I'm building a guitar (with Warmoth Parts)

- Note: This isn't really a step by step manual about how to build a guitar, it's rather an overview what you basically have to do when you build a guitar from parts.
If common sense is used, I'm sure anyone can do this.
What you don't see in the video is how I put in the tremolo studs, the tremolo claw and how I polished the frets, but you're not missing much.
To polish the frets I just used a Dunlop 65 Micro Fine Fret Polishing Cloth, nothing more was needed for the frets.
The background music are some old demos of mine.
For the gear heads, here's a list of specs:
Warmoth body, swamp ash, chambered, flame maple top, natural masked binding
Warmoth neck, Warmoth Pro construction, boat neck (huge), maple, Pau Ferro fretboard
SS6100 frets (SS is for stainless steel)
Earvana compensated nut
Warmoth pickguard in white pearl
Bridge PU: Dimarzio Virtual Solo DP420
Middle & Neck PUs: Dimarzio Area 67 DP419
Bridge: Gotoh EV510T-FE (this is the improved version of the trem that Suhr guitars are using)
Tuners: Gotoh SG381-07 Locking Tuners
Saddles: Graph Tech String Saver Saddles
What else was used: All kinds of electronics, pickup switch, knobs, jack, jack plate, roller string tree, strap locks, screws, Joe Satriani Strap...
The amp used to test the guitar at the end is an Orange Tiny Terror Combo.
The settings where tone at 13 o'clock and gain at 12 o'clock, second part is with gain at 15 o'clock
No pedals were used.
Enjoy!

Cool video man...I built a custom guitar myself out of parts from Warmoth as well and I was scared as hell drilling everything like you demonstrated here, but it all worked and it's the sweetest guitar in my collection....your wiring seemed pretty extensive...I loved that portion of my build since I'm an electronics tech anyway. Thanks for sharing.
the push pull tone pot activates bridge and neck pickups (like a telecaster in the middle position), the black button is a killswitch (for stuttering effects etc.) and that other switch is to activate the bridge regardless of the volume/tone 5-way switch settings
@doctorgone string trees are to get a sharper string angle at the nut (since the strat headstock isn't angled).
There are certain locking tuners available that get shorter towards the high E, with those you wouldn't "need" string trees.
I'm looking at building a thinline tele with P-90s from Warmoth parts, and your vid just convinced me to go for it. I bet it's rewarding to play a guitar you had so much involvement in putting together! Nice work dude.
My favorite part is that it's a struggle to get the neck in and out of the joint w/ the body. One of THE most important and most overlooked aspects to good guitar tone is a tight neck joint. Kudos:)
Gotta luv the colours, I'm rebuilding my guitar and this helped me alot. Nice playing! : )
Jesus christ, that's a sexy guitar dude. Yeah, i checked out warmoth a few month's ago, everything is pretty expensive, but as i can see everything has amazing quality. You're also a great player, I'm jealous, that guitar is just beautiful
these are locking tuners, there's just no locking nut, it stays fairly well in tune
I polished the frets, set up the Truss Rod & set the intonation + string height at the saddles
killer gtr,love that sunburst excellent job building it
@suaragitar the neck comes with a special kind of sticker, with a black decal on it (I bought a sticker with a gold decal extra)
you can decide if you want to put the decal on or not
That's a wicked guitar, bro. Superb playing, too.
:)
@GuitarzMyThing it's a Dimarzio Virtual Solo DP420
but now they have those Paul Gilbert "Injector" pickups, which should also be worth checking out
Gotoh machine heads are quality parts and they will stay in tune well.
Very nice videos! I am considering to build one myself. Did the neck come with the Warmoth decal?
Thanks for sharing
Not sure if you already answer this question (I'm just too lazy to read all the comments and I didn't find this on your description) the finish on the body is FireBurst? Congratulations, you build an amazing guitar.
@Gaza880 Warmoth call it a "fire burst", but yes, it's a flame maple top
@caulinrocker yes, if you go through getting a floating bridge in tune, you deserve to use it ;-)
@tvtalent they hold well, you have to be a bit more careful than with a double locking system though
@zelissen they send a black warmoth logo with the neck
but got a gold warmoth logo
yes, they are basically stickers, but very strong stickers
incredible video! Can you tell me what kind of tremolo system you put on and will it fit a regular american strat?
awesome guitar dude! it's my dream to be able to build my own guitar. great playing too.
1 question i wanted to do an HSS setup with a Warmoth Jag-Stang, would i have to alter the design of the body in any way for that to work? i know I'll have to make a space in the pickguard for the single coil but idk bout the body.
Once again, Thank you very much ! one last question if i'm not too tiring...
If i order a knob, while building a custom body, i'm only ordering the knob, right? if so, where do i get the actual knob hardware ?:)
yes, always leave the window open when soldering
@hawkdog110 absolutely
also, nothing is cooler than a customized/unique guitar
@manfredmar everything is extra, Warmoth can drill the correct holes fitting to your tuners though
@guitarDouchebaggery Dude, thank you so much for the reply. It's funny, I was looking into the injector. I think I'll get it now. Also, I'd like to keep that nice strat sound when I combine the neck and middle pu's, like for the song little wing or lenny. Do you think the dimarzio area 67 would work for that? Thanks man.
it's all kinds of parts from all kinds of online shops.
