Why is that so important to you?? What in your tiny mind thinks you'd be alone in listening to any song no matter when it was released? I just don't get the need to have people agree with you or like your comment that badly
The voices that are this tracks backing vocals blow my mind. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, and Kenny Loggins 🤯🤯the 80's were a totally different animal compared to todays music.
It’s really her song. I’m a big fan of Jon Anderson, but for me this is Donna’s song. The song is like a pet who found itself an owner. (Terry Pratchett would have understand.)
The song is in its origin by Jon & Vangelis (from the Album "The friends of Mr.Cairo" (1981)) , súng ´by Jon Anderson and this is an alltime high, the best version!!! But remarkable, that Donna gave a Mega-Contribution to this song with this cover!!!
What an amazing achievement - a diminutive amazingly talented Lancashire-man (from UK) writes a song - which this gorgeous American-Euro-influenced lady turns into a pop-gospel classic!! This is the true coming together of spirits! It's not that hard a lesson!! Peace and love!✌✌☺☺
Donna Summer was really a great talent, so underrated she grew to be something of a pioneer over the decades. This great song was a staple track in a store where I worked weekends as a teenager in the early 80s. It helped make my working day a pleasure 😊 I was stunned when Donna made this beautiful mesmerising song with a fantastic world music feel. It was nothing like her equally great dance songs she made with the legendary electronic music wizard Giorgio Moroder in the 70s, but this was a world beating mature hit with a lot of thought and intelligence behind it. Brings back many memories of the early 80s in a lingering meditative way ❤
OMG! I loved this song so much as a kid, didn't know any of the words, 40 years later didn't know who the artist was and have been trying to find it. My daughter showed me how using Google, microphone, and search a song. I whistled it, and it found it! I am complete now- great song, great memories. I knew it had spiritual significance back then, but I wasn't able to confirm it until now. This song flooded back into my memory during the quarantine and I would replay it in my mind to make myself happy.
This is such a spiritual song with deep meaning to me - it still waters my eyes and gives me goosebumps to listen to it. RIP Ms. Summer - you were such a gift.
I had the privilege of owning this album more than 20 years ago. This was my Favorite song on the album along with The Woman in Me. I had never heard anything so beautiful. I was in my early teens when I owned this album and first heard this song. Fast Forward 30 or more years later in my mid 40's. I am still loving this. It brings tears to my eyes. Rest in Peace LaDonna Gaines Sudano aka Donna Summer.
Is a very atipical song! Nothing to do with Disco or Rock, just a powerful tune in which Donna Summer gived a great performance. After more than forty years still at the top of the list.
Such an EPIC masterpiece. Donna may be gone BUT she left a body of work that will always be remembered. Pure quality and the FINEST of FINE vocals, lyrics and production! R.I.P!
Strange, we do things, despite fears, because we have to, makes our work all the more great, because we pushed through the worry and doubt and did what we had to anyway. Look at Donna's unblinking stare and comment at 1:39 Sounds like a signal from you bring me to meet your sound and I will bring you to my heart Well she couldn't stop it. Had to be said. The message, whatever it meant to her, had to be dredged up, emblazoned at the cost of anything else in her life's purpose. That's courage!
This song gave me courage, strength and it got me through living 2 years by myself in downtown San Francisco in my late 20's; thankfully, it was played frequently on WBLX in 1982.
Donna Summer was one of the great musical icons of music. She was one of the most underrated musical legends of our time. Her beauty was only surpassed by her musical talent. She was apart of a generation where music really was music and it meant something special. There will never be another one like her.
I love this song, as well as Jon and Vangelis' original version. I've been a big fan of Donna since the disco era and this is easily my favorite song of hers. This reminds me how, as an 11 year old in the late 70's, I played the 17 plus minute version of 'MacArthur Park Suite' so much that I wore out the vinyl. She was an incredible talent. Thank you, Donna for your great contribution to music history, and thank you for sharing your incredible gift with us. Rest in peace.
Anything Quincy Jones touches becomes pure gold. Now Donna Summer was something else. Her voice is so addictive. I can't get enough of it. One of the greatest set of pipes ever. Fantastic timing, phrasing and she could go from sweet'n'easy to belting it out big time - and everything exacly where it should be. Vastly underrated!!!!
A true powerhouse in musical history. After One Direction fade away and are forgotten with the rest of today's shite, like the Spice Girls before them...You will still have this angel being listened to by someone in the future. She was so beautiful and so bloody talented. RIP Donna xxx
Donna Summer was a magnificent artists who transcended ethnic boundaries and thus got into impressive musical expressions, as here. I admired her ever since I was a teenage man.
Tied 4 the most top 40 hits in the 70s, 2 top 5 hits in August of 79 n did it again later in 1979, top hits in the 80s and a top 10 in the 90s. She is not underated.
I have only hear this song before today from Jon Anderson and Vangelis....Donna Summer does a really excellent job. Not too often I hear the same song from two different artists sound outstanding like they do!
After following Donna Summer's career, this is easily my favorite song by her. I love Jon Anderson and Vangelis' version of their composition, but Donna and Quincy Jones brought the song to such a different and amazing level. Just an amazing song that is in heavy rotation on my playlist. Donna, you are still loved and missed.
I worked in an Art Store in Nashville in 1999-2000 and she was one of our regular customers. She came in often to purchase high quality colored pencils, and was always so lovey to those of us who worked together at this small locally owned store in Green Hills. We had many Customers who were in the Music industry, and they were all so kind to us, as this town is their home and this is their neighborhood, and they, like all of us, have hobbies, so, as artist ourselves, we enjoyed showing everyone new products and techniques that might enrich their off-time & artistry. But, full admission, It was always fun to see her roll up in her bad ass range rover, Looking everyday effortlessly gorgeous in yoga pants and a baseball cap with all her hair pulled back in a simple pony tail. xoxo K
I love Donna Summers. She was soo awesome. So sad she died too young. I like to think she is up there with my other hero, David Bowie and they're working on an album together!

