We were so lucky to be exposed to such fine music at such a young age.
We really were. Blessed.
This album is one of the reasons I can’t get out of the 60/70’s when it comes to music. It was the best.
It’s pure joy to see these reactors find this music. And yes I’m so blessed to have witnessed much of it live. Still trying to see live music as much as possible. Got to work on the set list for my funeral! 😂
Original by Billy Holiday ( 1941) Reaction a must!
Spinning Wheels 🎡
Real people playing real instruments, singing without computers-true musicians playing real music.
Great song! Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. They had a lot of great songs such as "Spinning Wheel", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die", "Hi-De-Ho" "Lucretia MacEvil", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me" etc.
Yes, you really need to do more.. and I really want to suggest "Spinning Wheel", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die".. they are amazing songs!
Original by Billy Holiday ( 1941) Reaction a must!
The used a fucking Tuba shaka kann !!!!!
David Clayton Thomas was a heck of a singer.
This is one talented band!
"God Bless The Child" is a cover song from Billie Holiday the great legendary Jazz singer/songwriter.
David Clayton Thomas era, you'll know as soon as you hear his voice. This is a great band. "And When I Die" is a great Laura Nyro song that they covered.
My grandmother ordered that album from her Columbia Record Club. I still have it. This album was one I played over and over. ❤️🔥💞🛡⚔️👑🕊🙏✨💖💫
Original by Billy Holiday ( 1941) Reaction a must!
💙
Yes, I bought that album too! Imagine, 1 penny for 11 albums, it was too good to be true! I still have the albums!
Yeah grandma!
Original by Billy Holiday ( 1941)
Reaction a must!
I will soon be 77 and first heard this album while a senior at Illinois State university in 1968, . I reacted the same way as you when I first heard this song. in 68. superb arrangement, so well tied together and so will done...the brass section was such a blessing to my ears being a horn player. I learned to read music. play coronet, trumpet and baritone at age 11. This song present's a superb arrangement and musical artistry skills while covering the musical forms of jazz, pop, rock and rhythm and blues, Vocals by David Clayton Thomas are superb and add a fine fabric of texture that holds it all together. This never grows old...as ordered sound enters the soul and elevates the consciousness of man. "God Bless the child that's got his own" ....db
David Clayton Thomas was one of the finest voices of that era and B,S & T songs always hit you with that jazz punch while flying with the R&B influence. You have to hear Spinning Wheel or And When I Die, or You’ve Made Me So Very Happy. Any one of them will blow you away
Agree 100%.
This is my FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME. Again, one I have owned in all formats starting with vinyl, then 8-track, cassette, CD, and MP3.
Every song is a winner and burned into my brain.
“I can say there ain’t no heaven but I will prey there ain’t no hell”
My long-time favorite album since I first heard it as a 10-11-year old kid. As Mike McCabe said a few weeks back, we were lucky to be exposed to this great music at a young age.
You owe it to yourself to check out more by BS&T, in particular "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die", and "Spinning Wheel"!
I was a senior in High School when this came out… I have loved it ever since. My parents were huge Billy Holiday fans in the 1940’s, and told me that They brought me to a club and Billy bounced me on her knee. My claim to fame!
That harmonica in the final is just the icing on the
Thanks Bob for the request. Wonderful voice. Thanks Sal for taking us back to 1968 for this one.
I had forgotten just how amazing this song is. It's a masterpiece arrangement. Just what I needed.
David Clayton Thomas is one of the best voices!
These guys had it going on, big time for several years. David Clayton Thomas, lead singer, was one-of-a-kind. So soulful... I wore out the LP that year!
He is the best singer of the group.
“You Made Me So Very Happy”, please.
Wow! Been a minute or two since I've heard Blood, Swear and Tears, much less this epic song!!! Thank you for reacting to this!!! Damn, I miss my teenage music so much!!
Ditto!
Original by Billy Holiday ( 1941) Reaction a must!
Another song is "Lucretia McEvil" and "More and More" are really masterpieces!!! Check these songs out too. They are Bangers!!!
I was in junior high when this band appeared. This is my all time favorite band, and one of the main reasons i became a pro musician. Very few groups reached this level of musical diversity while remaining hugely popular.
In concert when they started the Salsa music ALL the WOMEN & more were Up Dancing in the aisle's. It was a sight to Behold! Thanks for Sharing❤. I Adored this band. They had it all. P.S. I got up & Shook My Booty too. Another Great from them is Hi-de-Ho.
This was BST 2nd album. First album was Child is Father to the Man. Al Kooper was writer and lead vocals on that one. He left the band after their debut album and had a successful solo career.
This is an Epic tune - another great album/band mom had in her collection. Special listening!
Perfectly crafted song, beginning to end. Excellent reaction / review!
I love his voice. My older brothers listened to Blood, Sweat & Tears so I pretty much grew up on their music. 'And When I Die' and 'You Make Me So Very Happy' are great songs.
