The Battle of Sudoměř was one of the first battles of the Hussite Wars. Against all odds, the one-eyed Jan Žižka managed to fend off a much larger Royalist cavalry force.

Love the topic !
I appreciate you covering the feats of Jan Ziska, one of the greatest generals in history. He was almost always heavily outnumbered in his battles and always came out on top!
Is Frederick the Great finished? I was really enjoying that series.
@@JamesBu11 far from finished. There's four more years to cover. These episodes are a bit of a detour to maintain variety and see if I can reach new audiences.
I am the author of a beginner historical channel, I want to offer you a collaboration.
Jan Zizka was an absolutely badass. Always outnumbered, never lost. He maybe didn't win as much battles as other famous generals, but Zizka was pretty much creative with his tactics.
Yeah, using firearms on that level in the Middle Ages when firearms were still relatively rare and did not yet realize their true potential in warfare is pretty insane.
Charles the IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, had a long and successful reign. The Empire he ruled from Prague expanded, and his subjects lived in peace and prosperity. When the Emperor died, the whole Empire mourned. More than 7,000 people accompanied him on his last procession.
The heir to the throne of the flourishing Empire was Charles' son, Wenceslas IV, whose father had prepared him for this moment all his life. But Wenceslas did not take after his father. He neglected affairs of state for more frivolous pursuits.
God be with you
Hey, Henry has come to see us!
Can't wait for the sequal to Kingdom Come Deliverance, hoping it gets made.
@@Harrier_DuBoishey pretty much leaked we are getting news about it ( probably late 2023/early 2024) they just want to be able to show actual gameplay. Also probably will bw set in the hussite war
The Hussite Wars! Now, there's a little covered war. Outstanding! House of History, love all your vids. Thanks. Cheers.
As a Czech a grew up with stories about Žižka and Hussites. I was always aware this period is very significant for many Czechs even today but I was not aware how significant was Žižka and his innovations for the modern military history. Mass usage of fire-arms, standardization of weaponry and army procedures, mobile defense (wagons as medieval tanks). End of medieval heavy cavalry as of superior force, implementation of "common people" into standardized army, emphasis on superiority of mobile defensive warfare. And of course the very word "pistol" from the czech word "píšťala" (the flute) adopted for the hand-cannon the Hussies used :) Basically Hussites invented the modern army concept as we know it today...
Love to see content on the Hussite Wars, such an under-explored conflict with such long lasting impact and foreshadowing of conflicts to come.
amazing job as always, my favorite youtube historian. thanks for all the videos and education
Thank you very much!
The first Hussite battle was the battle near the Nekmíř fortress in December 1419 (January 1420). The royal troops were commanded by Bohuslav of Šwamberk, and his army had a strength of 2,000 infantry and cavalry. Jan Žižka had an army strength of 300 infantry and 7 chariots. In the battle, Hynek of Nekmíř fell on the royal side, and Jan Žižka won the battle. He then chose the same strategy in the battle of Sudoměř, where one of the commanders, Jindřich of Hradec, fell on the royal side. cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitva_u_Nekmíře
Very excited for this!! For me this is easily one of the most interesting conflicts of the "later middle ages" :D
Thx for Hussite wars, something from Czech history. Very nice work about Seven years war.
please start a serie on the hussite wars!
Best channel to kickstart my weekend after a long week at work, thanks for your work my guy
I absolutely love this channel! high quality which I suspect is not backed by too many human resources. good job my friend, thank you for your efforts!
Hello from Czech Republic! Thank you for great video. I'm proud of Jan Žižka he is greates military commander in our history.
Fantastic!! Keep up the AWESOME WORK my friend!!!
Excellent presentation, as always.
Another great video! As always
Another high quality series one of history's greatest captains - Jan Zizka.
Always so informative
thanks for sharing this Amazing introducing of This Historical Events
I've been interested in reading and watching documentaries on the Wars of Religion and the subsequent Thirty Years War for some time. Thank you for sheading light on this little known battle.
