As a kid from Yorkshire I absolutely loved this game, getting to play Yu-gi-oh in a story set in my home region. It stings to know it's a 5 hour game when I spent dozens of hours trying and failing to beat it when I was like 12
"Mirror Wall" was so OP in this game. It was basically a game buster as soon as it was out.
I learned that the hard way!
Gorgans eye as well. Perma paralyzes anything thats set.
This is by far one of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh games of all time, it's extremely nostalgic! I really hope one day we'll get a remastered version. ❤
I love this game so much I feel like porting/tweaking it to PC just for myself
This was the first yugioh game I'd ever played
This game would need a MASSIVE overhaul and brush of fresh modernized paint. There’s a Steam group that’s remade this while using the game Tabletop Simulator, but I’d rather have this available to play officially or physically. That’s my wish…
A remake/sequel would be Amazing!!
It would be nice, I don’t see a universe where Konami would remake this product however. It’s not a good introduction to the card game, the product they want to sell.
God the music alone of this game takes me back. I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh since I was 12 but I always have a fondness of this game and wish they'd remaster it
I have a nostalgic fondness for this game despite its numerous flaws. Something I really appreciate about the older Yugioh video games is that they actually try to do interesting things with the IP and not just one-for-one emulate the card game. Even if the results are very hit or miss in quality
I had a Gamecube but not a PS2 growing up, so I never played Duelist of the Roses, but I'm reminded of Yu-Gi-Oh: The Falsebound Kingdom for the Gamecube. It's a wildly different Yu-Gi-Oh experience, a kind of Yu-Gi-Oh strategy RPG where you have three monsters assigned to each character and you duke it out with other team's monsters on a large map. There are some notable flaws with the game but I loved it when I was a kid and I replayed it all the time. Even though Justin's review here seemed quite critical, it did make me want to play Duelist of the Roses; I love seeing that era where Konami really went "out there" and tried different things with Yu-Gi-Oh.
I ADORED this game growing up
I have such an incredible amount of nostalgia for this game and would love if they made a sequel, but it has been two decades so I have completely lost hope. From time to time I play it on the emulator and try and find a new strat, but Pumpkin king is absolutely insane with just a plant and a zombie.
It's so fun to figure out what each strategies main fusions are. Realizing I could make kairyu shin with a water and a dragon revolutionized my water playthrough.
@@MonkeyFightTCG Agreed, I feel like the framework this game had was great but there wasn't enough done with it, especially on the late game challenge end. The system seems like 2 vs 2 would have been really cool. Love your videos btw, I watched your entire series ranking every Yugioh archetype. Can't wait for the support that breaks gate guardian!
As much as I love this game, my first deck was the Zombie deck way back when this game came out. Pumpking fusion spam made this a walk in the park and it is basically: stall until you win with one attack.
I love this game, along with Forbidden Memories. I so want remasters of these games.
I used to beg for them to remake or make a sequel to the game as yugioh has evolved so much but it’s much too late. I used to think back when zexal was out they could make a new one with the synchro and xyz incorporated into it. Like tuners could tune monsters on the field if you overlap the cards or the same concept but the same level cards would make xyz monsters. This game is just so nostalgic and fun I miss it so much.
They should make this game online
Love your picture 😉😘
I miss this era of crazy experimental YGO games rather than getting 1:1 recreations of the horribly broken TCG. Not making a proper 3D Dungeon Dice Monsters game is absolutely criminal.
I downloaded it in tabletop simulator, but never tried it.
I'd buy this game in a heartbeat if they added it to the playstation store.
Surprised you didn't mention duel master k it's in whatever this game calls free duel. He faces you with a copy of your deck so you can get extra copies of your best cards and breeze though the game if you can make pumpking your golden throughout the campaign
I had this game for a long time but my nostalgia for it was 0, since younger me didnt understand how to play at all so I barely touched it. Now with the Internet and the guides detailing what the game doesn't, I can handle the game and I'm having a blast.
the codes in these old games were usually the card number found in the bottom of the card.
This one different, the codes have letters as well
this games codes are a limited few that unlock several very strong cards.
to get them you need to beat both sides of the story multiple times.