Yesterday's news was really sad. In my mind Donna Summer owned the first image of a black, beautiful, sophisticated, female. I'm thinking of a host of her songs that are such a part of my musical history. State of Independence stands out as supremely special. Not only was it a great song (VanGelis I'll always thank you for this) but I remember it somewhat elevating her as a mature artist after all the controversy during her earlier career. Donna R.I.P. knowing you brought beauty to the world.
It makes me cry too. Just so uplifting with an anthemic and drammatic cresendo of choir voices towards the end. Awe inspiring. Goodbye Donna. Rest In Peace and thanks for all the joy you brought into this world with your wonderful music.
Yep, I'm here because of the Quincy Jones interview, too. I remember when this song came out. She was making her transition from disco, which was basically dead by 1982. I hear only a slight similarity between this and "Billie Jean". This and "They Don't Care About Us", yes. I can definitely hear that.
Absolutely beautiful. 2024 anyone?
I am 61 now young at heart and this reminds me of my youth x x
Even the intro is better than anything in the charts!

sorry i really cant heard michaels voice in the song im sure he just only credit himself but never sing backing vocals in donna's song
There are video clips showing the choir recording the song - Michael is very much there, along with so many other great voices-
I absolutely agree 👍
❤he is in this just backing really ax

Her best, and most underrated song.
Except it's not her song. She's covered it.

Wonderful song by a precious lady so sadly missed xx
The way Donna sung...she made it seem effortless. Such a pure voice.
Yes! My thoughts, she was effortlessly brilliant. Legend ❤
Thanks Donna for this wonderful song RIP

Me but where is it
9 seconds to 14 seconds you hear the bassline with no other music. It is much faster than Billie Jean but does sound similar sequence of notes
its the exact same sequence of notes except the first note is down an octave
BRENT SILBY ok, after you said that I slowed it down and yeah. Barely similar. Just barely.
Cory Me! Listening to it, it sounds similar, but Michael probably told her he was gonna sample 😂

An empowering and underated track!!! June 2024 ❤🎉
Love seeing the footage from NYC from 1982. Donna Summer knew how to pick songs. She was one of her generations best.
Vangelis was on fire in the early 80's. On the heels of an Oscar for Chariots of Fire, he gets the cover treatment by Donna Summer!
He did so much better stuff than Chariots of Fire, but this cover is awesome. The music for the original Blade Runner was as good as it gets.
Still lovin this song in 2022
Still have the original on vinyl from back in the days.. What a song this was and still is,
