As a Yankee fan this is EASILY my favorite home run hit by an opposing player. Such a shame this was the only series Bonds played against us in the Bronx. If only interleague play was introduced sooner…

One of my martial arts buddies was there too, sitting down the first base line. He couldn't see it go into the upper deck but the minute it was hit, the only question was how far it was going to travel.

Bonds was a hall of famer by the age of 29 with 3 mvps(should have been 4 in a row) and years before he ever started doing steroids. He was the best player in a league full of steroid users when he was natural. When he finally decided to level the playing field nobody in the history of the sport could match his production. I attended that Saturday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium.. I've never seen a ball hit that hard and disappear into the stands that fast in my life. Only a regular attendee to the Old Stadium could appreciate how far he hit that ball. We'd hardly ever seen a ball hit over the section entrances of the third tier. Most of the fans gave him a standing "O". No one threw that ball back. Greatest player I ever saw.
A year after this happened, I went to Yankee Stadium and sat in the same area that this HR landed in. I wore my Giants hat, despite the fact that the Giants weren't playing there that day, and a die hard Yankee fan who has sat there for years turned to me and said, "You guys are lucky to have Bonds! Appreciate it, because we Yankee fans think we know everything about baseball sometimes, and when he hit that homer up here last year, we realized, the hype was real!" You can hear that sentiment in the crowd when he hits the ball. The crowd boos him when he walks to the plate, but then they are in awe once he hits it! Steroids or not, Bonds was a beast!
Barry Bonds was lethal, absolute baseball royalty. No player influenced a game by his mere presence on the field like Barry. As a lifelong Giants fan I am proud to have witnessed it. PED’s or not, this man MUST make the Hall of Fame or it will cease to be relevant. Nuff said!!
Dude I'm on board with this. I'm almost 40 and I've never seen anyone come anywhere close to being as feared as he was. Every time he came to the plate it was a spectacle. He's also going to be the only 500/500 player in history. No one is going to touch that.
So was I. Tier reserve section 2 behind home plate. From that perspective , I never before or after saw a line drive smashed so hard and fast into the UPPER portion of the third tier.
I have looked and can't find the video, but the only time I saw one leave as fast or faster was when Canseco hit one while with the Sox. It was a left field foul pole camera, and he hit a line drive(although I think it ended up being foul)that left the yard so quickly I was amazed. Of course if I could find it I might see I was just young and it looked far better than it really was.
When Yankee Stadium cheers for you it’s definitely something special. Btw, I lived in Parsippany NJ still when he hit this. I went to my car and it was smashed by a baseball!

Barry was like a great white shark. Things are quiet for awhile, you think it's safe in the water, then BOOM. To do this at the old Stadium, Jon Miller on the call. Truthfully, this is one of my all-time favorite baseball moments.
Plus he played in a very unfriendly hitting ballpark. San Fran has that wind coming right off the bay and can turn a close homer into a double (or triple if you’re slow) and he still managed to knock them into McCovey cove multiple times.
I was sitting in upper deck, 3rd base side but facing directly at the right field foul line at home plate - it was the loudest sound ever heard from a bat when he hit that ball! Everyone was just amazed by how powerful that shot was.

Last hitter to hit over .400 batting average for a season....402 to be exact. Williams lost 4 yrs of his career going to fight in WW2 and Korea. He finished with 2,642 hits and 521 home runs. If he doesn't lose those 4 yrs he easily gets over 3,000 hits and probably close to 700 home runs. Joe DiMaggio called Williams the best hitter he ever saw.

I'm from London, England where I still live and have been a Yankees fan since 1081 when I stayed at my Aunt's place off Grand Concourse during a vacation. Reggie Jackson was the sole reason for me loving the Yankees and Baseball.Really rough following them in 80s and 90s- thank goodness for cable, the internet and occasional trips back to NYC and attending the old Yankee Stadium for games, including seeing live (via tv) the Subway Series with the Mets! Anyway, whilst in New York this particular time, I got a ticket as a birthday gift for the game after this one where he hit the home run. It was on a Sunday and from what I recall, Torres intentionally walked Bonds every one of his At-Bats. Everyone was on their feet for each one of them and soundly booed when he got walked. High drama.
Tremendous memory, I believe it was first AB of the game, I was there also, few minutes late, and literally sat down as he hit the ball and literally almost jumped out of my seat getting right back up. I miss Bob Sheppard. He is the Voice of God. I just remember going to the old Yankee Stadium and hearing him echo through the stadium. It just reminded you of the rich history in that ballpark. For those who never had a chance to experience Bob Sheppard and the old Yankee Stadium, I am truly sorry. That was one of the greatest experiences you could have at a baseball game. Was at this game, but arrived late and missed the homer. Some of the best seats I ever sat in too, right behind Yankees dugout. Before we got on the road, knowing we would be late, I said Bonds will probably hit a three run homer in the first. The only way he would see anything to hit would be if there were a couple guys on. We heard it on the radio. Nick Johnson later tied it with a pop fly home run that was the total opposite of Bonds’. Wound up losing in the 10th I think, but got to see Mariano K Bonds.

