She was actually 9 years and 2 months old in this video. The band she worked with here, fondly referred to her as "The Boss", because she knew exactly what she wanted and how she wanted it done. She worked with most of them on a few occasions.

We all know Angelina has the power to belt with the best of them, but the great thing about Angelina is that she only uses that power if it is needed. If it's not required for the song, she doesn't do it. If you are continuing chronologically, I would say you are in for a treat when you get to Angelina at age 10, a benchmark year for her. You will see not only the additional tools she has added to her vocal abilities, but you will also see her honing her stage presence. I promise you, EVERY song at age 10 is a masterpiece.
I second that. She really got a grip and no longer relied on mimicry and found solid space in her tone and delivery. Her song I'm Still Holding Out For You still stands as one of her best in her career
This was the first song I heard her sing. First I had to stop in the middle to make sure I wasn’t slipping into the dark. When I listened to it all the way I was worried about her vocal cords. Then with the next song I heard I knew that wasn’t a worry.
For a whole list of reasons, some we can guess about, this girl performs without any of the limits we humans normally wrestle with. She shows no fear, no nervousness, no self-consciousness. Beneath that shy young girl exterior lies a consummate artist. Angelina is a once in a lifetime talent, to state the obvious.

They give everything to complete this masterpiece! This little Norwegian girl reads the English lyrics while singing! She is from Norway and they speak Norwegian there. English is Angelina's 3rd language! Already at 5-6 years old, she understands exactly what is meant in the English lyrics! Incredible!

Honestly,me coming across Angelina Jordan a little over a year now,as far as music is concerned,is the best thing that's happened to me in probably 30 years and it just so happens,that "I Put A Spell On You" was the first for me and since then,I rarely listen to anyone else and I grew up listening to Aretha Franklin,Gladys Knight,Patti Labelle,Janis Joplin,Dionne Warwick,Marilyn McCool etc.and yet,I'm listening to Angelina Jordan instead of listening to them,she on another level
Glad to hear of a somewhat more recent 'angel' like me (4 months now). Same thing - finding her has been the best musical experience of my life (61 yo), by far. Different background, more classic rock 70s/80s Led Zeppelin, Chicago, Police, and occasional spattering of older blues/jazz/soul artists. She just blows them all out of the water, I've listened to little else since finding her.

This style was a one off because Angelina was advised it could damage her voice long term. We were privileged to see yet another step in her journey of self discovery. I have heard people talk of how comfortable and secure she is in her own voice. That's because she knows what it can do. How far she can push it. This is one of the ways she found out. @@53mandevilla when you have a prodigy on your hands you don't have opinions. They asked experts. Which is probably why many people have commented on the fact she does not seem to have problems like Adele. Experts who also advised on minimal vocal coaching as ' no one should interfere with her natural god given tone', that any vocal coaching concentrated on breath control and vocal health. So instead her majority of musical training was piano, guitar violin and flute. We see her playing keyboard and guitar...not violin or flute...so maybe she did not take to them. I think that influenced her early selection of how she performed her early runs. They are very clean almost instrumental.
The whole song is just brilliant but that ending is just epic. That guy on the Sax is pretty darn good too.

Most singers do Nina Simone and more recently Annie Lennox's version, She nò! Use the harder one than Screamin' Jay Hawkins and make a masterpiece, I'm sure at his age, and not only that no one has ever come close to a performance like that, perfect reaction, good life and music ... Massimo👍
From stories I read years ago, this was an all day studio effort by Screamin' Jay. He actually couldn't do what the producer wanted and his sax accompanist (Sam 'The Man' Taylor) took him out of the studio midway thru the day and got him drunk. It was only then that he truly let his hair down and finished the session and came away with that masterpiece. I'm willing to bet it didn't take Angelina more than a couple of hours at the most to come up with her rendition, which is shocking.

A lot of her Angels have called this a masterpiece from a 9 year old. I simply just call this fantastic! You were wondering what she is going to sound like when she's 15, 16, and now 17 years old? All I can say is that her voice has become better, stronger, and she has a lot more control with what she wants to do with her voice. Like all great singers, her voice is unique now, in a very good way! When she begins to sing, you automatically will say to yourself, " Yeah, that's Angelina!"

There are no words adequate enough to describe Angelina, she just is. Someone who defies all logic and can pull off such an incredible and very difficult performance at 9 years of age. Her parents named her well because she really is an Angel, a voice of an Angel and the soul of an Angel. Not only is she a talented vocalist, but she plays multiple instruments, speaks several languages and is so Angelic in her compassion for others is just amazing. I can't believe such a powerful and well controlled voice came out of such a small girl, and now that she is all grown up and finished school, she is ready to be shown to the rest of the world who have not yet had the chance to hear her sing or hear her story.
Hi, Alex. You are NOT ready for this. Yes, that is the guy, "Screaming" Jay Hawkins. Angelina's own arrangement is based on his 1956 original. You can see the sheer musicality she brought to translating his performance with the composition into her version while totally honoring him as she did with the candle. I agree with you: PERFECT. 9 !!! She helped rearrange the song. Often times, when the lyrics to a song are not appropriate for her, the lyrics are changed to accommodate her. Those songs then truly become hers. Next time you watch this wait for the very end and watch her raise her right arm and put it on a ledge as she looks straight ahead and she is in deep thought, "Could I have done it better?" It's only a guess but her facial expression will convince you that is exactly what she is thinking. THIS VIDEO I PREDICT WILL RECEIVE WELL OVER 100M VIEWS (and could be more)!

Thank you for featuring Angelina again, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
(k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
(l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
That was great, you didn't dare to interrupt the song. Angelina in the studio. She knows exactly what she can do there and uses this place as a playground. She introduces the musicians involved (as if that were normal) a few months beforehand as her band. (You know the Trumpetist from "Summertime")

She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. In the band, she was called a boss.
I've been waiting for you to get to this. I knew you would appreciate it. "The Boss" controlled this arrangement to get exactly what she wanted. Most have to watch it several times to make sense of what we just saw. Our minds have trouble making sense of what our eyes see and ears hear. This performance was phenomenal from start to finish And the last note was frosting on the cake. Not only her voice, control, methods, but also her presence, hands and arms gestures, facial expressions, putting her whole body into the performance when rose on her tip toes. She's feeling this song and she made us feel it. Good reaction. Every song she does is remarkable but there are a handful that blow the top off likelihood, even possibility. This is one of those.
I have watched at least 50 reactions to this video. But I never enjoyed a reaction as much as this. Your genuine appreciation of AJ's talent and ability to deliver emotion is palpable. I hope that you can continue to show restraint and work you way through the year-by-year growth of this wondrous talent. This was just a couple of weeks after Angelina turned 9.
I think that there is a wealth of remarkable stuff to see during her 10-year old year. I will leave it up to others to guide you to specific videos from her concerts that year. The one caveat that I would add is do not bypass either of the two outstanding live deliveries by AJ of "Feeling Good." Either will do because both are great.
One other thought for those who will guide you. Please be sure that Alex gets a chance to see jovial/upbeat Angelina in songs like "I Feel Good", "Lovin' You" or "Somethings Got a Hold on Me!"