It's not so hard to put together, I had no building description.
You might just need a wiring diagram. Those usually come with the pickups
@FinnishZombieSlayer Ibanez RG550XX-DY (desert yellow, it's the 20th anniversary RG550 reissue from 2007)
@sonicart77 cool, yes Salzburg is really nice and also in Austria, so the accents won't differ that much
to my surprise they didn't need to be leveled or anything. I just polished them with those Jim Dunlop fret polishing cloths
@Gaza880 thanks, it's a Gotoh EV510T
cool, even your username suggests that kind of guitar. I hope it'll turn out great, the specs sound promising
Beautiful guitar!!
@harimarockfan95 I think you mean my cover of "For a fistful of dollars", it's originally by Ennio Morricone
@bonzzo15 lol, well it's not cheapo stuff, of course it's more expensive than buying a stock one
getting to select every part to your liking costs extra
but it's still cheaper than getting a fender custom shop guitar
@DavidFUBB well, I never played a Fender Custom Shop guitar. However, AFAIK back in the day, the Fender Custom Shop used Warmoth parts.
However, an experienced luthier could select pieces of wood which would work together well. When ordering parts that might not be the case.. or at least it wont be the absolute optimum ;)
cool video, you should see my guitar, i actually took the single coils apart and totally rebuilt them as stacked humbuckers that fit the original covers, you couldnt even tell they are not singlecoils by looking at the guitar, but they are, LOUD and have perfect tone with no 50hz hum!
hey man, I decided to go with a wilkinson vs100, and I'm gunna put graphite saddles on it so I can be cool like you.
I never played a fender custom shop guitar, so I can't tell. The warmoth is easier on the budget, that's for sure
Pardon my ignorance but can you also order Warmoth necks with the Fender motif on the headstock?
@evanisgay11 I composed everything except that acoustic guitar + leads on electric guitar song that is played during the drilling part of the video, that one is by Ennio Morricone, but the rest is written by me
maybe your 5 way switch doesn't work properly anymore. Or just check if any wiring got loose.
no, I'm sorry, there are no tabs, those licks in between the chords where improvised. But it's those chords played with a gypsy jazz rhythm: Bm7, E7, AM7
@Sh0w3rH3ad around 1400€
but prices have probably increased since :-(
but you can cut some of the price by using a more common bridge etc.
and the Tuners: Gotoh SG381-07 Locking Tuners and Saddles Graph Tech String Saver Saddles? is thatv a Basswood body or Ash?
thanks! Regarding the neck: It might sound cheesy, but the neck on my Warmoth is actually my favorite. So I would buy another one. It's the "fat" profile, not sure if that's everyones taste though ;-)
why do you drill into the headstock? aren't there holes already? or do u need bigger holes?
Good video, good English and great guitar. Thanks.
I like the soundtrack lol!
Hooray!
@JacobsLadderRoxx I think there is a much more in depth tutorial by smbstressfest
if not everything is explained there, you could also ask for help at the Warmoth forum
Really wanna do this, roughly how much did everything cost?
they dont have to come with the warmoth logo on them right?
it's a Gotoh EV510T-FE
but a Gotoh 510T is almost the same and easier to find
@guitarDouchebaggery on my guitar...
no gain just noise.... specially when im lowering the volume/tone...
the guitar came like that... and it is a washburn WI-64.
what can i do to fix that problem?
i can make a video and show you the inside of the guitar so you can spot whats wrong with it.
@thefrenchman555 no, but you can ask e.g. a guitar-tech to build it for you
How are the SS6100 frets? I'm thinking about putting them in a neck.
They're awesome as long as you like jumbo frets. Very smooth and last forever.
amazing man!
honestly, is the sustain ok on your guitar, whats your taught on that
@guitarDouchebaggery the second one
is this all your music playing?
What does your custom switching do?
Thanks! I recently purchased a limited custom Telecaster FMT HH. If your not familiar, and interested, Google or RUclips it. I still want a hardcore Telecaster.
Warmoth has a couple bodies I really like and can make the neck I want.
Nice Strat!
well.. I think warmoth is better than Fender customshop. Bare in mind that Warmoth delivered the parts for the Fender customshop for the first couple of months if not years, of the c.s. existance.
The playability and tones are in the league of CS (if you choose ofcourse fender-esque woods). but I can't imagine playing something else anytime soon.
INSTANT SUBSCRIBER.
how long did it take you to make?
well, the clean sound was too bright because of the amp settings I had when I made the video
otherwise the cleans are great :)
What did you do about setup work?
