I had the privilege of having lunch with Charlie Duke in 1985. He graciously autographed a couple of books, answered some questions I asked and pised for a picture. It remains a treasured experience, one which I will always remember.
Ken Mattingly was bumped off Apollo 13 days before launch and this flight was delayed for a month. Poor guy probably spent the entire day just waiting for someone to say the launch has been cancelled.
You can tell a lot about Charlie Duke and John Young at 3:25 by how they take time to shake the hands of the cafeteria guy just a few hours before they get blasted to the moon.
Imagine being one of those guys, especially Charlie and TK making their first flight, marching to the Astrovan in spacesuit carrying the A/C, "Outta my way because I'm on the way to the Moon!"
+Brandon Bennetzen TK's first DOD mission was STS4. I read in John Young's book that after Apollo 16 Mattingly went straight into Shuttle (also Young obviously). I guess they had to start all over again to extensively work on another space vehicle given they didn't have much spare time working Apollo over the years.
Kinda wonder if it was a good idea to eat a big breakfast and drink a lot of coffee and juice right before you get into a bulky space suite and put into a tiny space capsule.
Why is there never any audio in the breakfast room or the suit up room for any Apollo flights? Did they just not have any mics there? I've watched these old videos for years and I've NEVER heard any audio from either room. Does anybody know why?

John Young was the ultimate Astronaut.
Young wasn't one of the original 7 but he was the 7th American in space. One cool customer.
John Young is such a boss. All these guys picked for the Apollo astronaut program were perfect.
2:20 when the citrus fruit hits and you're about to go 12 days without a toilet
I love the story that Charlie Duke tells that his heartbeat was 144 BMP at liftoff and John's was only 70!
That counts as pretty riled up for Young.
It probably does! Young is such a boss! He still is!
I know it was! 😂
In all fairness, this was Young's fourth space flight while it was Duke's first.
Jam Guy And Youngs SECOND trip to the moon....
John Young, Astronaut Royalty, yet so laid back and humble.

John Young,....modest,amazing...a real inspiration to me.
The lunch at the launch day.
boy it would be nice if this had sound
Would love to hear subject matter hours before liftoff
"Breeeath...Breath in the air.... don't be afraid to care...."
Great video.John Young,Charlie Duke and Tom Mattingly were perfect for Apollo 16.Thanks for the vid.
Everyone called Mattingly by his middle name, Ken.
Que maravilla ver estos videos, se les ve tan tranquilos, como si fueran a la oficina a trabajar y sin embargo van a la Luna.

Nothing about Apollo isn't fabulous and fascinating.
I mean, it's not exactly fabulous they didn't have a toilet on board.
Ken Mattingly and Charlie Duke made General. John Young made NASA his lifelong career and ran the astronaut office for many years..
Amazing takes three guys to close the hatch
At 19:04: The legendary german Pad Leader Günter Wendt, better known as "Pad Fuhrer". :)
Im always amazed, like lets have some coffee and go to the moon !
John Young at breakfast already appeared focused on the mission steps ahead...
Bons tempos.
Uma saga de heróis.
2:17 zoning out LOL
John Young, Stuart Roosa, the back up CM pilot, Ed Mitchell the back up LM pilot, and Deke Slayton, all dead now.
At 13:54 , John Young looked at Charlie Duke so deep. He could be said: "Hopefully this bunch of rookies wouldn't screw my flight"...
I would say that was the last thing on his mind lol. All three were very competent.
RIP John Young

Steak and eggs, high protein and low residue.
1jeffr From the time they ate to liftoff was 4-5 hours, so their food had plenty of time to digest.
Great, Now It Looks Like Apollo 20.