I have put hundreds of hours into this game as a kid, I don't know what it was, but I loved the grind. I made a fusion deck with that rose-thorn lady as the deck leader. The entire deck was just low cost plants and female monsters, and based around fusion. Other cards in the deck were female monster and plant power ups. It was so busted. My obsession as a kid was getting the deck cost so low that the deck could fight and win against every opponent on the board.
Flipping adore this game, I still come back to it every now and again to build a new deck. Sadly the criticisms are true, the AI leaves so much to be desired. If this could be modded or remade with updated AI I'd gladly fall in love with it all over again.
I remember this game being really cool back in the day
This one and forbidden memories had the best music
I love the music loops. It's a shame they're so short
Great review! I never owned a PS2 or an Xbox (we were a Nintendo household) so I never got to play those Yu-Gi-Oh games. I always thought Duelists of the Roses looked really cool from the box art, haha. Despite the criticisms, this video did make me curious to play the game.
Do you plan on reviewing Yu-Gi-Oh: The Falsebound Kingdom at some point?
Eventually yes
I looooooved this game. It was so fun to overpower undead cards with Pumpkin King, or evolve an Perfect Ultimate Moth (or whatever it’s called). Tbh, I don’t think I ever ran into the exploitable mechanics discussed here, as it was never so difficult that you’d need to try to cheat the AI.
Consideringx the only other Yugioh game I’d played was Forbidden Memories, this game redeemed Yugioh for me.
ah yes, the Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, the cheat code to cheese all the game no matter how shit the rest of it was
"No different strategies"??? That's just wrong.
Heishin, Labyrinth Ruler, PaniK and Pegasus all have extremely different playstyles to the average Duelist. Especially PaniK. That dude will literally run away the entire game just to lure you into his Trap Cards.
This one I have fond memories of. First saw it a friends birthday sleepover and knew I had to get it. I'll always have a fondness for the Roaring Ocean Snake and Aqua Dragon fusions I discovered though I don't remember now. Those two monsters could change the terrain to Aqua whenever they flipped over or attacked an enemy monster. Very helpful for Pegasus's Toon World Panel since it halved non toons. I remember taking advantage of the poor AI and the 99 turn limit as well. My sister enjoyed this game too. She was actually determined enough to get Dark Magician Girl. I forget how many battles it took her, but it was probably 30 to 40 wins against Yugi.
BROH YA DID IT!!! ... very few and rarely U get to see content on this game despite being such an interesting take on YGO (despite short comings and broken stuff)...
Def my fav spin-off with good elements in the core-gameplay and cool asthetics...
Thanks for the content 👍🏻
Fun fact: the starter decks change based on the first letter of your name. If you want different options, try out different names. I personally loved used the pumpkin guy.
this game had me in the same deathgrip monster rancher did with restarting to see the randomization
@oozingtulip1534 all for the best mon in the game to be a freakin rabbit.
I never played this game but always wanted to try it. I played capsule monsters a ton when I was younger. Will you be doing any other yugi games?
Whenever I have time I plan to play the other yugioh games. Next on the list is either forbidden memories or capsule coliseum.
@@MonkeyFightTCG thats hella hype. Can't wait to see them when they drop.
I think a lot of the game's fun opens up when you discover the equip and other power up cards that allow you to be consistent with every monster, so wvwn Unhappy Maiden and Turu-Purun can regularly face Blue Eyes White Dragon and win.
The promotion process takes too long, though, especially as story mode is a boss rush rather than each major duelist having 3-5 subordinates.
This was as close as we got to actual yuioh on consoles back then. It sucks they never used all the monsters models again they created for another game.the next games were the tag team games and that's it.
If you like this game, or feel it could be great if it was fixed: There's a mod, called DoTR Redux, which makes battles harder, gives better decks/monsters, speeds up deck master leveling, adds new duels, changes fields and hidden cards, etc. It's a lot of fun and makes it great.
Hey I don't wish to bother you but would you know how to get an emulator for the game as I keep running into websites that want personal info for the download.
