Question: in the US, we enjoy hot items (hot chocolate, coffee, tea, cinnamon rolls) and “cold” decorations (icicles, frosted tips, snow) for Christmas because it is cold here. What are typical Aussie foods and decorations around Christmas?
For the decorations, it is usually pretty similar to the US as they are mostly all made overseas, but we also have some more “beach” type decorations like driftwood xmas trees. For the food it is more cold meats, seafood and things like coleslaw and potato salads. Desserts are pavlova, meringues, trifle, cold cream desserts.
Christmas trees do not take decades to grow. Check out all the articles that say real Christmas trees are actually good for the environment. They are typically grown on farms where they re-plant.
I love real Christmas trees but I personally can't justify chopping down a tree to just use for a month. But no judgement if you like real ones because they are rlly great!
I've been reusing my fake one for 8 years now. And when its time comes, I'll defenitely go rent a real, pot one from my local florist. When reused for so long, also fake trees can be a sustainable option instead of throwing away 8 real trees in the same timespan.
Our Christmas trees are specifically grown on a farm just for Christmas. They don’t just grow wild in the aussie bush land. Soo.... they’re actually natural and can be used as fire wood after. So. Yeah. Pretty reusable and eco friendly here.
They definitely can be! But most fake ones need to be reused for 11+ years to be as sustainable as real, and lots of people get caught up in consumerism and dont do that unfortunately.
@@jacquelinecoulter8218 yes! @@velyvely6479 hey. I think it just depends on the individuals here in America. I am personally one who is trying my best to take all the precautions necessary to decrease Covid spread. I know a quite a few people who aren't taking it seriously as I am, which is sad, but I am in not in a position to tell someone what to do, think, act, belief. I respect people's decisions but wish they would take it seriously. I lost 5 close people (family members and family friends since I was a child so pretty much family) before Covid and so my heart is out to everyone who has suffered any loss this year. Grief is not something I wish on anyone. A few people have told me "well if they're old they already had a good life" they don't think "young" or "healthy" can be affected. Infuriating. Which I know of people who have died from it. I guess from whom I've interacted personally, maybe 70% don't care or are in denial and 30% are doing the necessary precautions. But like I said I can't tell anyone what to do, say, belief, I just pray. Happy holidays and stay safe.
I've had real ones and fakes ones over the years and both have their pros and cons. Fakes are just easier for me and my lifestyle. You store it and reuse it over and over (yay!) and if you want the smell you add some scents with the scented sticks or some candles and ta-da! No watering and no fire hazards. I also have cats and they will eat anything green and it's not fun cleaning up vomit all the time. I'm outnumbered 3-1!
My husband was in the same boat as far as growing up ALWAYS having a real Christmas tree, and this year we got his first fake one. We just got a pine tree scented candle 😂
Faux Christmas trees are a lot more sustainable as you don't have to cut down a tree every year and you can reuse it. Not to mention, of course it's hard to find trees there in Australia.. they probably have to be shipped from far away hence making it even less sustainable.
I’m from Brazil and the pandemic is very hard on us. We use masks all the time. Social distancing is highly recommended. The people who are concerned really dont get together if they don’t live with you... it’s so weird seeying Australia so relaxed, from what we perceive here... you are so lucky! Here it’s a mess! I love watching your stories because everything looks so much more normal in Australia compared to what we’re going through in California 😭 merry Christmas to you and your family!
I fully hear you about real Christmas trees ~ they’re so beautiful snd the smell is so nostalgic. over the years of becoming more eco however, it’s definitely a more sustainable option to have a fake tree. maybe if you do end up getting a fake one, invest in one you like and then maybe if you still feel you need a real one, there’s been some options in the UK to rent a tree every ye at ~ the same tree. every year it gets planted into a farm and then after about 7 years it retires and you can move onto a new one☺️happy Christmas you guys! X
I first thought so too, but after some research I found its actually less sustainable to have a plastic one www.nature.org/en-us/what-we-do/our-priorities/protect-water-and-land/land-and-water-stories/real-vs-fake-christmas-tree/#:~:text=First%20off%2C%20real%20trees%20don,%2C%20you're%20supporting%20forests.&text=Meanwhile%2C%20artificial%20trees%20are%20usually,end%20up%20filling%20our%20landfills.

