The memories of our childhood I what makes us keep this chicken. There is a lot of pus for the improved breeds but we shouldnt let the indigenous breed go extinct. It's our connection of our past
This video was a joy to watch, many thanks for making it! I have some question, what do you do with all the excess eggs? Do you sell them on a daily basis (those you don't consume), also, how do you know which eggs are fertile and good for broeding and hatching new chicks? Do you assume all the eggs are fertile because you have a lot of hens around? Also, how long do the eggs last until the go bad? Apologies for the many questions, thanks in advance.
Thanks for your comment. We consume a lot of eggs and some we sell.
To make sure that a big percentage of eggs are fertilized we ensure that the ratio of jogoos to hens is right. This ensures that most if not all the eggs are fertilized. We give a hen around 12 eggs to lay on and we just give the big size eggs to the chicken to lay on not the small sized ones. This may not be scientific but it's working for us.

Please how long do your eggs take to go bad before giving them to the hens to sit on
Hi. Eggs if properly stored can stay for around 3 weeks to a month but for us we give our chicken eggs to lay on that are not more than two weeks. Eggs are still fresh within this period.

Currently mixing yellow maize and small prawns(ochong'a) then the birds forage outside.

Hi. Yes. We do vaccinate our chicks on week 6. And we also do the regular vaccination against Newcastle on schedule. Sorry about your chicks getting sick.
Can they not roam about on free natural soil. .
Hi. Yes, they can. They love eating grass and other vegetation too. Also, some insects like grasshoppers are found in vegetation so it's good they have soil for worms and vegetation for insects.

Hi. We regularly change the cockerels. If you check previous videos you will notice that the cockerels are different. The ones we have now have mated once and will do so once more then we will get others so they don't mate with their chicks

i personally bought 100 chicks 1 week old 50 were cock and 50 were hens and in my plans is that after they start laying eggs they can buy themselves food but after 6 months no signs of laying eggs two months later no signs i had to sell them since its was much costly since i do buy food daily but i had to sell them at a draw prize but still have passion to rear this chicks again.

Can restart with 20 hens and 5 🐓 or ten feed them well and watch.

Hi. What breed of chicken do you have? Are they indigenous or improved breeds? Are they layers or broilers? Are you keeping them for commercial purposes own consumption? The amount of feeds will depend on all the above parameters.

Hi. Sorry about them getting sick. You need to visit your local vet and tell them the symptoms the birds are having. They should be able to advise on what to do since it seems the birds are already sick.
In previous videos we have advised new farmers keeping chicken for consumption to start with very few hens and a cockerel. For example two or three hens and one cockerel. This is because you it's easier to manage and you get to learn as the birds multiply. The chicks are also born on your farm so you know what vaccines to give and also use local solutions like aloe vera, pepper, ginger etc.
If you are going to buy chicks then you must buy from a trusted breeder who will do all the vaccinations.

How do you handle the chicken during the raining season
This chicken are used to go out so even the rainy season they go out but just for fewer hours than normal sunny days. They also do not go far during the rainy season, they will stay near their coop and will shelter if tbe rain is strong. The indigenous breed is stronger more resistant to diseases. We also regularly give pepper, aloe vera and ginger to boost their immunity hence we don't worry whether it's rainy or sunny.

No. We don't
How do you prepare ochonga for the chicks since it might have some sharp edges
Hi. The person we buy onchong'a from usually goes through it and takes out any sharp things. We also grind it together with the maize and there is a sieve there too. We haven't had any issue with ochong'a so far.
What is ochonga in English
Prawns I guess but this are smaller.