Or is that normal?
a PS2 emulator's what you want. PCSX2 is the one I use, and you can find links that are safe on like emulatorzone. Be careful with those sites that ask for info or surveys or something, they're all bad ideas.@@hunterskidmore1672
Used to love this game when I was a kid, Aqua Dragon was my favorite monster, so op
I think this is the only game where Kiaba is actually a pretty decent guy and Yugi ends up taking credit for your victories, where as Kiaba insures that you will be remembered and even sends you back to your own time as well as making sure you will have the support of his decedents and Yugi doesn't even try to send you back to your own time, you just get stuck in the past and aren't even mentioned or remembered.
My absolute favorite game. It deserves a remaster or Sequel.
Duelist of the roses and Forbidden memories are my favorite Yugioh Games. I always wanted to play Falsebound kingdom on Gamecube but never got the chance to in the 2000's, now I have a chance to emulate it in full HD on Dolphin, can't wait to eventually get to it. (currently playing Ape Escape 3 in HD on PS2 emulator)
The card number system isn't really a 'cheat', the idea from Konami was integration with the irl YuGiOh card game, so all the cards had an eight-digit number on them. I can't remember how you do it in DoR, it's been so long since I played, but in FMR there was a specific menu option and not some weird cheat method of doing it, and you earned star chips from duels to pay for them
So unfortunately the card code system does not connect to actual cards in this game. There is no way to obtain the codes outside of promotional magazines or an outside guide.
This game is by for me the best yugioh game/sim period:
Reasons:
Great scoring
Wacky duelist kingdom like mechanics
Duel animations
To this day of 2023 no other Yugioh game/sim has event came close to the duel animations. A modern ver/sequel to this game would be POG.
Side note(s): Yugioh Capsuel Colliseum was also a fun game which gave me uber Harry Potter chess vibes.
Also the fact this game has a multiplayer option both astounds and perplexes me even back in the day. Cuz mind you back in the day multiplayers like COD, Halo, and James Bond Golden Eye were around and back in those days homies would casually screen peak in those games. So you basically had to have your friends look away from your screen to play the rounds.
EDIT:
Also, also I wish the modern Yugioh games/sims put some effort into making 3D monster models and or duel Animations. I get that there's over 11,000+ cards in the game but Duelist of the Roses definitely has been the bar to set for as far as animation goes. I mean imagine Master Duel with moving 3D animated monster models like the monsters here.
this games battle animations look awesome, i would love to see something like this that just replicates the mechanics of the card game in the GOAT format (2005 era rules) instead of changing the rules so drastically
This game was ahead of its time. I think if it got a remake on Next Gen consoles, it would be more popular than the original. It's not typical Yugioh are requires battle strategies instead of chain links to win.
My absolute favorite card in this game as a kid was swordstalker. My favorite deck I built was just built around spamming every single other creature in the deck into the fusion mechanic so they’d go to the graveyard on purpose. Then swordstalker would get buffed for each creature in the graveyard. I could easily one hit kill every opponent by dumping 30 creatures and making him have like 5000 attack.
This game was great for unique fun strategies. If only the cards were easier to get.
What would you guys think if Konami remastered duelist of the roses, capsule monster coliseum and other offshoots like this for modern systems?
We atleast a remake of this game. Add some modern retrain and fusions. And have more characters like Rebecca, Duke, odion, marik, Valon, Raphael, alistor, Vivian, leon, zigfried and dartz. Also let you duel a copy of your own deck.
Yugi's grandpa did actually beat me with Exodia the first time I fought him because he walled me with high defence monsters and I couldn't break through.
The zombie deck is best for the kiaba side, most the badguys use fields good for zombies, plus pumking cheese
Bought this game used at Hollywood video game crazy story & after playing it once realizing it's not like the card game , I never tried and just went back to dueling myself . After watching this I wish I wasn't so close minded back then
Just subscribed :) Would love to see you review Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum some day.
It's on the list for a potential review. far warning it's either forbidden memories or hidden kingdom next
Loved this game although I never owned it myself but I watched my cousin play it a lot. I'd love a remake or remaster
Hell, I'd love even a basic port
This game and duel masters for the ps2 were awesome. Loved them so much
I love this game and go back to it every now and then, but once you beat the story, it's time to put it back on the shelf for a couple years again. Trying to do everything in this game is a nightmare experience.