I really appreciate your effort to describe Bohemian history, unfortunately many of the information you have presented is based on some not very reliable sources. I could recommend some reliable sources such as "Jan Zizka" written by historian Petr Cornej, but these would be in Czech language only. Anyway, it is good to know that people these days are still interested in the history of my homeland. Long live to Bohemia!
Great topics, you are really great, congrats
Excellent video.
I've heard about these wars. Nicely done video.
Another fantastic video(From a proud patreon!)
Good selection, glad this channel is gettting the attention it deserves!
Much appreciated!
Yes, hussites! Great topic :)
Just donated the other day. As you continue through the 7 years war, can you eventually do all of the battles between the French and the Coalition army, etc.? Also the battles fought between the pragmatic armies and the French during the SIlesian wars? Those would round out the battles of Frederick. Im watching and rewatching all of those episodes as I listen through a book on Frederick on audible. Really great stuff. :)
Great idea! I am currently working on the Battle of Krefeld. Thank you very much for your support, I really appreciate it!
Are you going to cover the other battles of the Hussite wars.
Very nice video! I am Czech so I really enjoy when I see Hussites here:-) If you need some support (for pronounciation or so..but yours is quite good even when czech is very difficult language) dont hesitate to ask me, I ll be happy to help:-)
The carts sort of remind me of the Muscovite moving firing platforms for sieges.
Nah, they werent used for moving. They were a fort. Used for stoping cavalry charges. The hussites usualy nade a circle of wagons bound together by chains and placed cannons betveen them. Then forced the crusaders into attack by using the cannons and defended against the charge. If all went well, the crusaders started to flee, and then some of the wagons were pulled aside to make a gap and send out hussite cavalry and finish the enemy.
So good
The pronunciation of names is little wacky, but the information is pretty well researched.
Thumbs up!
3:05 rozmberg.
I wonder what descent that could be
Sigismund didnt lie, he gave him safe passage only for way to council.
Maybe you could do a video about the early German campaigns in Poland, Hungary and Bohemia around the time of the Salian dynasty? There is not a lot of info available on wikipedia and I think that is a shame. Maybe you can find out more.
I'd suggest you do the battles of the middle kingdom in China and also the medieval period in Japan covering the shogunates
To be perfectly honest Sigismund could not do single thing to back his protection to Hus, against will of Pope. The fact everyone involved must have been aware. Including Sigismund and Hus. Hus must have know what are his chances and went there anyway. Despite this, this event forever tarnished Sigismund reputation.
The1420 arquebuses were able to inflict heavy casualty on the heavily armed knights? Impressive!
1972 I learn about the husit rebelion. In fact they were protestants
More Hussite wars!
I would call the Hussites opponents Catholics rather than Royalists.
And justva few months later Žižka led an even larger victory in the defense of Prague (again being outnumbered 5 to 1)
Zizka was the prime Erwin Rommel of his day, he was simply unbeatable in terms of tactical mastery and witt.
...I've seen documentaries about Martin Luther's life - as well about Jan Huss, but what I woud be truly interested would be a good quality documentary about WYCLIFF... afterall he was the man that started it all...
Please do the 3 Illyrian Wars.
I'm not sure how much history is taught in other countries such as Spain, but I would like to know exactly what happened when the Spanish invaded Comanche territory in the 1500s and early 1600s. The reason I ask is because I was working a labor job in Vancouver British Columbia and a co-worker from Mexico asked me if I was native and I said yes I'm higher and he spoke about about the Haida and the conquistadors. Which made me curious about the history behind the Comanche territory invasions.
This is a great topic for a series that you approach with good attention to historical detail. I wonder if the Hussites, as Slavs, were not influenced by Slavic Orthodox Christians, who to this day take communion from a collective chalice under both species.
One request though: please don't abandon the 7 Years War!
I certainly won't! I am working on Domstadtl and Krefeld at the moment.
They definitely did. Jeronyme of Prague (a burned colegue of Hus) traveled a lot west and east (Byzantion) and inspired future hussites greatly by orthodoxy.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerome_of_Prague
@@chiachiachia100 The symbol of the chalice on their flag also tipped me that this might be the case. Thanks!
Yea, the chalice was a symbol of wine taken as the blood of christ, wich was one of their demands.