I still Can't find the Gotoh EV510T-TE bridge here on America or the Internet address that you gave to me, could you be kind to lead me to other supplier that would carry the unit on their catalog and ship to america, or if you know of any place here on america that have the Gotoh EV510T-TE bridge on stock, I guess is a brand new Unit !!?
how much did all this cost
@Satyros2os thanks man
cool soundtrack at 3:54
@qondawacho thanks for watching
@XxFuNkYPaNdAxX thanks
I'm from Austria, but we speak German there, so you where close
@someguyoketcetc lol, thanks
Yesss!!! great!!!! great! Man!!!
wow your fast you must have had a red bull
that' true
you can always have 2 guitars though
@snipperacoustics alright, I'll send you a PM
I think they can't. But maybe a local guitar tech can do that for you?
@nolobede yes, I think "building" is sort of an umbrella term that includes everything: Carving wood, drilling holes, wiring electronics...
anyways, I guess most people who watch my video searched for Warmoth and got to see what was expected.. I hope ;-)
no worries, it sounds like you'll put together an awesome guitar :)
@heyfuckyou1997 one is a killswitch (it mutes the guitar, so you can make a stuttering effect when pressing it fast), the other one activates the bridge pickup at full tone and volume (so on a overdriven one channel amp you can have a clean sound, e.g. neck pickup + low volume and then quickly switch between full on bridge and the clean setting)
there is also a push pull tone knob that activates bridge and neck like on a tele (middle position)
@t0psecretshit thanks
yes, the body comes without any pre-drilled holes for the strap locks and pickguard. But it does come with the neck pocket holes already drilled and the pickup cavities etc.
The necks come with the holes for the neck screws and the selected tuners.
The tremolo is a Gotoh EV510T-FE (there's also a link where you could get those, or at least used to get in the description)
@OverratedReality various stuff:
the black button is a killswitch
the switch beside the black button bypasses volume, tone and pickup selector and switches to full on bridge pickup (this is useful to change between any volume/pickup setting and full on bridge PU quickly, e.g. clean and distorted on a single channel amp)
push pull tone knob selects bride and neck pickup (like the middle position of a telecaster)
@JCreatr if it's the same guitar then there should be no difference in sustain in regards if a company screws body and neck together or if a hobbyist does it
it depends more on the pieces of wood, bridge type, neck construction type etc.
but if it's a really expensive guitar, like from a custom shop, it's possible that the luthier finds pieces of wood that resonate really well together and therefore it should have more sustain
Great shirt, amazing English.
@HavocBillz one is a killswitch (it mutes the guitar, so you can make a stuttering effect when pressing it fast), the other one activates the bridge pickup at full tone and volume (so on a overdriven one channel amp you can have a clean sound, e.g. neck pickup + low volume and then quickly switch between full on bridge and the clean setting)
@ArgentinianTraceur I think I did it like this: I put all the tuners into the holes, used a ruler on one the back side of the tuners (this only works when the tuners are flat on one side) and aligned them nicely, then I took a pencil and made a dot in each screw lug. Then I drilled the holes where the dots where.
@mikecibula like it says in the description, it's a Gotoh EV510T
I don't know if it would fit an american strat
the studs are 56mm apart which is around the same as the 2 point knive edge fender trem
the studs have a different diameter though, but you can keep the old studs
however, I'm not sure if the routing for the sustainblock is big enough
the black button is a killswitch
the switch beside the black button bypasses volume, tone and pickup selector and switches to full on bridge pickup
this is useful to change between any volume/pickup setting and full on bridge PU quickly
push pull tone knob selects bride and neck pickup (like the middle position of a telecaster)
thanks dude
ok, I think I had to order the screws for the pickguard extra
what kind of studs do you mean? Or do you mean a string retainer bar?
the diagram was something I designed myself (for the extra switches), otherwise you can just use a standard strat diagram :)
@96lolstar I bought mine from the "product showcase" part of the shop, so neck and body where already made when I ordered, so I don't know how long it usually takes
Warmoth sells individual parts and not sets, so you can get pickups or order them from anywhere else
@Sk8erbakerskater you can search for "Mattias IA Eklundh harmonics" and learn it from the master
or the short version is: You slap the strings quickly with your left hands middle finger (you have to hit right where a natural harmonic is, e.g. 5. or 7. fret etc.)
@AHMADF93 I know a lot about electronics in general. If you want to create your own guitar wiring all you need is some basic understanding about electric circuits and what capacitors or potentiometers do etc.
or you could just use a standard wiring which you can find plenty of on the web
@CouchSpud40 strange, I chose the Wilkinson routing and it aligned perfectly. Is there maybe anything set up in a weird way? Do the saddles have room to move closer to the right? Then you might put some shims in there to make the saddles stay in place to the right. Just some ideas.
@MitchRulzWorld I like it, however, if I'd have to chose some pickups now, I'd go for some Dimarzio Injectors (Paul Gilbert's signature pickups, he also plays hard rock a little metal and has played UFO covers, so they'd be a perfect fit)
@DUDI0215 yes you can
from what I've heard it's recommended to have one pot that has all the grounds wired to it, but I'm not sure if that really makes any actual difference
but try to attach all grounds to the same pot (or almost all of them)
