I feel like it's a disservice to your channel community to fail to mention that the M1 Mac Mini (or any Apple hardware running their own silicon) does not support any eGPUs.
AFAIK, only the M1 macs fail to support eGPUs ... for now. Maybe it changes? The M1s are nice - quiet, cool and powerful - yet they do lack a lot of I/O options.
This is a good comment... I know you can run WIndows 11 arm from the insiders preview using Parallels on the Mac Mini. I'm never quite sure if Parallels is just emulation such as VMWare or does Windows install directly on the metal. If it's the latter would Windows still be able to benefit from the eGPU? Or even if you remove the Mac OS all together and run any *nix or Windows.
I'm "retiring" my Intel Macs but I've decided to keep a Mac mini for just-in-case Intel stuff, and now with an eGPU you can even put a current-generation AMD Radeon with it … this is suddenly very practical! Despite the eGPU being useless for M1, the fact is Windows for ARM refuses to run Xbox Pass and I have to have Windows for Intel. None of the Intel Macs have modern GPUs anymore, but with an eGPU that doesn't matter! And it's still half the price of a second-hand 2020 iMac with the best Radeon 5700XT, which is still a generation ago and now you're stuck with it. Versus eGPU that you can keep on upgrading.
I have a 2019 MBP with a Razer Core X and a 3070. It's great, I can run pretty much anything, though I haven't tried VR. Highly recommend if you're still on intel
It would help if you explicitly stated that eGPUs don’t work with the M1 Mac mini. Or am I wrong about that. Yes, you did mention older Mac mini in passing, but you really needed a little more transparency here.
I don’t think his viewers need to be told something like that. It is obvious Apple silicon doesn’t support egpus. You’re mainstream so you’ve probably seen max techs video on why. Apple does not plan to have egpu support, unless Apple make their own egpus. Maybe they will with black magic, they could add more cores to a egpu solution. But that’s all speculation at this point.
@@Qumkuat That comment might be valid for a video on Max Tech, but MacRumors is a lot more mainstream. As a consequence, not all MacRumors readers/viewers are techies. Failing to clearly state that M1 Macs won't profit from an eGPU is a disservice to mainstream viewers, who may not be geeks like you and I.
Gaming and video editing please! Interesting concept to enclose them both in one integrated PC style box! It’d be cool to have a transparent version that you could pimp out with LEDs like the current trend of neon PCs!
This looks quite impressive. Can u please make a video where u actually edit some 8k files or do heavy load works, for better understanding of the performance.
I have a 2018 Mac mini. With the graphics card you suggested. Do I have to jail break them to get a boot up screen or will my Mac recognize them automatically.
This is very interesting. I'm waiting to see how useful a future Mini will be. However my focus is audio not video. Will enhanced GPU have any benefit to audio?
It's nice, but it would be nicer if Apple made a small desktop with a few expansion slots. But that's never gonna happen now especially with Apple Silicon.
Well not necessarily tied to the gpu (except for latency) Was more talking about the system as a whole. The echo III has expansion for audio cards for programs like pro tools
With the eGPU Models and sonnet duomodo Xmas mini, we could install a Lunar client for Minecraft and the 1,000,000💣s could do nothing to the Mac and the Radeon 6800 with metal! PerKing will be proud
why is this not being specific to the m1 ver. of 2021 not earlier 2020? walkThePlanck voiced same query 3 mos ago.EDIT YOUR DARN INFO MacRumors. Just saying generic word "mac mini" is lame
Details of SSD speeds would be just as useful as GPU benchmarks. Sonnet have a habit of crippling NVMe performance in some of their Thunderbolt systems. The utterly useless dock with a pathetic 800MB/s for example. If the Xmac Mini duo modo matches the NVMe speed of their McFiver card in an 8x PCIe 3.0 slot/Thunderbolt enclosure, it’s still excessively expensive for what’s effectively a Thunderbolt dock with Mac Mini mounting abilities. If it can’t even manage that, it’s as waste of money.

Mac is great at sticking it to its customers. The faster apple falls the better.
NOTE: he forgot to mention this is only for Intel based (no M1) bases mac mini's. Nice video!
It seems M1 doesn't need the power of a e-gpu. Or does it?
According to Sonnet, you can use it on M1 Mac Mini as well.

Would love to see some 3D performance specs - especially comparables with the Mac Pro and Imac.
GAMING!!! Lol I am quite curious to see how that system would work on a Mac and how it would improve gaming on a Mac…
I have a 2019 MBP with a Razer Core X and a 3070. It's great, I can run pretty much anything, though I haven't tried VR. Highly recommend if you're still on intel
I was hoping you all did those video editing and gaming tests on this video. Now I'll have to go looking for it. :-(
Now this is a brilliant idea for a clean setup.
this is exactly what i've been looking for

So cool, was considering a set up like this…. Until i saw the pricing 😳
This looks quite impressive. Can u please make a video where u actually edit some 8k files or do heavy load works, for better understanding of the performance.
Hi! I have a doubt about this video test . What Apple S.O. you choosed for this comparison on Metal Geekbech? Monterrey perhaps? Thanks
Need to test with a capture card, that would be a nice stream setup.
I have a 2018 Mac mini. With the graphics card you suggested. Do I have to jail break them to get a boot up screen or will my Mac recognize them automatically.
Literally thinking outside the box. LOL - pretty cool.
Definitely want to see more for video and gaming.
How can I get in contact with? I would like to run a build idea by you and get your opinion when u have tine
This is very interesting. I'm waiting to see how useful a future Mini will be. However my focus is audio not video. Will enhanced GPU have any benefit to audio?
No
The equivalent would be getting a sound card with dsp processing like a UAD
In this case you’d want something like the echo three module for PCIe expansion and then the audio cards like suggested above.
It's nice, but it would be nicer if Apple made a small desktop with a few expansion slots. But that's never gonna happen now especially with Apple Silicon.
I have an M1 Mac mini so no GPU for me. I plan to just build a gaming PC eventually and keep the systems separated.
Incredibile. Have you tested this build with cloud gaming as Assetto corsa or something else?
Hard disks incloser

Audio production ... what audio production suite uses GPU compute to accelerate computation ?
Well not necessarily tied to the gpu (except for latency) Was more talking about the system as a whole. The echo III has expansion for audio cards for programs like pro tools
Rme has the lowest katency pcie audio cards.
Thats something they shoulddo that could help with plugins.
Nvdia does do noise cancelation. with gpus
This is very cool.
Yeah, need some gaming benchmarks please.
Yes more videos!
They should make a dock module with more thunderbolt 3 and display ports
This is badass
Will the macmini w egpu run 4 monitors?
Hi does this work with m1?
Can you use these to add more RAM to the M1 mac mini?
No. You cannot augment RAM in an Mac Mini, iMac, laptops--only their desktop.
faster than M1 Mini?
With the eGPU Models and sonnet duomodo Xmas mini, we could install a Lunar client for Minecraft and the 1,000,000💣s could do nothing to the Mac and the Radeon 6800 with metal! PerKing will be proud
And by the way this is for gamers
It’s cool but expensive.
need more reviews

Good 💚
That price is a joke.
Jokes on you, buddy!

Someone needs to hack the m1 macs for egpu

Gaming !!!!
Faster than fastest…
Geek bench represents nothing
