"Cannon" TV Intro

  • I thought I’d already posted this TV intro, but apparently not. So here’s the main title sequence from “Cannon,” the 1971-1976 CBS drama starring William Conrad as Frank Cannon, a former Los Angeles police detective who “retired after the deaths of his wife and son in a car accident and later became a private detective.” Cannon was a notably hefty gent who indulged in good food, fine wines, and pricey automobiles. Learn more at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.o...
By the way, this version of the “Cannon” opener comes from the second season episode “To Ride a Tiger,” which originally showed on February 14, 1973.

One reason TV shows are different now is because they are only 40 min. long without the ads. So the editing has to be faster. You can have an "NCIS" but you can't have a "Cannon".

I was a little kid, when this show debuted. I always wondered how the image of Cannon, (in the "outro" with the red background not yelow, not shown here), was produced. It looks like a dot-matrix newsprint image, but it's not. It's much lower resolution, but still retains detail. The dots also get smaller, from one side, to the other. Not unlike the dots, on the edge of a car's windshield.
I just read an article about the early days of facial recognition and that image meshes with that article perfectly. I wonder if This is how that image was produced? This was very National Security sensitive stuff, in 1971.

Good show, I always enjoyed it - still do sometimes late at night on MeTV. I don't think they spent much on this theme. In the days of such great detective show theme songs as Barnaby Jones (and Police Story, which is pretty much the same song), Hawaii 5-0 , Rockford Files, Magnum PI, and Mannix, Cannon got this. Maybe they didn't have any confidence in the show and decided to save money everywhere they could.

This seems to be a thing with "QM" productions. They also spoilt The Streets of San Francisco theme by doing the same thing.
