    I think the size of our country is a surprise to some Germans, but I think it is a matter of scale. Germany is a country of ~81.2 million people is a land the size of one of our larger states (about Texas I think). USA has ~320 million people but very spread out. I hosted exchange students in Florida on year and they asked if they could visit the Grand Canyon one weekend. I had to get out a map and show them how that was literally not possible. That being said, public transport (trains buses etc) works very well in Germany, but not so much here. I agree about our "disposable" lifestyle. Trust me, there are many many of us who work very hard to change that, but there are an equal number of people who value convenience over the future waste problems.

      My German Professor would actually always compare Germany to the size of Montana. But I totally agree-I feel like a lot of people in Europe don't realize how big states actually are because going from state to state is almost like going from country to country in Europe...

      Dave M, the waste problem is about to be greatly reduced in California. We just now banned plastic bags in a lot of stores and supermarkets so that's a lot less plastic being used.

    Area around Monument Valley are part of Navajo Nation. In general, reservations have poor cell coverage, but getting much better lately. I live in Hawai’i now but when I was on the mainland I always tried to have Verizon as they have best coverage in tribal SW areas. Beautiful land though. Miss those open spaces where you can totally disconnect. Y’all should do a repeat tour!

    Doch! Was soll das! Amerika IST tatsächlich ein Kontinent! Man muss es aber richtig vergehen. Das, was ihr die ganze Zeit als "Amerika" nennt ist nicht wirklich Amerika. Amerika ist ein Kontinent, man kann ihn aber teilen, es aus Nordamerika, Mittelamerika und Südamerika. Das USA hat eigentlich keinen richtigen Name und das macht die Sache etwas verwirrend.
    Natürlich sage ich das offensichtliche, aber man muss es immer wieder erinnern. Ich komme aus Chile, das heisst, ich komme auch aus Amerika. :) Viel Spass euch!

      Os Rub North America is a continent, South America is a different continent, Central America is a region of the North American continent, and America is the shortened version of the name United States of America. It's perfectly appropriate to call the USA "America" just like it's appropriate to call The Federal Republic of Germany simply "Germany". You couldn't call a Mexican an American just because they live in North America, instead they live in Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or literally, The Mexican United States.

    • @EasyGerman
      @EasyGerman  7 лет назад

      +Os Rub Im Deutschen nennen wir das Land USA aber auch Amerika und meinen dann nur die USA ;)

    • @1226nacho
      @1226nacho 7 лет назад +2

      Das denke ich auch Os Rub. Amerika ist ein Kontinent, der alle Länder von Kanada bis Chile umfasst. The way I see it, It doesn't actually take much to realize that the US is part of it. It's in its name per se.

    • @fremejoker
      @fremejoker 7 лет назад +3

      Wenn man in der deutschen Sprache mit _Amerika_ die USA meint, heißt das nicht automatisch, dass Deutsche denken, dass die USA über ganz Amerika (Kontinent) verbreitet sind und Chile, Peru, Mexiko nicht auf dem amerikanische Kontinent lägen. Sprecher einer jeden Sprache mögen es sicherlich nicht jedes Mal _die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika_ zu sagen, weshalb sie es zu _Amerika_ (Land) verkürzen. Jeder Deutsche, der Geographie im Unterricht hatte, weiß, dass Chilenen auch im weiten Sinne Amerikaner sind, genauer Südamerikaner.

    Cari hat Recht auf den Plastikmüll in den USA. Ich komme aus Los Angeles aber wohne jetzt in München, und ich finde, dass es in Deutschland weniger Plastikmüll gibt. Zum Beispiel in Deutschland gibt es selten "take-outs", wo die Leute das Essen oder Leftover aus Restaurants in Kunststoff-Container zu Hause bringen. In Deutschland gibt es noch weniger Plastikbesteck und Plastiktüte. Aber jetzt in Amerika, mehrer Supermarkt berechnen eine Gebühr für Plastiktüte. Hoffentlich können wir als Amerikaner nachhaltiger werden :)

