrap meat/fat/gross stuff in cast iron on the woodstove. I feed it to the chickens for extra protein to help them grow back their feather. Typically by February I have more eggs again. I also pressure can it in small jars for the chickens and barn cats during the winter.
I have an aquarium heater in my house tote. The directions say not to leave it out in freezing weather, but I did anyway. Worked fine last year. I only had a couple of hours of frozen spigot. I don't have that 'sock'. I have a stock tank heater in the stock totes. Had to cut a hole in the top to fit it in. Don't understand why someone hasn't made one to fit in the water totes. Use the windows for a greenhouse! You NEED a greenhouse and that would give you an almost free one.
The mosquito dunks actually do work, but only if those buckets are your sole water source. Homesteads frequently have old tyres, corrugated iron sheets, tin cans, tarpaulins, even plants such as bromeliads, which can all provide perfect mozzie breeding grounds. Oh, did I mention old pig wallows? Bromeliads are banned in some countries for this very reason, due to malaria mosquitoes.
Put metal sheets all the way around the walls, pigs will chew on wood. I think you could use the old windows for some part of a greenhouse. Electric bug zappers worked great for me in Canada, the mosquitoes love me also
Hey Yeoman Sean. Me thinks we should get you a toenail clipper set for Christmas !!! If your toes are eating your socks, then the first thing we look at is the length of the nails and the edge of them as well, if they are rough, you will eat socks quickly. PIGS: Feed Costs. If you grind your own corn (Vevor Corn Grinder) and you can get bulk feed instead of buying feed bags, food scraps are good too. You want to make sure, you aren't breaking the bank for a little BACON, right ?? And however many piglets you go for, you need a holler for cooling, a hutch for them to get out of the sun, arable land where they can root through the dirt. (Fall Line Ridge AND The Pasteurized Homestead) all got rid of their pigs. Too much money and they became just too much to handle on top of cattle, farming, and now (Pasteurized) they are gonna have a baby in a few months now. So they sold the piglets they bred, and had their large pigs processed for them. So before you consider pigs again, double check the budget you would be working from. You are also renovating the attic, right ?? Money don't grow on trees, NO ? Daddy used to say: PRIOR PLANNING PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE !!
The dunks definitely work to kill the larva, you can see the larva die in a matter of hours, but if y'all have other bodies of water near by the Dunks won't hinder the mosquito population enough to notice.
I feel Holly's pain about the tiger mosquitos. I'm allergic to them, so when bitten, I get horrible itchy weals and welts that swell SO much. I also get bullseye rashes from them. I seldom go out when they're around during the summer and fall. I haven't tried the clip-on bug repellent, but nothing else seems to work. The county sprays in our neighborhood, but it doesn't really make much difference.
That many doors and panels and windows is treasure for sure now if it was just a few of them OK, but that is really great. I would definitely do a greenhouse. You can even space them out with a little bit of wood and then glass or you know, make it big start your seeds in there bring the delicate plants in it like a citrus tree or something, make it a good size floor 10 x 10 x 15 you got a really good DIY
wellll, we hung up those scent trap bags for mosquitoes and WOW they work like a hot doggon! careful, though, don't bump into one (ours were near our grandkids' trampoline, hangin in the trees) cause they stink to high heaven!! good luck!
I use submerged heaters in the totes and heated dog bowls for water. Also you need to put the mosquito dunks in water sources around the property, the dunks only kill the larva before they hatch so if you have ponds and water sources around you need to put the dunks in there. Also if you ever get knats in indoor plants throw mosquito dunk in a watering can and use that to water the plant.
Hello 👋 Sean and family, I used a natural essential oils spray this past summer called Nantucket spider. I used it all of mosquito season and was pleasantly surprised by its effectiveness. Cate found it at our local grocery store, but I also found it on Amazon. I think I suggested it to you around the time you bought the buckets and wafers 👍💪🙌🙏🌈✌️🐽🐷🐖I’m sure you have gotten numerous ideas for the windows, but I like your idea of making a greenhouse out of them. I have a local guy who installs windows and has many of them lying around and has offered them to me for hauling them out of his yard. Blessings to you and your family stay safe and have a wonderful day
If I had those windows and doors at my house, I would by hook or by crook, have a greenhouse in my backyard! Build one, please! There are plants that mosquitoes do not like. Citronella is one, but there are others. Strategic planting in the spring may help the bug problem.
Those dunks do work, i use them at my house. If you put half a dunk even a whole one in your 5 gallon bucket they will work. You didn't put in enough, they put out an oil type of chemical on the top of the water. When the larva comes to the top to get air, they come in contact with the oil and it smothers them and they die. Most mosquitoes dont need a bucket of water, any place in the yard that has water sitting in it adter it rains they will deposit their young in there. The best thing to do with buckets is to have them upside down so that water doesn't get in. You didn't know what to do with all the doors. Use them for the walls in the pig pen. The windows are your treasure to build a greenhouse , you might want clear plastic panels for the roof but the windows for side walls. You can find many made from windows greenhouses online to get ideas.
Kunekune pigs ,,you have so much pasture for them and they are mild mannered but take two years to grow out high lard yield . Safe for Henry I took a four year in to pet ours regularly
Would you get more use out of a greenhouse or a bunch of cold frames? The greenhouse is likely to be pretty small, and there's a lot of work building framing to hold the windows. Where as for cold frames, you can just about use the windows just as they are, it's a very minimal amount of work and can easily be moved about and applied wherever you need them.
Aww shame the doughnut thingies didn't work 😢 UK here so no Thanksgiving but we have had below 0 temperatures here where we are I believe -5 on one night.
Treasure, Sean. I thought greenhouse before you even said it. Some of Roots and Refuge farm early videos may help when Miah was building one at their last place. Mosquito dunks- standing water only, not a bucket full of stuff, 1 whole dunk, per bucket. But who knows w those super Bill Gates skeeters.
I would not throw the windows away. Don't think you would get much for them..I would build a structure around the windows for a greenhouse.. Much less expensive ❤❤❤❤❤

