Good question. Ideally you would be staggering both wheel/tire, but even with a wider tire, you'll see some advantages if you can take advantage of that wider contact patch. However, there are too many variables here to really able to say whether it would be beneficial or not on it's own.

How about wider tires up front but not wider wheels. Say 215/45/16 up front and 205/45/16 on the rear. For a autocross civic.

RS3’s from factory come with reverse staggered tires. Square wheels.
