Hi! Thank you for the soccer vocabulary, I love watching the soccer game. in the back of the net, crossbar, he skied it, he failed to convert, it hasn't been his night, his first appearance on the big stage, the commentator is calling the game, oh, it's gone in, the both teams keeped a clean sheet, last roll of the dice, back against the wall, gamble, 18-yard box, draw level = pull level = even the score, the team got this game in the bag, jump the gun, go-to man = the man who gets the goal, scuffles = pushing and shoving, couch potato, talking point, back and forth. stay safe and healthy too! Take care!
What you menthioned about "Spanish or Latin" soccer (football or futbol) commentators, is a part of the experiencie, we live every match as a party. And you will find MANY DIFFERENT WAYS a narrator refers to a goal. All them trying to set his own mark / stamp. Because, people, often wanted to listen a specific narrator. It started during 80s ....for example in Brazil, when a striker is closer to score, commentators uses a "pervios sentence" "Ripanayunipa", in Argentina "ta ta ta ta ....goal" (Victor Hugo Morales, the same guy who narrates de Mexico 86 goals during ARGENTINA Vs ENGLAND match). But there are many commentors, with many "lyrics" to describe a situation ... more passionated than UK. Example: (Walter Nelson) "Cocodrilo que se duerme es cartera" (A Crocodile who falls asleep becomes into a wallet). Just to describe a GoalKepper who didnt react, or a defense who didnt react, or, even if a team ties a match during last minutes. Or phrases such as "Did you bring the bullets today?" (at the beggining of a game) referring to a bullet for eveery possible goal. Then, if a game ended with many goals, he says "Partido liquidado" (Sent off game or Game Done, or Ended game) .... "No me quedan mas cartuchos"...(No more bullets left) to refer to a ended match. for example at 80 minutes in a 4-0 score match.

Loved this lesson, Mark. Tks so much. Not to toot my own horn, but I authored a bilingual glossary (English-Portuguese-English) of soccer terms in 2013 in Brazil. It has more than 800 entries. I did include some of the idioms you taught in this video. I should've included "to sky it" though. Maybe in a second edition. I've been somewhat away from soccer over the past few years, but I was once a big fan of the game and loved listening to and watching games and soccer talk shows in English -- that's how I collected a big chunk of the entries for my book. Keep bringing those soccer idioms on, buddy. Greatly appreciated.
Now we're talking Mark! 😉 I hardly ever watch football, but when the Euro or World cup starts I jump on the bandwagon. I still remember the World cup Final against Spain in 2010. Those were the days! ⚽😎 In order to win and beat the top teams they have to go for it. It's not in the bag yet. There's still a long way to go.