Look, the guy was as talented as anyone who has ever stepped foot on a baseball field, whether he juiced or not. So yeah, following your own logic to it's natural conclusion, you are denying his talent. Obviously taking performance enhancing drugs makes you better- the clue's in the name. The point is, having the strength to hit the ball out of the park is one thing, but it means nothing if you don't have the otherwordly gift to see the ball trajectory clearer and slower than anyone else in history - to put it another way, think of the other guys in his era who definately used steroids ...McGuire, Sosa, A-Rod, Manny Ramirez etc. These are some of the greatest hitters the game has ever seen...none of them came within 60 HRs of Bonds. I attended that Saturday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium.. I've never seen a ball hit that hard and disappear into the stands that fast in my life. Only a regular attendee to the Old Stadium could appreciate how far he hit that ball. We'd hardly ever seen a ball hit over the section entrances of the third tier. Most of the fans gave him a standing "O". No one threw that ball back. Greatest player I ever saw.
Agreed. I saw Reggie hit one a few rows below there in 1978 but it did not come flying off the bat the way Bonds' did.
A year after this happened, I went to Yankee Stadium and sat in the same area that this HR landed in. I wore my Giants hat, despite the fact that the Giants weren't playing there that day, and a die hard Yankee fan who has sat there for years turned to me and said, "You guys are lucky to have Bonds! Appreciate it, because we Yankee fans think we know everything about baseball sometimes, and when he hit that homer up here last year, we realized, the hype was real!" You can hear that sentiment in the crowd when he hits the ball. The crowd boos him when he walks to the plate, but then they are in awe once he hits it! Steroids or not, Bonds was a beast!

Dude I'm on board with this. I'm almost 40 and I've never seen anyone come anywhere close to being as feared as he was. Every time he came to the plate it was a spectacle. He's also going to be the only 500/500 player in history. No one is going to touch that.

So was I. Tier reserve section 2 behind home plate. From that perspective , I never before or after saw a line drive smashed so hard and fast into the UPPER portion of the third tier.
I have looked and can't find the video, but the only time I saw one leave as fast or faster was when Canseco hit one while with the Sox. It was a left field foul pole camera, and he hit a line drive(although I think it ended up being foul)that left the yard so quickly I was amazed. Of course if I could find it I might see I was just young and it looked far better than it really was.

Plus he played in a very unfriendly hitting ballpark. San Fran has that wind coming right off the bay and can turn a close homer into a double (or triple if you’re slow) and he still managed to knock them into McCovey cove multiple times.
One thing people don't talk about Bonds was his patience at the plate, especially in the later part of his career. The guy had an amazing eye.

I was sitting in upper deck, 3rd base side but facing directly at the right field foul line at home plate - it was the loudest sound ever heard from a bat when he hit that ball! Everyone was just amazed by how powerful that shot was.

Last hitter to hit over .400 batting average for a season....402 to be exact. Williams lost 4 yrs of his career going to fight in WW2 and Korea. He finished with 2,642 hits and 521 home runs. If he doesn't lose those 4 yrs he easily gets over 3,000 hits and probably close to 700 home runs. Joe DiMaggio called Williams the best hitter he ever saw.

I'm from London, England where I still live and have been a Yankees fan since 1081 when I stayed at my Aunt's place off Grand Concourse during a vacation. Reggie Jackson was the sole reason for me loving the Yankees and Baseball.Really rough following them in 80s and 90s- thank goodness for cable, the internet and occasional trips back to NYC and attending the old Yankee Stadium for games, including seeing live (via tv) the Subway Series with the Mets! Anyway, whilst in New York this particular time, I got a ticket as a birthday gift for the game after this one where he hit the home run. It was on a Sunday and from what I recall, Torres intentionally walked Bonds every one of his At-Bats. Everyone was on their feet for each one of them and soundly booed when he got walked. High drama.

Tremendous memory, I believe it was first AB of the game, I was there also, few minutes late, and literally sat down as he hit the ball and literally almost jumped out of my seat getting right back up. I say it was first AB bc of time if day if you look at the sun thats an early afternoon sun, compared to 4 and it would be going down a bit more. Least part of my memory. Enjoy and glad to see so many people who remembered this I thought it was just 1 of 755

I miss Bob Sheppard. He is the Voice of God. I just remember going to the old Yankee Stadium and hearing him echo through the stadium. It just reminded you of the rich history in that ballpark. For those who never had a chance to experience Bob Sheppard and the old Yankee Stadium, I am truly sorry. That was one of the greatest experiences you could have at a baseball game. Watching this clip gave me goosebumps. Rest In Peace to Bob Sheppard as well as Yankee Stadium.

At 0:53, when you have the Bronx faithful rise out of their seats in awe like this, you know you've done something special. Steroids or not, one thing that it can't do for you is teach you how to hit! With that being said, Bonds was one of THE best hitters i've ever seen!

Was at this game, but arrived late and missed the homer. Some of the best seats I ever sat in too, right behind Yankees dugout. Before we got on the road, knowing we would be late, I said Bonds will probably hit a three run homer in the first. The only way he would see anything to hit would be if there were a couple guys on. We heard it on the radio. Nick Johnson later tied it with a pop fly home run that was the total opposite of Bonds’. Wound up losing in the 10th I think, but got to see Mariano K Bonds.
For me, the most amazing thing about that home run was the sound it made. I don't think I've ever heard another homer sound like that.

Look, the guy was as talented as anyone who has ever stepped foot on a baseball field, whether he juiced or not. He hit 30 or more homers for 13 straight seasons, whilst still being the most walked player in the history of the game. Bonds was special.
habyss Your argument is that his swing was compact because he could wait for the ball longer, he could wait for the ball longer because he was so strong, and he was so strong because he juiced. So yeah, following your own logic to it's natural conclusion, you are denying his talent. Obviously taking performance enhancing drugs makes you better- the clue's in the name. The point is, having the strength to hit the ball out of the park is one thing, but it means nothing if you don't have the otherwordly gift to see the ball trajectory clearer and slower than anyone else in history - to put it another way, think of the other guys in his era who definately used steroids ...McGuire, Sosa, A-Rod, Manny Ramirez etc. These are some of the greatest hitters the game has ever seen...none of them came within 60 HRs of Bonds. He had 13 straight 30+ homer seasons....you can only achieve a feat like that if your swing mechanics are godlike, regardless of how strong you are.