This isn't hate, I love your videos! it was just a little difficult to watch this one because in the UK, and in many other European countries, we aren't even able to see our family over Christmas (for example I'm missing my nephew's first Christmas) with some people spending it alone :( I completely understand that this is a jokey video and usually I would laugh along, but I think, in these current circumstances, where people are feeling really low and upset at the situation, it would have gone a million miles for you to mention in the video that you are aware that not everyone will be able to have the Christmas they were looking forward to this year. I am sure you may have not been aware, so please don't take this in the wrong way. This brings up all the feels! We had real christmas trees for years and then suddenly I became allergic to the pine, so sadly we have a fake tree these days. But the smell of a real one is life! So many memories!
Real Christmas trees are the best. The tree makes the house smells so good! For next year you can go to a Christmas tree farm and they let you tag one while it's still growing early. When I was little I kept the lower branches that were cut up in my room for my own little tree
My partner and I have a plastic Christmas tree that we reuse every year, and FUN FACT they have pine scented ornament sticks you hang in your tree and they hide behind the leaves and the whole house smells like pine so I know its not the same but it does exist! and we still have that pine smell in our house ready for the holidays 😊🎄
Can I just say THANK YOU for getting me in the Christmas spirit this year! I have been so bah humbug but watching you guys on a mission to find a real one and having the decorations out seriously made me so happy!
For next year if your suburban house sells out again: 2nd Sutherland Armco Scouts on Tathra place, sell trees for around 120 for big ones and they start selling at 6am on the first Saturday of December
Wait WHAT?? I'm from Oregon (major Xmas tree producers in the US) and I have N E V E R paid more than like $45 for a tree, and most often I pay like $25.....
In South Africa they sell sticks that you put into the plastic tree. They let off the real tree smell. I don't like Christmas or Christmas trees, but visitors seem to enjoy the smell.
I don’t know if you can get them in Australia , but I’ve seen people get hold of pine scented decorations that replace the ‘real Christmas tree smell’. Apparently only needs 1-2 because they are so strong!

Top tip from The Office for a fake Christmas tree that smells : hide a pine scented car freshener or two in it. 😘
Yes!! At least in my part of the world, everywhere they sell fake trees they always sell pine scented spray, or sprigs so you can still have that scent!
I wished I lived in Australia. In the UK we are only allowed to see people on Christmas Day and another lockdown is looming for 2021 🙃
@@lorelwebber6435 This is a very selfish comment. There are people losing their lives, and not just people with COVID if individuals continue to not consider and follow the guidance set out by the government, the NHS is also struggling to cope with treating other ailments due to the sheer amount of individuals with COVID in the hospitals. The people who consider that this is a “scam”, “conspiracy” etc are the ones essentially spreading and continuing the longevity of restrictions that are forcing our economy to crash, more individuals to contract COVID, subsequent to that hospitals becoming over-capacitated and struggling across the board. Take a step back please, and re-evaluate your perspective. Re-think your comment for all the individuals that have lost parents and grandparents due to this.

Pine trees take many decades to grow. I wish the tree trend would stop for good. But I understand the pleasure of having one. Have a lovely Xmas
For real though
Christmas trees do not take decades to grow. Check out all the articles that say real Christmas trees are actually good for the environment. They are typically grown on farms where they re-plant.
@@maegantucker6684 they do take:) Merry Xmas.
I love real Christmas trees but I personally can't justify chopping down a tree to just use for a month. But no judgement if you like real ones because they are rlly great!
Using real christmas trees is actually better for the environment than using fake ones.

Happy holidays and stay safe.

haha i live in austria and no one has a fake christmas tree. The christmas tree smell is just the best!!!!!
“We’re going for a pink/white/beige theme”
