The air coming in from all directions, and having air go OUT up are huge for the CR boxes as well though. Its about more than just the filter surface area (though this is without a doubt better than the 1" on the back of the fan)
You just need to tape the filter to the back of the fan, nothing advanced. Just make sure the flow direction is correct and all, with the air being pulled into the filter and blown out the fan.

Use a small bungee cord. Hook on the front grid. But this huge filter is too think. It will work but the air flow will be significantly less and motor will strain. Just use the 1 inch thick filters with a high mere rating
@@josie1130 The video claims that one inch causes more strain, I don't know how to evaluate that. The evidence I see that could support the videos claim is that the bigger one has more surface area because those corrugated lines are able to go more distance.
What possible logic can you have for why a single 1" filter bogs down the fan motor but a 5" filter somehow has 'more airflow' and doesn't bog it down?
A 5" has more surface area, the cleats are deeper. Its commonly used in car engine/cabin air filters. I have a filter that is literally 5 inches wide because the cleats come up and out of the paper part, to get more surface area. I still believe this is considerably worse than using 4 1" filters. One important part of these air filters is that it shoots up, its hard for this sytem to do that.
Edit: I figured it out! I replied to my own comment. I subscribed! I'm confused, it's the same surface area as the 1inch, so won't it, after use, still cause just as much resistance for your motor?
What do you think of for your design adding what some CR Box designs where they put cardboard around the corners (where the fan does not touch)? Exactly. I don’t get the other idea… makes zero sense., I’d suggest the Lennox merv 16 filter. The 20x20 is 90-100. Same price for the 20x25. The 16x25 is only 65 or 57 if you get a 2 pack. Wish the 20x20 was same price as its almost exactly the same amount of filter material but it’s not… my window happens to be 33”x25” so I got the 16”x25 and will fit 2 in window and then can have 2 box fans side by side… I’ll try other arrangements as well. The 20x25 is also appealing for a box fan as you can just have the width slightly oversized and some air will pass through the extra material. I think it’ll only be an inch or so on each side so it’s really not that big of a deal.. for the same money why not get that extra 5” haha

You people asking how to build it make me SMH. Just tape the damn thing to the fan. With a box or this method, it does not matter which way the fan is blowing like some people think. Even with the box method, you’re either trapping the dust on the inside of the box or the outside of the box and the same goes for this method.
It's always better for the fan to be pulling in clean air, so you want the filters on the BACK of the fan, cleaning air with the filter before it gets to the fan.
@@MrSupahlovah the difference is negligible. Fans are made to just pull air through them and it’s no filter. The actual dust being pulled through a fan isn’t what causes a fan to fail. The motor is sealed so I would still say it doesn’t matter .
