    Have replaced 4 Opti sparks so far. First one was the original and it was a water issue. Would die whenever it hit even the smallest puddle. Replacement worked for a few days them would shut down on the freeway. All power would go out. Then wait 10 to 20 min and power comes back and drives normal. Third opti would run for exactly 12 minutes then shout off all power, ten to twenty minuets and would start again. The fourth one I used one of the new bodies i have and put the module out of the first Opti into it, (it was a GM module). This worked for the last two years. I also taped the breather ports on bottom and fitted brass fittings in them, two to the intake air and one to a vent. I also tapped the water pump relief hole and installed a fitting with a tube directing water off the Opti. This has worked well, no more problems till a week ago, but it's not the Opti.

    I have a 94 Trans Am i bought new. It has 324.000 miles on it. Southern California car. Ive replaced the opti spark twice. The engine has never been touched, even the timing chain is original. It uses no oil, it has had lifelong 3000 mile oil changes, Castrol GTX 10 30. It still runs and sounds like new. Just had it smog tested 2 days ago, passed fine. Despite the miles, it still looks nearly new in and out. The original automatic transmission started slipping around 150.000 miles, I had a factory remanufactured unit installed, its still shifting perfectly. Everything else about the car has been great, one fuel pump replacement, 1 radiator replacement about 7 years ago. Biggest issue has been the power window motors, have them replaced 4 times! Computer, and all sensors are original, no problems with any of that. Ive had 3 new cars since i bought it, but I'll never let it go, i still enjoy driving it. Its the Dark green color, with charcoal leather interior. Good luck guys with your cars, and enjoy them.

    Test drove a '94 Corvette yesterday. It has less than 50K on the odo, has been garaged all its life, and, honestly, everything on it looks practically brand new -- as nice a stock C4 as you could ever find. I was about ready to make an offer, then I drove it.
    It started up fine, sounded great, then ran like it was missing two cylinders and was nursing a bad hangover. It absolutely broke my heart. I'm hoping the owner can get this resolved because I'd still like to own the car, but damn ...

    I'm almost certain I have a faulty optispark, but a local mechanic didn't diagnose anything wrong with my 96 Camaro when I took it in - twice! And that was supposed to be a 5-star shop. Your description of the problems was pretty much spot on.

    I sincerely hope you changed the water pump at the same time. Water pump failure is the #1 reason for opti Failures since it can dump both coolant and oil on the unit.

Fitted one of them and keeping the other as a spare. . .Hey presto, my under load miss-fire is gone . Job done...... I opened up the dodgy opti and found that one of the screws holding the rotor arm in place had fallen out and was just rattling around inside. Why was that causing such a huge miss and total loss of power????? Weird.

    If it's running hot and there's heating/cooling issues sounds like you have a bad water pump also,which is most likely what ruined the optispark. It sits right under the water pump. Yeah it sucks. I would replace both to save $,time and future aggravation.

  • @8bert9
    @8bert9 9 лет назад

    I had a 94 Z28 and when the optispark started acting up like you describe it wasn't but a few weeks at the most before the engine would not start at all. I went and bought a new optispark, installed it myself, a pain because you have to remove radiator, and pull the harmonic balancer off just to get to the opti. But, I put a new one in, put it back together and she fired right up.

    • @24MartinONDS
      @24MartinONDS 9 лет назад

      +8bert9 Why would you take out the radiator? It's actually not that bad to change. I hope you used an MSD opti...

    • @8bert9
      @8bert9 9 лет назад

      +24MartinONDS This was back in 2004. I did not even know MSD made an opti then or if they did then. After I posted I remembered that I had to just pull one or both fan shrouds and not the radiator.I can't remember if the fan shroud with the 2 fans was one unit or not but I had to get it out of the way. I had a long 3 leg grab puller that grabbed from the backside of the harmonic balancer and could not get a socket or wrench around it to pull off the harmonic balancer. So I had to make room.
      I lived out in the country so once I got started and realized that I needed a different puller in was too late so I just improvised. I sold that car in 2006. It was still running strong. I actually bought the opti from Oreilly auto parts, and bought the water pump from Advanced Auto. I went ahead and replaced it too. It was running just fine when I sold it.
      There was no youtube in 2004 so I used a Fbody web forum and someone had a Shoebox site that listed various repairs to Camaros. Do you know about this guy and his shoebox site? Then I permanently fixed the opti issue by buying a 2006 LS2 GTO, lol.

    • @24MartinONDS
      @24MartinONDS 9 лет назад +2

      +8bert9 thanks for your answer. I just changed my whole ignition system on my 94 trans am. Video is in my channel.
      I just took out one fan.
      I do not know about this guy or his site. I own both original GM repair Manuals for 1994 Trans Am/ Camaro.

    • @8bert9
      @8bert9 9 лет назад

      +24MartinONDS When you say that you changed your whole ignition system, did you stick with the optispark design or did you do an optispark delete. I have read a little about some people doing that. The whole reason I was looking at the opti issue lately is I wanted to refresh my memory on that issue, especially on the 94 LT1. I found a Black 94 Z28 6 speed 2 weeks ago. It was 1 owner, 80,000 miles and the owner bought it brand new in May 94. He was in his early 50's when he bought it and he took emaculant care of the car. It looks brand new. He got where he was having trouble getting in and out of it and he only used it in the summer anyway. I could not resist it and picked it up for $3000 dollars. It is a perfect example of the way a stock 94 Z28 was and the interior is perfect as well as everything else but I wanted to see what youtube had on the infamous opti, lol. I found the link to that guys site. It was called shoebox but now they changed it to shbox. Here is the link.....shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech1.html

    • @24MartinONDS
      @24MartinONDS 9 лет назад +1

      8bert9 Hello, No I did not delete the Opti. I Used a ignition system by MSD . The opti is made out of billet aluminum instead of plastic, and ist vented. (So were the oem Optis from 95 to 98.)
      The best thing would be a coil conversion, but I couldn't find the right parts here. You'll need a special module and the coils of an LS1 aswell.
      But the MSD opti runs great.

    My 94 has been pretty cranky lately (limped it from Kingman to Tucson with my grandbaby in the car).
    Stalling out last year for no reason (new ICM, fuel pressure regualto and fuel pump). Ran great for a while (a little rough idle), then stalled with no restart while on a roadtrip. Troubleshooting found it to be a bad ignition key (security chip was worn). Again ran good for months. Now it stalls when it gets warm. Codes say Code 16. After watching this video, I think this may ony be part of the problem, since she is not showing all the symptoms, but some of them (lack of power at highway speed, odd smell, poor fuel consumption).
    I am hoping replacing the opti and ICM with MSD kit will fix the problem.

    I actually have a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am, and lately I've been having startup issues. Sometimes it'll take up to three tries for the car to start up. After it warms up and I use it for a while. I'll come back to start the car again and the idle jumps really high or goes really low. but within a matter of seconds it evens out. So I'm not sure if that's because the ot spark or something else is the issue.
