I just ordered a VDB and a Negronne last night from two different websites. They are going into the ground here in Zone 8a on coastal NC. We average 4 to 5 inches of rain a month here year-round. Should do well! Looks to be about the perfect size of tree too. I do have hardpan clay mixed with sand though. I will just dig a large pan shaped hole with amended soil... and add compost/mulch to the to for feeding once a year (With some fish emulsion). I just need to get ahold of some panache tigers, and smiths as well and I will be set as far as figs go. I will also be planting some mulberry soon too. Later on I will work on putting in some more typical species that take longer to mature/and require more work.
I thinks it common for that variety the fruit is dry. I have seen one in my community garden. It could be just water issue. I started growing some this season.
I have a violet de bordeaux fig tree that I've kept potted, so it's obviously smaller, but I generally get figs twice the size of the ones you showed, I would recommend keeping figs in pots, I also have a California Mission fig and get the same results. I'm in Southern California so the weather is hot and dry and I water them every other day regardless of the weather.
I don't know if I missed it but how many years has your fig been planted there? How many years before it started producing? I'm considering getting this variety from Trees of Antiquity as these can grow in a bit cooler zone. Thanks!
That tree was planted in the spring of 2011. However it was a larger specimen already at the time of planting, probably 3 years old or so. Like most fig varieties it will start to produce fruit relatively early on (1 to 3 years) based on factors such as location, climate, fertilization, etc.
They are called Organza Bags. You can buy them at craft stores or online from places like amazon. They work well for the smaller birds, but when birds the size of starlings or larger start attacking the bags they sometimes fail. Overall I still get to eat more figs by using the bags.
Violette de Bordeaux and Negronne are very similar varieties. Some people even think they are the same. The tree needs direct sunlight for good fruit production. I noticed that this variety is not as happy as others in the full sun and heat here in Arizona. But it still needs sun for a good part of the day. Here in my hot dry climate this tree would probably be happiest with morning sun and some shade in the afternoon.
BuckeyeMCS Violette de Bordeaux is a common variety. There are many online nurseries that sell it. You may even find it at a big box store. I am on the Figs4Fun forum as FrozenJoe. If you send me a private message on F4F in December I can let you know if I have cuttings available.
This video was very informative. Living in hot South Florida now I know where to grow my violette fig. Under this semi shaded avocado tree lol

So it doesn't need pruning?
Where did you get those cloth bags to put over your figs? Do they work well for birds?

Nice!
What area of az are you in? In the desert or up north?
I got a similar one to yours called Negronne. I guess Ill put it in a shady spot.

MrFrozenJoe Yeah, I think partial shade is a good idea because here it gets 50C+ in the summer.
Where did you get the bags over the fruit?
how tall is your grass bra?
Bra! 😅
How do you suggest I get a cutting of this tree?