Nobody can belt it out like DCT! I saw them live, in Hawaii, in the 70s, and they rocked! I especially liked Lew Soloff's trumpet solos. He was the best trumpet player in rock, still to this day, even though he passed away several years ago. RIP Lew! I was playing trumpet in my high school jazz band back then. They had the best horn section of any jazz rock band, such a tight group, and that's saying a lot when you think of Tower of Power, Chicago, EW&F (jazz soul), and many others. They only had a handful of albums, but many cool songs. Try a mellow one by them, with Steve Katz on vocals, (Sometimes in Winter). And 'Go Down Gamblin'.
Its one of the most genius arrangements you'll ever hear...
I grew up with this band. So glad you got to hear them. Next you need to listen to "And when I die". I think it is their best song.
Great trumpet solo by the late, great Lew Soloff.
This is the second album from B.S,&T. The premiere album had Al Kooper singing lead and playing keyboards, for which he was already famous, ( check his bio.),on most of the cuts. The band was formed by Kooper, and Steve Katz, both former members of the groundbreaking blues rock group, The Blues Project, (another group you should check out. Especially their album "Live at the Cafe Au Go Go.
David Clayton-Thomas Era was when David was the lead singer he was the signature voice...when they were popular. His voice made Blood Sweat and Tears. Their albums were No.1 on the Billboard album chart for a lot of weeks. So, when he left the group got other lead singers...were that popular.
It's fun watching people listen to songs that I've been listening to since 1968 and watching their reactions!
Thank you SalvoG for taking my request for this band which allong witLed Zeppelin. Yes. Three Dog Night are one of my all-time favorite bands. They were the first to put out this Big Band Jazz Progressive Rock n' Roll soul fusion and of course, Chicago and Tower of Power followed. This band combined Crooner Jazz music with Rock. Blues.and Folk and a little Classical music in their sound. It was unique and I at the age of 13 fell in love with them. I knew you would like their music so I took a chance on sending the request in, knowing that this band gets blocked a lot on You Tube. I want to sit back and see your reaction. Maybe if you like the band...I will request other songs for you to react to. Enjoy.
My favorite song of BS&W! Lucretia was my second best 👌. David Clayton Thomas was/IS the "man". The band's instrumentals are incredible!❤❤
Loved BS&T! Saw them in concert several times. Never disappoints! Some of their best are: "When I Die", "Spinning Wheel", and "You Make So Very Happy" Enjoy!💕
Amazing thank you for this ! I enjoy you getting a backstory before each video, I learn things I never knew . I played this album so often when my kids were young that my 43yr old son said this song was part of his moral being . On the same album there is a song called "And when I die " (you would love that song ) he asked me at 4yrs old who was going to replace him when he s gone. We had a great and heartfelt conversation about it .
This is a perfect song! Arrangement-stellar! Musicianship-Stellar as well! Execution ,relatable, leaves the listener wanting more, ALL stellar! The lead trumpet, Lew Soloff died recently, what a loss!
Fantastic! Glad to see someone reacting to this incredible band, thank you!
Spectacular version of this song with Chuck Negron formerly of Three Dog Night taking the lead vocals
One of my favorite songs by them....love the brass and woodwind line up--such amazing musicians! Lew Soloff and Chuck Winfield on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jerry Hyman on trombone, Dave Bargeron on tuba, Dick Halligan on flute (I think he also played trombone and other instruments on certain tracks), and Fred Lispius on Sax...not to mention their extra tight keyboard, guitar, bass and drums... And yes, the personnel changed quite a bit, so it might not be the line up on this particular track, but those are the ones I do remember from the LPs I had when I was a kid...I'd listen to them over and over....
It’s all about his voice. No one has a voice like his
One of my favorite songs. It was written and first recorded by Billie Holiday.
Great song! Great band! RIP trumpet player Lew Soloff!
LOVE BS&T!!! Love the brass and David Clayton-Thomas is a great vocalist.
I beleive Clayton-Thomas was the best vocalist they ever had. You should explore some of the founder's (Al Kooper) other work in particular his colaborations with Mike Bloomfield. Start with "Super Session' which has Stephen Stills on the guitar.
An unforgettable tune along with many more.
Thanks Bob for a GREAT request. My all time favorite song on my all time favorite album.
"Go Down Gambling" is a Blood Sweat & Tears track that I play often on vinyl 45.
This album you are listening to is a great album and should be played from start to finish; that is why the "Variations on a Theme " were added. as a transition. One song off this album that I enjoy is "Sometimes in Winter" .
Blood Sweat & Tears is one of my all-time favorite Rock bands. This song, "God Blessed The Child, " is the song I requested you reacting to. Thank you for reacting to it. It's one of their Masterpiece songs. This group along with Chicago is one of the pioneers of Jazz/Rock/Soul music. Then came Steely Dan. Earth Wind and Fire. Kool & The Gang.....and the host of others. Great reactions 😊😊😊😊
"You've Made Me So Very Happy" makes me happy!
Before listening to your reaction i just wanna say youre gonna be blown away..