    Multi-part comment!
    - Cari's criticisms were very astute. There is a ton of senseless plastic waste in this country. Also unfortunately for our love
    of the automobile many city plans are victims of urban sprawl. Urban planning is now trying to right those wrongs
    although often times voters will not support decent public transportation. They'd rather rot in traffic. We could learn a lot
    from Germany.
    - Africa is much much larger than the U.S. Not even most people here realize that because many maps are skewed toward
    the poles.
    - Why on earth would we export 'Full House' of all TV shows? That just seems absurd. (yes...I admit I watched the show)
    - I was curious if the Donald Trump star on the 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' was repaired or blocked off with crime scene
    tape?
    - Just wanted to say I really enjoyed this series. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. It's a shame you didn't get a
    chance to experience our shitty weather up here in the Pacific Northwest and opted for palm trees and amazing views
    instead. Maybe next time... ;)

That said, I'm surprised that you guys thought Vegas was bigger than what you thought it was. The only reason I say that is I drove cross country for 20 years in the moving business (6 with Mayflower and 14 with Atlas) and I had the same idealized vision of Vegas as you guys did about the US. However, I was the opposite. I thought it was much smaller than what it actually was. Anyhoo, it's a pleasure getting to know you guys, and Janusz...keep rockin that six string :-)

    You are correct in that a lot of foreign visitors are surprised by how large the USA is and how large some states are. There are approximately 40 million people in the entire country of Canada. That is also the approximate population of the state of California. To drive from the southern border of California to its northern border by car on the freeways will take you approximately 20 hours, stopping for fuel.
    California set an all time record for the hottest temperature on earth in 2022, 137 degrees fahrenheit at Furnace Creek in the Mohave desert California. In fact, California is most likely on any given day to have the largest difference in temperature within eyesight of each other on any given day. That would be mount Whitney at 14,505 feet above sea level and Bad Water (in the Mojave desert) at -266 feet below sea level.

    Network coverage? USA is 28 times the size of Germany. We have uninhabited wildernesses the size of Germany. We have Western states where, several combined would be the size of Europe with the population of less than Hamburg. If you had no service in any reasonably populated area, it's a problem with your connection. I really, really like your channel. It may not sound like it from my remarks, but, I do. I'm waiting for you to visit a more rural area. Your trip to the Southwest was a stop at Horseshoe, then Vegas, then California cities. If you want to get away from the things you find as distractions: pollution, crowding, homelessness, etc. Try visiting some of the other 99%. The urban areas of our country account for less than 2% compared to Germany's almost 75%. For those of us who live in the 99% here, we don't find our cities to be representative of our nation. Our two populated coasts are a planet away from the rest of our country. So is Chicago.

      This comparison of size between USA and European countries is jingoistic and typical, unfortunately, of a certain class of unsophisticated American that some Europeans find obnoxious. It's rural and disrespectful, in additional to tactless.

    Amerika ist nicht nur ein Land, sondern ein Kontinent. USA is ein Land.

    (You can for 2 Germanies into Texas... Illinois is larger than England. But size isn't the issue really, culturally there is no one USA).

    Loved this episode! I laughed when I read the translation at 2:30 as "that's not on" for "das geht doch nicht" in reference to having no network coverage. I come from a British American family and that is definitely a British English phrase, not American and made me laugh because I haven't heard it in quite a while! Also, as someone from the SF Bay Area, I was very sad to hear you didn't find any good coffee. Starbucks is NOT the best coffee in the Bay Area! There are so many great local coffee roasters and cafes there, I'm afraid you must not have had the right local to guide you!

    Sorry I missed you folks on the trip. I think you would get many more people (after Covid) if you retraveled the USA. I am in California, but you should travel through the old South and visit Charleston, SC; Nashville and Memphis TN; New Orleans, LA: Austin and Dallas TX; Louisville KY; St Louis, MO: North Florida; etc. A lot of the creative spice that defines America came from that region, things like , The Blues, Jazz, Country and Gospel music. A lot of writers, Hemingway, Mark Twain, Frederick Douglas, Thomas Dixon etc. give us a more nuianced picture that you can find in today's polemic.

    You should have planned a bit and gone from Chicago (where u should have spent three days) across the Prairie to Iowa and attend at least one state fair... I'm an American and the LAST place I'd ever want to go would be Las Vegas. The second last place I'd go, equally poor reflection of the US, would be LA.
