Never thought I'd see Dave pull the trigger on a Jake. But it happens to everyone I think it's happened to me. I'm glad you still uploaded and didn't shy it away from viewers
It’s ok Dave. You had a lot on your mind at the time! And I definitely know how ya felt! Cold sweat and deer in the headlights and all. Another awesome hunt! Be safe y’all.
As soon as he strutted out and I didn’t see a beard I looked at his wing patch and said Jake. Still an exciting hunt. Love them mountain turkeys. Congratulations
I have shot jakes thinking they were longbeards. On road trips, I have shot jakes that I knew were jakes. And I almost let a longbeard with beard rot go until I saw his fan. But I have come to the conclusion that I am thankful for every one of them I am blessed enough to have stand in front of me. Congratulations on a great hunt, and thank you for sharing it.
It happens to the best of us. Still good eating, and fun. Nothing wrong with it. My first was a long beard. My second was a Jake. My 210th was a Jake. It happens. All part of it all. Set back and smoke one over him and enjoy each other and have fun.
My Rio I shot in Kansas as well was a super Jake. Responding with full gobbles, coming in full strut with a full fan. Then when I layed hands on em he had just a 4in beard and half inch spurs.
Great hunt! A gobbler is a gobbler! If the state you are hunting in deems shooting Jakes legal, then it is fine. Yes, we all want to shoot longbeards, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way. For all of the new hunters watching, for them, please don't down play the importance of putting a tag on a bird. Dave, looking forward to the next hunt! Thanks for sharing.
That joker was gobbling. I mean let's face it I don't k ow who would t have shot it. Even though I'm sure there are some RUclips professional bandits out there that would never shoot a jake. Don't stress it brother.
Happened to myself 3 years ago now had 3 birds gobbling there heads off 2 running in hammering to every call I through set down in safe brush and bam there they were popped out wood line running up on me fast as they could and they were on me 7 yards shot and ran up telling buddy shot the beard off ! To realize it was a Jake that was strutting and gobblin his head off and still had a long beard gobblin in distance great hunt but very much hated I shot him
Dave really enjoy your videos especially the ones in Washington. I’m moving there this summer from SC. Really be great to know what kinda boots you run up in those mountains chasing turkeys
I've done Nebraska and South Dakota. Those were some challenging birds to kill. And I'm doing Colorado and hopefully Wyoming here in May. But after scouring the maps looking for where I'm going in Wyoming and seeing what Idaho looks like, and from these couple videos of ya'll in Idaho, and the fact that Idaho seems like it'd be a very overlooked and under pressured state, I seriously can't wait for the year I decide to head there. Looks like they'll be much easier Merriams to kill than the other ones I've been after and still in some gorgeous country. Just wondering if you didn't have another tag or something for that next gobbler in?
@@tayloreads2004 well hopefully you'll miss me and I'll be off to Wyoming. If so, I'll get ahold of ya and give you whatever Intel I got for ya on the area. If I'm still there struggling, I'll be in an olive green wrangler so stop and say hi if ya see me.
Shooting a Jake is the equivalent of shooting a button head buck. It should be illegal unless it’s a youth hunter imo. I killed one on accident one time and felt sick about it. It’s killing what could have been a trophy breeding gobbler and robbing it of a chance to pass on its genetics. But to each their own.
@@-B_G- I grew up on a farm in Central Missouri. There were no deer or turkeys in our county. I saw deer become plentiful. Turkeys were introduced and seasons opened. Any deer or turkey was a trophy. Yes even Jake's and button bucks. I hunt for big gobblers now. Deer I take my limit of does, bucks have to have 4pts on a side to be legal. I'm not a trophy hunter but a meat hunter. Sounds like your a trophy hunter, but to each their own. I won't dislike your Ford just because I like Chevys.
It happens Dave..when I saw him come past that stump, I thought “it’s a damn jake”. But I had a view that you didn’t. Great hunt!
Jake or not it's still one of my Favorite videos you've done lol
Thank you for sharing Idaho Turkey woods with us. Good stuff.

I’ve been turkey hunting for 40 years and have shot a couple like that. Not meaning to at all. Great video as always Dave!

Super jake, I've done the same thing a few times. Definitely looked like a tom when he strutted out.
“If he gobbles like the man I’ll shoot him like the man”
It’ll still make a real good pot pie👍
So would a 30$ butterball

That long beard was a stud
Awesome job guys out of all your hunts I enjoyed this as much as any of them. Shows the real deal hunt good job capturing real turkey hunting.
I wondered when he stepped out and zero beard.
It can happen to anyone that hunts them enough, sooner or later you’ll run into one that can fool even the best of us.
Great hunt Dave .It happens to everyone sooner or later. My Pappy once told me
Never say Never because Never is a really long time.
Real as it gets…the accidental Jake…
My Rio I shot in Kansas as well was a super Jake. Responding with full gobbles, coming in full strut with a full fan. Then when I layed hands on em he had just a 4in beard and half inch spurs.
There will always be firsts if you hunt them long enough. Last year I called in a hen that gobbled! Completely caught us off guard!
Yea you got all binded up eating that pizza buffet Lol. Love it Great vid Awsome hunt!!!
That bird that walked up on y’all had some pretty nice spurs on him lol
Hey I’m saying an oh boy s##t can cloud anyone’s judgement lol. Still a beautiful bird hopefully I can get my first Merriam this season.
Awesome hunt , no matter what the bird is , keep em coming !!!

I shot a Jake after watching it strut full fan next year. It got me good.
It's called buck fever, we all get it

I would rate Montana far above Idaho for opportunities and number of birds. Plus is about ten hours closer to where we come from.
I’ll be in pagosa spring CO in may. Hbu?
@@tayloreads2004 lol Pagosa Springs may 1st - 18th.

Shit happens, great hunt tho, ole Dave wasn't getting left out of the action again!!!!!
Jjust proves that pressing paperwork really does cloud the brain. Great hunt still the same.
I was wondering about that. Just before you shot I asked myself where the beard was. Figured I just missed it !! Oh well, it happens
When you shot I knew I didn’t see a beard on him but hey you killed him. Had a good hunt anyway. And it will eat good. Congrats
Hahaha , you were Super Jaked ! It happens brother , when you act like a man and talk like a man ..............
First
I've taken plenty of jakes in my life on purpose and proud of every one!

Idaho turkeys are just about tame lol 😂 very few people hunt them in Idaho. In other words they are not really a challenge to kill.
