People didn't know that a lot of Pimps across the country were highly upset at the Whispers for this song. It all worked out in the end though.

Their first supporters were pimps and players in the Bay Area back in the late ‘60’s, so they considered this song a slap in the face

      @jayhbiz "You spit pure facts!"
It had reached the point to where the bigger the song got, the more threats The Whispers got as well...
To the point to where they were threatened to stop performing the song on their tours by the same pimps who'd profited off the same topic of the song to afford them lavish clothing to don in the absolute seats at The Whispers' shows.
      Talk about IRONY.

    • @seqenenretaoii5722

@@jayhbiz Right. Much as I love The Whispers, the song was disingenuous. It completely ignores the reality that in America, women overwhelming choose to be in that life. No one is holding them against their will. Pimps who are true to the game never hold a woman hostage. They are free to quit hoeing anytime they choose. For a number of reasons, they don't stop. But it's a choice.
Now, that's not to say that there aren't some dudes out here who are on some guerilla sh*t, kidnapping chicks and making them do sex work. But that's sex trafficking, it's not pimping. And to often, people conflate the two. Which is dishonest.
So to use the word 'slave' is disingenuous.

I know a girl who at 19 got on crack. Her name was actually Olivia. She was tall and beautiful. She was begging for at a gas station. She was willing to do tricks. I asked her why was she really out here and what she really needed was a bathe. I had a church lady friend of mine who owned a Moter-Lodge. She stayed 3 days getting sober. We found out that Olivia, now 25 years old Spoke 5 languages!!! One Japanese flawlessly for a blackgirl. Her story was hauntingly accurate to The Whispers Olivia. That we had to play it for her. The tears just flowed for all of us. She said, "Thats Me !!" The Church got her into rehab. Like must she still struggles with addiction everyday. But her relapses are few and far.

I’d beg to differ.. It’s more in the open due to social media..
In our day it was a scarlet letter hung around a girl’s neck.
Today it’s worn like a badge of “honor”… It’s portrayed as a lifestyle of luxury living. Getting flown to Dubai and name brand bags…
“Lost and turns out” is now lumped in with being a boss “B” who’s independent and don’t need anybody.. getting that money and living best lives..
“Be careful what you do.. Before the lie becomes the “truth”
    Michael Jackson
    -1983

This is definitely a powerful song, with a strong message. I've loved this song since it first came out in the 80's. Another song you may want to check out is Holly by Smokey Robinson. It was on his first solo album after leaving the Miracles (early 70's). It also tells the story of a young woman who made choices that had painful consequences.

Pimping was the "it" thing during the 60s and 70s. As a young single girl (pretty and built), this song kept me on point. A girl had to be smart to pimps, and not get excited over minks, cars and the so-called glamorous life. I drive through those streets now, and realize how silly that show really was.

this song came out toward the end of that Blaxploitation era, they made a lot of negative stereotypes of black people as "Pimp/Dope Dealer/Gangster" movies, those were the type of movie Hollywood sent to the movie theaters out after the gains civil rights era, almost the same type of arguments was made against those type movies as was made against rap lyrics in the 90's.

There is nothing new under the sun my beloved. Sin and evil have always been a part of our society. The difference that innocence was once protected. We insured that children could be children and grown folk did what they did. Women where respected and protected. When you became an "Olivia" it was because you didn't listen to the wisdom of your elders. I would imagine that Olivia's grandmother schooled her on the signs to watch for in a man that would alert her that he was nothing more than a wolf is sheep clothing. But like many the warnings may not have been adhered to.
When a good man, Father, is absent from the home, and a girl often isn't validated, her self-worth isn't affirmed, and she looks for that affirmation in the first smooth talking low life that comes along. I love that you find music of my generation appealing. it was called soul music for nothing. The majority of these artist cut their teeth in church choir.
