How a touring actor packs for a year on the road

The national tour of “Hello, Dolly!” rolled into the Kennedy Center early this month and will stay in Washington through July 7. Along with the sets, props and costumes, the production transports one trunk for each touring cast member. “Hello, Dolly!” is the first tour for Morgan Kirner, who plays Ermengarde. Along with the trunk, she can take two full-size pieces of luggage, a carry-on bag and a personal item. The problem Kirner faces is deciding what to bring and how to fit in purchases from stops along the way. She has her hobbies covered - a show-themed scrapbook, running gear and the makings of a fledgling card business - all stowed away in her trunk, which can weigh up to 100 pounds. Kirner also packed protein powder and flaxseeds for smoothies, a small blender and a microwavable ceramic egg cooker. The national tour of “Hello, Dolly!” started in Cleveland in September and has been moving from city to city, stopping for five days to five weeks at a time. Kirner is only performing the role of Ermengarde for a year, but the show will continue traveling without her through May of 2020. Kirner has found that the items she keeps with her, particularly scented candles, help establish a feeling of home. But the main thing keeping her grounded, even when the show keeps moving, is the sense of family from the cast and crew.
