Thanks for the free PDF tab, it's a big help. I am grateful for all your effort. The video's right but there appear to be 2 errors in the PDF. The Bb7 in bar 17 is off by 2 frets, and in bar 22 the Db 6/9 is off by one fret. Just trying to help.
I so wish you would do a deep dive on the guitar solo from this Andy, it's a Beast(!) of a solo. It's a lifetime goal of mine to learn the full solo, just haven't quite got the confidence/ability to take the whole thing on on my own.
Great lesson, Andy. As a confirmed Charlie Christian fan, I appreciate any videos that explore the music of this amazing genius. It's taken me a long time to understand the chord shapes that he uses. Currently I'm using the book "The Chord Shapes of Charlie Christian" by Joseph Weidlich which is really helpful and applicable to all styles of playing.
Great video, and it's a even visual delight! Your studio looks splendid and the studio / jumper coordination is absolutely on point here! Charlie Christians playing is always glorious but never more so than on Swing To Bop, it still floors me every time I hear it! Really great to have a lesson on the rhythm playing and chords so huge thanks for doing that. It brought me to your channel which is full of great stuff so I've subscribed and will be digging in! A lesson on Charlie's full solos on Swing To Bop would be amazing if the inclination ever takes you! Huge thanks for all the great lessons and content.
I just need a blue guitar and then the look is complete! (I am actually quite tempted by the Telecaster in Cobra blue). I feel exactly the same about that solo, it never sounds stale to my ears, always so fresh. Thanks for the feedback re the lesson, I'm sure at some point I will break that solo down - possibly over a few videos as it is so long! Thanks for the sub :)
My last video was a backing track to this amazing tune featuring the great Charlie Christian. You can check that out here:ruclips.net/video/CIQGPPGM7ys/видео.html Don't forget you can download the chart here: www.jazzguitarwithandy.com/standards
Great piece in the puzzle of my jazz education. Please help me with a chord analysis, I don't have the skills yet to transpose from the Topsy chart-thank you!
@@jazzguitarwithandy I've just understood the importance of chord analysis while studying the "Swing toBebop" lesson. I can recognize 2-5s in the key, and your recent Misty lesson shows more concepts that are vague but I recognize are important-Just starting out-all of your Charlie Christian teachings are of great value-Thank You!
Les Paul once said that there were only two guitar players on earth that he takes his hat off to. One was Django Reinhardt, and the other was Charlie Christian. This tune sounds very much like Django`s Gypsy style. If he and Charlie could have ever played together, that would have been something to hear. They probably could have traded lines for days..
@@jazzguitarwithandy There's a great interview with Les Paul where he talks about the time he played with Charlie. He said "Charlie just nailed me to the wall, and rightly so, I still had a lot to learn at that time" spoken like a true gentleman.
I read somewhere the key changes and faster speed at Minton's was done on purpose to discourage the participation of amauter musicians because it was recorded on a open jam night.
Nice Lesson Andy. Some good Chord changes there to work on for sure. I went and listened to Charlie's solo a couple others as well. Very nice melodies and lines. I will never run out of things to work on that is for sure! :) Best Wishes!
Superb, I have been waiting for this for years. Have you got any similar rhythm lesson for Solo Flight? Six Appeal ? Anything is welcome! Is that a VA 185 G in the background??? Keep on with this fantastic job, Bernard.
Hi Andy, greatlesson, as always!! I've tried to figure out the progession. B Section is 5th counterclockwise. But I don't understand the Chord-Progression of the A-Section. Bb=I Eb=IV F=V OK, but what about the chords in between.??? Greetings from Cologne
They are nice little turnarounds in the A section. The first bit is Bbm, then a diminished chord a tone above works as a great passing chord to the Db6, which can also be seen as a Bbm in first inversion. As for the descending - Bbm, Ab7, Gb7, F7 - I think it works just because of the strong pull of that descending sequence via the b7 (Ab) and then the 6 to the 5.
Actually Charlie didn't use scales, he improvised just following the shapes of the chords, like arpeggios and chord tones, plus adding chromatic runs to tie everthing together and nail the changes.

Thanks for pointing this out Brian. I so wish I had a proofreader :) I've pinned your comment so others can see it.
Merci beaucoup 🎸😎

That would be a long video, I'd love to do it one day. It's my favourite jazz recording.

I would loved to have heard them play together. Shame Charlie had died by the time Django made it to the US
Gypsy jazz is known for its use of m6 chords, of which this song has plenty.

Gotta love them m6!
also m7b5.

Thanks Bernard. I haven't looked at those tunes for lessons. Yes you are right it is a VA 185G that you see. Great little amp!

Can you transcribe the solo for this tune ("Swing to Bop")?
Cool
Could you please advise what scales can be used throughout the song - many thanks.
Sure. I'd go Bb dorian and Eb dorian for the A section. For the b section just use the Mixolydian scale to match the chord.
Jazz guitar with Andy many thanks Andy 👍

can someone post timestamps
Sounds like Gypsy Jazz
it's those minor 6 chords