8:42 That's this game's version of DarkNite/Nightmare from Dark Duel Stories and Forbidden Memories who comes back one last time in Falsebound Kingdom. In Japan, Forbidden Memories (which was actually Yugioh Duel Monsters III: Tri-Holy God Advent in Japan while Duel Monsters II was subtitled "Dark Duel Stories" in Japan but we never got the first two games) and Duelists of the Roses are named as part of the "Yugioh True Duel Monsters" series as True Duel Monsters: Sealed Memories and True Duel Monsters 2: Succeeded Memories. Why it only has two games, why DarkNite/Nightmare left the Duel Monsters series for the True Duel Monsters series and why Falsebound Kingdom isn't even named as a spinoff of the series I have no idea.
Personally I'd give this game an 8/10 but I'm biased.
This game has a very special place in my heart. As a boy I've always enjoyed Chess and playing Yu-Gi-Oh! Merging both things is very fun.
Every 2-3 years I always emulate this game and replay it. Since I'm kind of season vet at the game, it's not that hard even without cheat codes. The problem with this game is its either too hard or too easy.
This game has insane potential for online competitive play but it will never happen. This was done during an experimental phase of Konami's game development years and those days are long gone. Also Konami would rather make Yu-Gi-Oh games free-to-play instead so a sequel or remaster would likely make you pay for packs or something along those lines.
It's a shame this game will forever be buried in history, along with the Duel Monsters series of Yu-Gi-Oh! and the original cast.
one thing i noticed after playing the game like 4 times. the AI is stupid hard until you beat them. after they lose they become push overs
good video! I loved this game back in the day. I hated the slot machine for cards tho. I wanted a Dark Magician so bad lol
I loved the English history theme, tbh. An underused vibe.
I hope they bring this back, or someone revives this game in the modern era.
I'm telling you, modern sequel to duelists of the roses, but Jaden Yuki is napoleon.
@@MonkeyFightTCG I saw the mod you posted in the server of someone bringing the game 'up a little bit' such as improving the ai n what not. do you plan on covering that on your second channel to? And yes. I need Jaden screaming "VIVA REVOLUTION!" in an overly french accent. I need this in my life before I die.
I've seen the mod. I'm considering streaming it eventually it seems fun
i think that most fusions in DoTR are similiar to Forbidden Memories (example: Female monster + rock-type = mystical sand, female + fairy-type = either mystical elf or dark witch).
Have you played the Redux mod for this game?? I thought it significantly improved the AI.
i remember as a kid, my main strategy was to lure the enemy boss into a corner by chasing them and then surrounding it to win.
This game was my first TCG I actually learned the mechanics & got me into too the cards for more than just looks, even had Pokémon cards before but never had any incentive to learn the game, only yugi oh 😭
Brilliant design for a game that's gonna be trapped in Konami vaults for all of eternity
Great video! Gave me a really good idea of the game
Bro, the nostalgia! I loved this game, this play style would also be pretty appealing today
I just bought a ps2 and GameCube from a pawnshop, bought Duelists of Rose and Falsbound Kingdom. So ready for mail to arrive
I kinda wish they'd try this gameplay style again
I love this game ♥️
Bugs are amazing in this game, as arsenal bug gets a massive boost and transforms a lot of terrain, and the perfectly great moth is easy to summon with the precursors (need to wait 1 turn or 5 turns depending on which monster it is). This is still my favorite yugioh game, despite its flaws.
I remember hating this game and going back to Forbidden Memories for years.
I still go back and play this, usually on emulator on my steamdeck but sometimes on ps2 for nostalgia.
Me and my older brother used to make insane decks, I remember we faced off a lot which always ended with both of us with 9999 attackers offing eachother. I've memorized a lot of fusions and effects because I've played it so much lol
I love this game overall. But I can't really replay it as I have found the overall dominant strategy.
Robotic Knight.
The starter decks you're given as options are generated based on the letters inthe name you input. So, by finding the right letters, I would start with the Robotic Knight deck, power through the first duels until I unlocked Bandit Keith, cheese him over and over to get as many machine cards as possible, then use mirror matches against an AI to get copies of all the cards I want more of.
