Stage 2 is for cars with either high flow cats or no cats at all. Without that extra flow out the exhaust, the engine is fighting knock and timing when set to stage 2. E30 will run better because it has a higher chemical cooling effect especially in direct injection cars, in addition to it raising the chemical octane as well. With the S63 engine family being hot vee with the cats (unfortunately) right at the hottest and most insulated part of the car, that trapped heat and reduced flow negatively affects your combustion quality. This is why you saw the best results on stage 1 E30. If you do not want to change your cat setup this is where you should stay. If you put on race cats or decat pipes, then you can use stage 2, otherwise you'll be tuning it for a configuration the engine isn't expecting, and see a reduction in performance.
i’m actually dealing with the same “issue” right now. the car on stock push the needle on gauges to the max. yet once tuned they refuse to go over 540? just tuned my f90 & i was so dumbfounded by this. i can’t find anything on the internet about it.
