I'd say trying Vinnie Desharnais out on the top line with Hughes is at least worth a look in the preseason to see how to goes. If it works, would be a great way to spread the puck movement defensemen across more of the lineup, and at the same time move the aging Myers down to the 3rd pairing with Forbort, which also kind of makes sense, so we can take advantage of the veteran's size and experience, while not having his age and possible stamina issues being a liability from him purely making fatigue errors from being on the ice too much.
Could also be an occasional pairing where you rotate him up there periodically when resting Myers and getting someone like Juulson some reps, as well, and if Vinnie can get the stamina to go on a high minutes top line regularly by the season after, maybe? You never know until you try. Maybe Tocchett sees a "Vennie Desharnais doesn't know how good Vinnie Desharnais is" kind of thing?
Hronek , Soucy would be a pretty good pairing.
Super excited for this season, love the additions, excited to see how the season turns out
Quinn Hughes can play with anyone and be well protected with Desharnais from physical abuse at the same time. Canuck management is smart . This is not the Benning era. This management team reminds me of Pat Quinn and Brian Burke and coach Mark Crawford. Crawford always coached outside the box.......He just lost his career because Crawford was a hot head. Crawford was an excellent coach however.
This possible lineup also gives the option to move the aging Tyler Myers down to the 3rd pairing where he doesn't need to see as much ice time, so he can be more effective when he is on the ice, and we can still benefit from his veteran blueliner experience. Also gives the option to do this when resting the aging Myers and giving a kid like Juulson some ice time, he can settle in on the 3rd line with Forbort, while Desharnais moves up to the first line and Hronek moves down to the Soucy line. Can also be an option for when, as you say, the other team's trying to take liberties on Hughes. Throw his Cousin Vinnie out there to give them the Mafia treatment. and whack 'em back in line. Definitely several good options this can open up, either as a permanent pairing, or situationally.
That's the whole idea Hughes will be a marked man. Just like he was in the playoffs. Vinny will look after him
I don’t like juulson bc of his big time hit that cost games. I’m if he fixes that during the season I’ll be rooting for him more but this last season he threw big games 1 in the playoffs and as demko went down when we were fight for the 1st in he league.
@@kylecabott1075 as an oilers fan, if you guys can pull the physical aspect out of Vinnie he'll be scary, unfortunately from what I've seen he's not much of a hitter
honestly, I feel like this can only work if Hronek plays well with Soucy. If he doesn’t, Foote will put him and Hughes back together
I second your thoughts on this.
Soucy and Hronek probably will play well together, it's an obvious move
their is no harm in trying it out.
I think the idea is worth trying at the very least. Hughes-Hronek was rather ineffective in the series against Edmonton, and even during the Nashville series, Hughes was pushed around and Hronek couldn't protect him (not sure why they didn't try to put Zadorov on for some shifts just to help Hughes get some space). We know what the Hughes-Hronek pairing can do, and actually know some of its limitations too, so giving a big body like Desharnais a chance to play with Hughes, and a chance for Hronek to drive his own pairing with Soucy, would give the Canucks more look. Drance did say that the Desharnais-Hughes pairing would be used "in spot duty" only, so I don't think Desharnais would be exposed.
It would be nice if this could actually work out because then it would take a lot of pressure off of Canucks management to make a trade for a top 4D man sooner rather than later. If they are not in a hurry to acquire someone via trade it guves them a better opportunity to just wait and watch and pull off a great trade when the time comes.
I was always on the split huggy/hronek train . I'd rather see mcward take the step and slot with Hughes......... But, Desharnais plays the right style to compliment
It’s funny I just mentioned this idea a day or two ago on Canucks unofficial forum. My reasoning came after watching an oilers fan make a video on Desjarnais. He said they tried him out with Nurse on the top line but it didn’t work out. Oilers fan was extremely impressed with his ability to learn considering how late of a bloomer he is. This could very well be a break out season for him. He plays a solid shut down D style of hockey. Quinn is not Nurse. He has better skating and offence. I think Quinn would benefit from a big body to clear the net and keep people honest.
Hughes Desjarnais
Soucy Hronek
Forbort Myers
Each line gets some offence and some shut down D ability. Each line has size
I like it. Hronek on the second pairing, sounds good to me.
At first I hated the idea but if the canucks are not going to trade for a top 4 dman, it doesn't sound like a bad idea. However, hronek has the learn how to carry a line by himself
Don't need 2 offensive d on the top line. Yes, Hronek is getting paid to be able to drive his own line. If Hronek does play up to his contract, Canucks would have 2 great D lines.
A couple of the guys on these comments dont know how Vinny plays. Yes he is 6'7 200 something but he does not play to use his size like that.
Bigger, dumber and slower than Myers
@@vdac1068 the dumber and slower yess... but bigger???? 🤣🤣🤣 lol whatever ur smoking hook me up bro!!! lol
im sure theyll try out a bunch of line combos and pairings. its the matter of how long will it actually last.