Blood Sweat & Tears is one of my all-time Bands in music history. Love them!!! React to "Spinning Wheel" which is taking a regular Amusement Park Spinning Wheel with it's bouncing horses which people rode at the time with that Circus music in the background playing and putting it on a record.....it's a trip of laughter and fun!!! I Love it!!! Very very talented musicians!!! formed in 1967 in New York. This band influenced ..bands like Chicago....Tower of Power.....Earthh Wind & Fire....one of the underrated bands in music history yet one of the most popular band among the people of the 60's and early 70's. Good reactions from you!!! React to the entire album!!! It's a Masterpiece!!! Fire!!!!
I'm an old drummer and playing along with this CD makes me smile. I only play with the best. Thanks for the reaction. Stay safe.
This was a great time for diversity in music. Around this time, we had artists like Santana, Carole King, Chicago, Hendrix, The Doors, all kinds of genres; sometimes all in one song, like this one. Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago were the first bands to incorporate horn sections with rock. The first BS&T album, Child Is Father To The Man, had Al Kooper as lead vocal and was more jazz/blues based. It's an absolutely incredible album as well. The David Clayton Thomas vocals came on the second album, which gave the band radio airplay and the Grammy. Both albums are amazing, just a bit different in their own unique way. From the first album check out I Can't Quit Her and I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. From the second album try And When I Die and Spinning Wheel. BS&T are classic!
Good explanation and description of the distinction between the 2 styles!
Thanks!@@joelliebler5690
Great song and an awesome band, love this song
My mom's favorite singer! Therefore, heard them from the beginning of my memory...
First album, with I’ll Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know, before DC Thomas, was fantastic, too. Don’t overlook it!
Love (LOVE!) this band. Clayton-Thomas has a pretty cool back story. He's a Canadian Legend in the industry. "Spinning Wheel" is a must. I would also suggest a Canadian party band with a big horn section: Lighthouse - "Sunny Days"
It would be good to hear Billies' original recording.
The Thomas era was when the hits happened, as well as the Grammys, mainly 1969 through the early 1970s.
You can see why this album won the Grammy for Best Album of the year (beating out Abby Road)
I still have this vinyl after all these decades. Saw David on the Tom Jones show some 50 years ago, he was a helluva singer.
David Thomas IS the BST no doubt about it. His vocals are unmatched.
Great reaction. Great song from great band. Unique sound. . I definitely recommend more songs from them.
And the tears flow…Thanks so much❣️🙏❤️🔥
My older sister had this album when I was little. I remember playing it over and over. This was a favorite. She recently passed away and I'm glad for this reminder this evening!
Many years ago, I was in Lee Park in Dallas and heard somebody playing a trumpet. Then a few more instruments joined in. I thought man they sound good! It turned out to be BS&T jamming on a Sunday afternoon after they had played a concert the night before.
They are exceptional!
"Go Down Gamblin"" is a BS&T classic simply because it has a TUBA solo.
An amazing album start to finish. Top notch arrangements and musicianship. Believe it or not I haved loved this album since I was 10 years old, some 53 years ago! This helped shaped my appreciation for real music opening my eyes to all styles. Thanks for your enthusiastic approach, you always bring smiles with your reactions.
I really loved these guys back then.
❤ YAY! BST! Thanks to who recommended this!
They played at Woodstock in 69, going on stage about 1:30 am on Monday morning.
Oh there gonna open it up alright! You just opened up the box! Nice one.
David Clayton-Thomas era - the why: THAT VOICE!
That was extremely nice!
Ah, a tune back from when there were less lines between genres ( or at least they were blurred). Spinning Wheel or When I Die should be next from this amazing band.
This is a PRIME example of why reactors need to LISTEN ENTIRELY to the complete song and after the song is FINISHED, react and comment - then you won't need to interrupt the song before is halfway point to comment "open it up a little bit for me, will ya?"
We love that you research the songs. No apologies
They are more jazz than rock. They have great chops with the best group from 1968-1975. Their fourth album BST 4 is my personnel favorite.
I bought this album when it came out, it must have been right around 1970. Just fantastic music, and this was my favorite song on it! Thanks so much, Salvo!
The first time I heard Blood Sweat & Tears I was in second grade and my hot teacher Mrs. Sam was getting down & dancing to it. Spinning Wheel I think it was. You gotta do the other songs you mentioned. All good.
Now you just *MUST* react to the whole album! One regret...never got to see them live.
Thank you so much for this. I still have and listen to their albums.✌️
My favorite song by them is "and when I die". Lots of harmonica in it.
I bought this album when it first came out just for this song. I have given all of my vinyl collection to my son.
If you like Chicago, you will probably like BS&T. Their tunes inspired many an American marching band! For good reason they were very popular. (I own this album)
Saw BST in concert - Toronto 1969 & they were amazing! I would suggest that you delve into BST before David C-T....with Al Kooper. A good one is "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know".
God bless is great but they are great
This is my favorite song from them by far. They are very similar to early Chicago due to horns.
I believe the short run time you saw, under three minutes, was for the radio play version of the song. What you heard was the album track. The radio version likely excluded the extended instrumental section before the last chorus. Back in the 1960s, AM radio stations that played rock and roll would rarely play anything longer than three minutes.
Love BST!!! Loved your reaction! Well done young man! Howdy from Texas 🤠🤠
Pretty much wore that album out on my little Swingline stereo in the college dorm. So good.
Dang, that tastes good!
