Spoon Carving ASMR With Fire in Cabin

  • Watch as I carve a spoon from a hunk of willow in a cabin during a snowstorm. This piece of willow was very hard because it has been drying for almost a year. Ideally, I would have carved this spoon when it was still green... It would have been much easier!
I did a lot of the shaping with my trusty Boker Arbolito that I have had for over 20 years.
It was also fun using a couple of knives that I hadn't a chance to carve with yet.
The Buck 110 was surprisingly comfortable to work with despite it's bulky appearance. The Beavercraft hook knife performed really well and I look forward to using it again soon.
Remember, if you try this, please work very slowly and never carve toward yourself with the full force of your arm. You should get very comfortable with carving away from yourself and handling a knife before ever attempting something like this. When I am carving toward my hands or body, I am only using the muscles in my hands and I am not putting much force into the blade. If your knife is sharp, the work should be easy and very controllable.
Great food-safe woods for making spoons:
Fruitwoods (although they are harder to carve)
    Willow
    Birch
    Alder
    Tools used in this video:
    Buck 110 folding knife: bit.ly/3OFnSrP
    Beavercraft Hook knife: amzn.to/3HVLyVk

    Thanks for watching!

Do it! They aren't expensive at all. Even if they were expensive, they'd be worth it. It's a great way to unwind and relax.

Morakniv make an excellent line of carving knives and hook knives but for an even cheaper option there's a company called beavercraft out of Ukraine that make usable gear if you can't stretch to the price of the Morakniv stuff

Everyone needs to notice that you never once carve toward your holding hand, body or leg and you are patiently taking small controlled cuts. Very safe and peaceful activity. Nice video Gordon.

I made a how to video about spoon carving for a school project last year, but we had to keep it to 3 minutes. I was able to get the info across but it was kind of a bummer because you lose the whole experience of carving. Thanks for this peaceful, immersive, calming experience.

Thanks so much for watching. I never know how these more silent and less-hyped videos will go over. I sure do enjoy making them now and then!

Lovely video. TShansen (here on RUclips) does this as well. But more out of Norwegian tradition with amazing decorative carvings in the handle. He made a video about it once as well.

Thanks for this, really motivated me to go to the woods next week and start carving some of my own cutlery! Hope there's some nice birch wood available. All the best!

3 things i recommend for a carving kit apart from knives, chisels and gouges would be a carpenters pencil (mark your work, even if you're not going to stick with it and "listen to the wood talk") 😂 strop with compound. I use a wide piece of unfixed cowhide so i can lay it on a flat surface for knives and chisels but also bend it for hook knives and gouges. I prefer tormek paste, but any blocks, compounds, or emulsions will do, even toothpaste at a push. The last thing is a small axe or hatchet. It's more efficient for removing materials for, say handles, or if you're producing a blank from, say, fresh cut green timber. Personally, all my carving knives are either vintage or modern Mora knives and my carving hatchet is a Gransfors Bruks. Better buy once cry once because this gear will last your lifetime and get handed on to your kids.

What kind of wood works best for this? And should it be seasoned or more on the green side?
Loved watching this one, just educational and relaxing.

Birch, alder, or willow are great woods for carving spoons and they are food-safe. I suggest using a more green piece as it’s way easier to carve. This piece of willow was very seasoned and dry, which made it much harder to carve. I wanted to make a spoon out of this particular piece though, because it came from a tree on my property. Thanks for watching and for the support! Glad it was relaxing to watch!

Do you have a how to video on this?
It seems like it could be a good activity while camping and backpacking.