Would’ve been nice to keep Z to play that role since he’s less of a pylon movement wise than Vinny. But who knows maybe he’s working with Quinn’s mom on his power skating this summer.
He costs 4m more than Deharnais, so who are you cutting from the roster to keep Z?
Oilers fan here, VD is a big body and his skating is getting better but he does make noticeable mistakes defensively - maybe it's worth a try but it's really not the answer, he's strictly a top 6 D and no more.
I think it's a good idea actually. Hughes got pummeled in the playoffs he needs someone to help him out. If the Canucks are smart they'll get Hughes extended now instead of 3 years from now. It will be cheaper in the long run and Hughes loves it in Vancouver, he won't demand the maximum. I think 12 mill a year for 8 years will get it done. It has to be more than Petey's contract.
he can't sign an extension yet...
Lol. you can only re-sign a guy a year before his contract expires.
Why can't they draw up a contract now that comments' once his current contract has a year left? There would be no changes to his current contract until his extension kicks in a year before it's up.
@@MSmith-cp1tz what is the point of that? Things change in 2 years. That's literally just making work for the sake of making work. And it wouldn't even be binding.
We have also seen when soucy is out of the lineup we suck
Gonna miss vinny in edmonton!
Good job Vinny i am proud of you that you might play with Hughes thats amazing bug at the same time its i don't know Vinny is ready to play on top line yet i know he has crazy potential but thats potential he hasn't got it yet he's still working on it
I know the kid credits the original writers at the athletic, but this is a person on youtube reporting info he got from a website that got that info from another website... what are we even doing? Lolll
Vinny will hammer mcd and drais
Maybe need a tougher players besides Hughes
Love the video
You guys heard the one about Wayne Gretzky. He brought Jarri Kurri with him on his wedding night. He had to have someone to put it in for him. Ye old joke.
Funny one, given Wayne's 92 goals has never been touched and Brett, when he tried with his 86 goals, game up 6 goals short of a tie, 7 short of a record, declared the record impossible to beat.
What would really have been funny would have been a line of Kurri, Oates and Hull or something, with Kurri and Oates filling the playmaker roles, feeding Brett Kurried Oates for dinner! The puns would be raining endlessly then. Thank God Oates and Kurri never played with Coffee and Matt Cooke, or we'd have been roasted with the baked puns all night long. Weird Al would have been having a field day parodying Michael Jackson songs into food songs with that sort of line!
Yet good old Jarri, whom I loved as a kid, never scored 80+ goals, nevermind 92.
@@Seriously_Unserious Who else benefitted the most other than him. And I said it was an old joke. An 80s joke.
Not a chance
What? and play Forbort with Soucy?
Schenn was a far better player than Vicent. I really don't know how good of a passer he is or even recieving pucks. . If it is true then staff had seen something in him that would make them believe he can play at that level.. Not convinced but willing to have faith he does well.
Luke hasn't retired yet, he's 34 and with Nashville. He was never good offensively, the best he ever did was 22 points, twice, in his first seasons way back when he played with the Leafs for the first time. There's no reason to think Desharnais cannot have an average Schenn type of points per season which is about 12 per season. Still, I think a first pair d-man should be able to get to 30-35 points if they are to be second to the superstar on the pair, I thought about a lot of duos that worked great and even if one was huge and very physical, they still tended to have 30-40 assists even if they just scored 4-5 goals, sometimes both d-men being superstars on a pair is worth it, which could also be the case here for Vancouver, just leave Hronek with Hughes to start the season and if there was some inkling of a chemistry shown when pairing Hughes with Desharnais in the pre-season, maybe have it happen from time to time. Rarely does a first pair of d-men have only one guy doing all of the offense, works better when both can.
@@severed111 Pretty good defensively and protects team mates. And some crushing hits. Stay at home guy. Take a cheap shot on Quin and he would dummy you up..One of the toughest guys in the league.
@@goodeye6373 No doubt that my fellow Quebecois is a giant threat to anybody playing dirty, that's why he was there the whole season with EDM, him and Bouch would rough up anyone touching any of their uberstar players, I'll miss him in Edmonton in all case, but Broberg has to prove himself, which he kind of did when in the playoffs the Oilers needed more offense from the blue line and that overpaid Darnell couldn't make a play to save his life, I understood why they sat down Desharnais then. GL to Vinny and Canucks fans.
@@severed111 I think Broberg improved a lot. I have not seen to much of Desharnais, but staff think we got something. I liked what I saw in the playoffs.. Forbort could be a problem. Then again they could play great. Pretty hard to repeat last years start, but I think this team might be better than last year.Stronger up front. More balanced.
@@severed111 idk if we watched the same team lol. Vinnie and bouch were our least physical players lmao
