Fiat Supporters: Paper money is better because it's easier to spend and is very liquid.
Gold Standard Supporters: Gold is better because it holds value.
Goldback: Why don't we just print money made of gold?
Fiat and Gold Standard Supporters: Genius.
This video hit home for me because I'm preparing to invest in crypto and precious metals. I'll seriously consider buying these Goldbacks if possible. It'll look nice next to some coins and bullion anyway. Thanks for the video!

No, the Constitution is quite clear on the point "No State shall ~ coin Money". Where it states "make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender", it is referring to state's legislators authority to "make by law". So, what the states can do is make by law gold and silver coin a legal tender (without specifying US minted) and because congress has set president by establishing printing notes as being the same as coining money, they can allow a bank or a trust to print and issue gold and silver notes with a marked value and issue them for circulation as money. (That's how states got around the money proabition during the "free banking era".) The reason why the founders took the power to coin or print money from the states is because they didn't want competing currencys and back in those days, issuing money was the privlage of sovereign countries. What was one of the first acts of the confederate states when they broke from the Union? They printed their own money. In fact, they violated every prohabition in Article 1 section 10. Money is sovereignty for a nation as well as the individual.

Today a one dollar goldback sells on the market for USD $5.14, while 1/1000th of an ounce of gold without the plastic, sells for USD $1.78. Any “goldback” designed to skim a 70% profit off the rubes is a deal-killer for me. Alright! Someone actually bringing up Article I, Sec 10... mandating "hard" or "sound" money. With all the problems in our economy today, I say that the debasement of our money (since 1913) is our biggest problem that underlies almost all of our economic issues. The Government has been raising the taxes by increase of your tax brackets as the CPI increases, not to mention the inflation tax in general and now with zero interest rates ripping off all the savers. The ability for the FED to create money for free and fund all the government programs has led to the government taking charge over everything and ruining the republic (for which we stand).

Ok. Let's imagine that you think the US dollar is going to collapse Weimar Republic style and you're going to protect yourself by replacing your dollars with the gold notes. First of all you are going to need your own vault to store them all. Second of all, the world economy will have collapsed so your gold cash won't be able to buy what it did before. The people who survived hyperinflation were the ones holding real estate or durable goods.
Finally - You correctly point out that fiat money like dollars only has value because we all think it has value. Gold is no different. You can't eat gold. It's heavy and soft so it's useless for making tools. The difference between gold and paper is that the delusion of gold's value is older. In a post apocalyptic world after civilization collapses, your hoard of gold will be of no more use to you than my stack of $100 dollar bills. At least mine can be used as fire kindling.