I googled make a greenhouse out of windows and there are some really good videos on building a small one from start to finish. Worth a look.
Bat boxes, birdhouses for swallows, and the dragonflies can be a big help with mosquitoes. I know how Holly feels!😊

🙋🏼♀️🕊. Definitely have a good think on it. With the ladies and Dad. ( green house ) they are nice widows. 🍀🍀🍀 good luck

Yes, definitely make a greenhouse. A lot of people are doing that these days with old windows that would be fantastic.

if you get pullets in July, they start Laying in December - just a suggestion of course.
🇦🇺Use the windows for a seed starting room. Or a hot house for tropical fruit trees.
Clove is a good repellant for mosquitos.
If your tractor does not have a block heater you should install one, easier on the machine if you plug it in when it’s cold.
Make a greenhouse with the windows.
The dunks definitely work to kill the larva, you can see the larva die in a matter of hours, but if y'all have other bodies of water near by the Dunks won't hinder the mosquito population enough to notice.
On those super cold nights you could put a “hot hands” in that insulator cup. It should stay warm for like 8 hours.
❤ nice update. Happy Thanksgiving

I'd encourage you to look into bat houses and marten houses for mosquito control. Once established they can help keep mosquitoes down a lot.
You could make a NICE greenhouse and cold frames from those
greenhouse for sure hugsss

Aww shame the doughnut thingies didn't work 😢
UK here so no Thanksgiving but we have had below 0 temperatures here where we are I believe -5 on one night.
I vote “Greenhouse”. (for those windows)
Treasure, Sean. I thought greenhouse before you even said it. Some of Roots and Refuge farm early videos may help when Miah was building one at their last place. Make a greenhouse with the windows and doors… no don’t replace the chicks! Lol
Window Greenhouse
I would not throw the windows away. Don't think you would get much for them..I would build a structure around the windows for a greenhouse.. Much less expensive ❤❤❤❤❤
Build bat boxes around your property as they eat alot of mosquitoes.
No Sean chickens heard you when you said they being slaying of and you getting new ones they telling no way not under their watch 😂😂
The green house would be great, You got all the material right there in the window and doors, clean them up and bet you and your Dad will see that it can be built,
I'm a mosquito magnet too!! Argh! Sorry your experiment didn't work. I am not a carpenter, so I probably shouldn't be giving my two cents, but it sure seems like that barn area is salvageable with some reinforcement. Those doors and windows are awesome! I've seen videos of people repurposing doors and windows to make greenhouses and other things.
Free Green house
Bird and bat houses
You definitely have enough stuff to build a greenhouse
🧡💚🩵
People put up bat houses around house, bats feed on mosquitoes.
green house for sure! check out fellow Homesteaders "Roots and Refuge Farm" they did window greenhouse!
Please be careful storing glass (windows/doors) overhead. The rafters in my brothers garage came down with dozens of panes of glass up there. Thank God no vehicles or humans were below when it came down. !
Do the socks keep your feet warm? I didn't see any women's sock sizes. I am hard on socks also.
Merino wool socks keep your feet toasty warm in winter and somehow cool and dry in summer. We live in an area of Scotland which gets lots of hikers year round, and they all swear by merino wool boot socks.
Just take care washing them!
How about bat houses
Avons original skin so soft oil.Keeps off ticks, chiggers & mosquitos.