Make video on the siege of Vienna 1529
Any one else here after looking up who Jan huss was when you were playing kingdom come deliverance
A preacher, who opposed the church, claiming that redeeming sins for money was an outrage. Like Martin Luther King before it was cool.
Just like Martin Luther......except the Hussites were armed and ready!
Because they knew that,
there were would be No Mercy.
Give us more Persian Roman wars
This looks like a start of an epic series!
Also, here's a bit of a theme song for it - "Ktož jsú boží bojovníci" (Ye Who Are Warriors of God):
ruclips.net/video/elskCac9wSI/видео.html
Thank you for sharing. I love to delve into the music surrounding topics I cover. It adds another dimension!
It is said, the crusaders heard this song and fled the battle of domazlice
Omg finally , finally a someone who named Czechia correctly it was not bohemia, bohemian was only part of Czech land's, the official name was land's of the bohemian crown or shortly crown of bohemia or just Czech land's,🏰👑
btw it's sad that nobody mentioned Moravian knight Jan sokol z Lamberka who learned him the tactic Jan Žižka was famous for 😕 and he was the one who bring Žižka to grunwald because Jan sokol z Lamberka was good freind of king Vladislav, It is precisely the numerous gifts and expressions of favor with which Vladislav included Jan Sokol that tell us about the role this warrior played in the Battle of Grunwald . 🇨🇿♥️🇵🇱
He have own Wikipedia you can read about him 😅👍
No, Bohemia in Latin was also name for crown of Bohemia. Kingdom of Bohemia is also Bohemia proper.
@@hvezdoslav8992 you have it wrong bohemia is only one part of the bohemian crown, it was sometimes referred as Bohemia as a whole because bohemia had higher status within the Czech land's, officially not even in documents, so the video have it right.
@@holextv5595 No, I dont have it wrong, during existence of Duchy of Bohemia, no Margraviate of Moravia existed.
Mount Tabor ? Thats my first time hearing about it. Its located in Izreal. As far as I know, Taborité were named the town of Tábor...
Yea. And the town was named after the mountain.
I think Taborites was due to the core ofr their strength was in the city of Tabor.
True. They fouded a city there.
No Hussite wars in your playlist. Very frustrating.
wait..where is our 7 year war stories...
Soon!
@@HoH Pview!... was getting worried.
I must say this is the only history creator on RUclips that hasn't eventually said something that made me want throw up and unsubscribe so great job!

raid is the worst kind of p2w garbage made by a casino company
video restarts at 2:07
let's attack those armoured waggons and all their firepower with our cavalry. What can possibly go wrong...
I misread this as "The Battle of Sodomy"...
If you look up hussite sect of Adamites, you wiil get to sodomy as close as possible.
I just wanna say: nice facts you got there, nothing wrong. But pronouncing czech names, there you should train a bit. We have more letters than in english, for instance Ř isnt the same as R. C is never pronounced as K, but TS.
You should have made separate videos for the Battle of Hastenbeck and Siege of Olmutz. You're just looking pro-Prussian.
Tabor wasn't old strategic fortress. Tabor was founded in 1420 by the Hussites, get your facts straight.
The word “Know” is pronounced *N-Oh*
Not *N-Er*
Pronunciation is key, take a look at the great “Epic History” channel for guidance.
What?
Gotta love english language elitists. Not everybody was born in english- speaking country, and honestly this guy is quite easy to understand.
@@HoH I just listened to the video and I am a native English speaker. I had no difficulty whatsoever understanding you and don't even know (!) what this commenter is talking about. Keep it up! You do a great job mixing historical context and battlefield play-by-play.
And how many languages do you speak perfectly, sir? And please, not those you may have been born into, those you learned in advanced age...
I don't know your nationality, but you spell ALL names wrong. For a Czech I got headache. If you are preparing a story, try at least listen to the names before!
Love the Bohemian map. Krumlov, Tábor or Sudoměř is written in czech, Pilsen is in german and Prague in english. What a mess really. But evidently there was some effort put into research, unlike several other channels I've seen cover this period, and the pronunciantion isnt bad either.
