  • The Cleveland Smart Sole 4 golf chipper is designed to help golfers with their short games, particularly hitting chip shots around the green. Golf chip shots can be some of the most difficult shots to execute in golf, and having a golf chipper like the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 in the bag can help players save strokes on their short games.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald is joined by Cleveland Golf's Eddie Drye to discuss all the benefits of the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 chipper. Then, online master fitter Taylor Ledwein joins for some indoor testing of the Smart Sole 4 chipper.

I put this in the bag about a year ago and I haven’t looked back. Once you learn the carry and roll ratio it can be a very deadly weapon.
To preface this (I don’t mean to offend anyone) but I’m not some senior player, golf hack, or newbie golfer. I play off a 5.3 handicap and this club helps keep me there.
My short game started getting better when I put the cbx2 wedges in my bag and my success with those clubs had me take a look at the chipper.
The secret sauce to this club is its length and its lie. It’s just about the length of a putter and it sits like a putter as well. That makes it way easier to aim than your wedge and the wide sole makes those slight mishits come out way better than what you would get with your wedge.
I used to use this only for green side chips but I’ve started using it from further and further out, as far as 60 yards. The only time I don’t use it is when I have some kind of hazard to carry (usually a bunker).
Like I said it did take some work when it came to figuring out ball position and the subsequent carry and roll but now that I have that dialed in it’s not leaving the bag.
I play as a single quite a bit and have been paired with a a lot of random people. They are all shocked at how good my short game is and as they become more curious they see what club I’m using and it totally changes their opinion of the club.
They most often say if it’s good enough for a player like me then it’s good enough for them lol. Don’t sleep on this club. It’s definitely worth a try and like they mentioned in review it’s great for punch out recovery shots as well!

I have used the Cleveland 37degree Niblick for 15 years and you’ll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands. In addition to long short bump and run shots just off the green, I use it for everything. Out of the sand, out of the rough, and 60 yard bump and run shots. It is the most versatile club in my bag. It is not a niche product. Even the pros would benefit from using this club if they could get past their egos. Everybody should want to get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible. The bump and run is how golf was originally played before course design tricked up the course and required high lofted shots.

I purchased the Smart Sole Chipper this summer and I love it. Even though I don’t hit it perfectly every time, I have so much more confidence with it. As soon as I see where my ball is located near the green, I grab for the Chipper. One thing I noticed from both of you on the practice shots, you need to hold the club much more upright. Since it’s a putter stroke, you should be holding it like a putter, not a wedge.

I think chippers provide far more consistency as it is the same set up as the putter. When you vary your set up with your wedges more variables come into play that may not give the same consistent shot. Unless your are Seve then you should think about investing in one of these. I like the Cleveland because you can hit it from further distances.

I have one and I absolutely love it. The great part about this club is that I can hit full shots with it as well. It goes the same distance as my gap wedge, so I replaced the GW with this club. It is so versatile. I love it so much that I want Cleveland to make a 38 and 34 degree CW as well!!

Got it for Christmas 2022 and it has really helped the short game around the green. I have even used it as far out as as 60-70 yards.

Bought one of these at the start of the season. It’s a game changer. A confidence club. Now when I’m chipping I’m looking to hole my shot and more often then not it’s within 2 or 3 feet of the hole. My friends call it a “cheat stick” it’s that good.

Think it is a great fit in the Winter when Fairways and around the Greens are thin.. Less chance of chunks.

Where are Jackie and Thomas? Good video. This is a great club to hit shots around the green during the winter off muddy lies, straw, hardpan of when the ball is down in a divot.

I had the smart soul for chipper in my bag for two years however, for me, it turned out to be somewhat of a one trick pony. I recently traded it for a 48° zip cord I find a chip much better by choking down to the bottom of the grip on a variety of clubs, depending on the situation.

The chipper is a club that should have an adjustable loft hosel! Cleveland chipper has more loft than Ping chipper.

If they ever allow a 15th club in the bag, it should be required to be a chipper. I carry a smart sole chipper and I just call it a utility wedge.

Play the ball forward and around the green it will come in high. Outside of my driver, this is the only club in my bag I refuse to take out. Every golfer will benefit from this club if they let their egos go. I play with some really good golfers and around the green they lose strokes every now and the because the use the wedges instead of a chipper. I'll use mine out to 65 yards if the situation calls for it.

I’m thinking of ditching my 3 wood for the chipper. And maybe consolidate sand and lob wedges and trying a mini driver.
