For fine adjustments at the end, you may want to let it run a full day to see your results at each gain change.
If you find that the best gain appears to be between 49.6 and -10 (59), after testing both for a day, go with the one that produces more positional messages per second. If you have a lot of near overhead traffic, the 49.6 is probably better but if most of the air traffic highways are 25+ miles out, -10 might be the better option. Just ensure that your hot messages on the top chart don't go above 10%. This (49.6 vs -10 choice) can happen with some hardware combinations.

Only if you are going from -10 to 49.6, as that is about 10 gain. If you look on the FAQ page as mentioned, you will see the steps. The differences in value from one step to the next decreases the lower you go.