Eventually, I'd have a deck with 4 Robotic Knights (3 playable and 1 deck master), 3 Wasteland cards and a bunch of strong machines and machine boosting cards.
From there, I just dominate every duel following because my machines are getting RIDICULOUS power boosts.
I played this game so damn much. I still think about it from time to time. Used to collect the Alpha, Beta & Gamma that came with the game.
thi is my favorite game it needs a reboot so much
7:12 Windows 95 background? That's the Raildex wind turbines, albeit on PS1 graphics instead of PS3 graphics. If Sony wanted them to push the limits of the PS2's graphical capabilities, the animations did the job sure. The everything else about the graphics, not so much. Games like Final Fantasy X-XII, Dragon Quest VIII, Xenogears 3, the Jak & Daxter series, the Sly Cooper series, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Ico, God of War 2, Shadow Of The Colossus, etc etc etc did _way_ better of a job of showcasing what the PS2 was capable of.
Honestly if they would remaster the game and just give the “easy, hard, ultimate” or something I’d throw all my money to it 😂😂😂
Good video mate, never got to play this one but loved forbidden memories as a kid. Very entertaining.
Duelist of the Roses roguelite? Cue up the "Shut Up and Take My Money" Meme
Other than the ai being ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE it was fun. Swordstalker was OP
easy way to cheat the entire game:
1st: start on kaibas side.
2nd: grind against tristan and try to get him to use his fairy meteor to use it for reincarnation later.
3rd: after upgrading your deck a bit grind against mako untill you have 3 aqua dragon, 3 roaring ocean snake, 3 umi and 3 copies of all the water/aqua power up spells.
congrats you now have the strongest deck in the game.
If they remastered this game with more generations of yugioh, it makes me wonder what monsters they'd use as duelmasters? Would they have one for each deck series? Would they just have one for each attribute? Monster type? What will Pot of Greed do?
You can duel yourself for copies of your own cards in the free duel menu
“Extremely low replay value”
Me: *plays it till the PS3 came out”
I enjoy the forgotten kingdom myself. the game it wants save data from. it actually have the god cards as finall bosses. it's quite fun.
Such a cool concept, if they remade this game for ps5 with online pvp, I would loosevmy shit and I haven't played yu gi oh in 15 years
This used to be my favourite game on ps2!
My local retro game store has this game! Ill be getting it again!
wouldve been really cool if they had invested into this as a game mode in person. nowadays wed just do that online but i suppose thats just konami dropping the ball
Huh, I don't actually remember running into any of the issues you mentioned back in the day. I loved the fusion mechanic too, but I think i only spammed the few I knew via trial and error.
The need for a save of forbidden memories is because DotR is a sequal to it.
And it has Duel Master K in it too
God i loved this game as a kid so much
A more accurate description is. A mix of yugioh and dungeon dice.
Did u Play it emulated on PC? Mine doesent seem to work that well because i get graphic bugs😄
No I played it on ps2. It's why the graphics quality is kinda low.
@@MonkeyFightTCG oh okay thank you😄
Remember it was very difficult game and I was lucky and excited every time I won!
wow dude i dont whats wrong with you but your obviously supposed to cheese the game and make a waifu deck to stomp on everyone like the degenerates we are
What's wrong with kazejin's animation?
yea and this was how yugioh was first played if you ever read the manga pre duel monsters
Damnnn I never knew all this because I was too dumb to get past weville when I was a kid and I tried for hours. I always really wanted to like this game though because the gameplay looks so cool
This seems like a simplified dungeon dice monsters.
Just a bit of advise for the video, maybe some music in the background. Loved the vid tho!
Loved this game.
Anyone know how to get this for PC.
I have emulator and what not but not the actual game, no matter where i go I can't get it
i love this game me an my brother didn’t get too far but it was fun at the time 😊
17 mins of complaining lol. I fucking love this game. It was so much and totally different.
Luminous Soldier is BY FAR the worst starter deck. This game was so cool at the time. It's aged poorly sadly but still is such a cool one to come back to.
This game is badass
it took me so long to dark mangican
All I can say about this game. Fk riroku lol
