    Nature's first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf's a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day,
    Nothing gold can stay.
    The poem

They are talking about that when we are young, everything is new, we are innocent. When we get older we become disillusioned or jaded, each person experiences events that change how we once viewed life in our youth. You can let that make you bitter and angry, or you can find the good and see the beauty in this planet. See the good that is out there. My grandfather always believed in treating us like equals and not shaming people for being human, there is always that balance of sheltering kids and educating about real things going on around them. I always felt that the poorest people of all lived in the city, in concrete prisons. Where you don't get to experience nature.

I live in the suburbs, around nature, where I don't much experience people. Yet I'm also poor, and it's difficult to have and maintain relationships when you're poor. Of course, some think the poor have it easy. I would beg to differ, with the stress of living on low-income and few, if any, vacations.

This movie is a true classic. the story of young men struggling to survive even in small town America. A story about family, camaraderie, loyalty, love the consequences of a single bad decision. This movie is as relevant now as it was then kids making hard choices that shape them into men.

Seeing this scene makes me understand Johnny's letter in the final sequence. I think Ponyboy reciting this poem informs us that maybe he at least had a chance to live the life Johnny never could. Johnny and Dally had good hearts but they were born into situations already shortchanged by the cards dealt to them. The gold does represent innocence put it also represents " pure love." Johnny doesn't want Ponyboy to become cynical like Dally but to always have an open heart. We see this when they go to save the children in the fire. Pure Love- "Gold" means being selfless. It means sacrifice. It also means wanting for others to have a better life than you.

In the end, Pony Boy is the stronger one because it takes more strength to hold onto Hope than to be consumed by the world. Dallas lost hope and allowed the world to take the best of him. This scene makes me so happy and sad at the same time because it reminds me of my grandfather, I miss him puts a tear in my eye but I was happy to have the memories and bonds that we had together as grandfather and grandson he was the sweetest man I ever known in my life, but had a greatness to him that I will miss, but I know I will always have the fond memories, that I’ll always cherish to this day. He was my best pal in life, my first best friend, I just never knew how hard it would be when someone passes on into the other realm or heaven or universe, he’ll always remind me of my grandfather, I will miss till the day I pass on as well until then I will keep on living. But I directed a photo that had this color tone in the film and this is something I wrote for my grandpa at his ceremony.
This picture reminds me of someone I used to know my grandfather I dedicate this picture that leaves a memory but I know he’s there but as Ponyboy said in the outsiders “Nothing Gold Can Stay” My grandfather was one of those exceptional people where words can’t describe but I express in the words I have to say that he had a heart of gold in my eyes I still see him still time after time still I miss him a lot it’s been 4 months I thought things would get easier but sadly not always but I think the reason why is because he’s f the amount time I spent with him it’s so hard to have to be here still without him, I will always miss him with all my heart sorrow is sorrow but as I watched The Outsiders film one night I started sobbing in tears of how hard it is with my grandfather Chuck not being around anymore and I never knew that listening to the main song of the movie would hit me that hard and it did right in there in the heart then started sobbing because it reminded me of “So Gold” By Stevie Wonder but then the other thing that reminded me of my grandfather where the stories and things he did when he was younger and when he was much older, but in his later years he had reminded me of some of traits that PonyBoy has in the film such as: reading book, and liking movies. And to add one last thing the term Nothing Gold Can Stay means:
“You’re gold when you're a kid, Like green. When you’re a kid everything is new, dawn. Like the way you dig movies and reading books Chuck, that’s gold. Keep it that way, it's a good way to be.”
But I know that he is here in spirit as I do believe that he would be hearing me saying this right now. But I am glad I had as much time as I did in his last remaining yrs before he passed away, I love you grandpa may you rest in peace and will love you always, and forever.

I did a project for this scene in middle school. I remember remaking the scene in a shoebox, using the best of my abilities to make it at least half as beautiful as the sunset in the movie.

A very special time in the movie. A movie that moves you because of what ignorance does to people. We are all equal and deserving of respect. Maybe an idealistic notion and possibly one never attained. Yet, nevertheless worthy.

Here's something interesting. My great-grandmother (my dad's maternal grandmother) led everyone on that side of the family to believe that Stephen Foster (a composer of songs like "Camptown Races" and "Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair") was an ancestor of the family, then a few years ago (a little over 30 years after my great-grandmother's death), my dad did his own research and found out Stephen Foster was never an ancestor of our family, but Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost are distant cousins, which is probably I like writing stories so much.

Seeing this scene 30 years later, i am shook. Just realized this scene with its rich saturation and the profile shots of the two characters with dramatic sky is a nod to scenes from Gone With The Wind with Scarlet and Pa against Tara. And these boys loved GWTW. This movie is a very very loving faithful adaption of the novel. Beautiful beautiful movie!
