Joan Rivers interviews Jane Russell

- Things get a little awkward in this interview between Joan Rivers and Jane Russell. But Jane carries on in a professional manner. Incidentally, Joan was wrong. Jane wrote in her book that became pregnant and had an illegal abortion (which left her unable to have children) PRIOR to entering into a romantic affair with actor John Payne. More awkward moments come when Jane sings to Joan's husband, Edgar. May they all RIP.
I think Jane Russell was too down to earth for Joan. Joan wanted gossip, glitter, glam....I think Jane was more everyday, straight forward, take no prisoners. She was a tough woman who knew who she was.
Rivers was jealous of EVERYONE, because they all were more talented than she ever could've been.
@@DDumbrille ... No. Joan Rivers loved her profession, she loves celebrities, yes she loved gossip. But she also loved entertaining her audience. And she tried to get more out of Jane Russell than Jane Russell wanted to give. Which is strange, because Jane Russell was there to plug her autobiography. But Jane Russell was an honery kind of woman and you have to take her as she is. And after all these years, I now see Jane Russell as a good actress and a wonderful, wonderful singer, which she demonstrated right there. Joan Rivers was one of the best interviewers ever, and I miss her entertainment presence and always will.
@@Jasper7182009 If ANYONE was ornery (not "honery") it was Rivers. She was full of self-hatred which she projected on others. She didn't love celebrities, she was intensely jealous of them. She never said she was just kidding like Don Rickles made a point of doing, because she wasn't. A bitter, sad woman...
@@Jasper7182009 You're right. Jane was there to plug her book. Rivers asked about some of the stuff in the book and Russell got all self-righteous and "holy." She did as she damn well pleased, when no-one wanted to play anymore she conveniently caught religion and became unbearably prissy and "moral" when it was to her advantage.
@@BlueRidgeMtns100 A) Jane Russell was always religious, re several sources I read, including her obituary in The Guardian.
B) Jane did Not get pregnant from that guy Joan mentioned. Joan got it all wrong. Jane had an abortion after getting pregnant with the guy she Later Married. They didn't want to have the child out of wedlock. Sadly, the backstreet procedure was Botched and Ms. Russell got extremely ill and she was infertile after that. Jane and her husband adopted and raised three children. Jane later set up an adoption advocacy or charity organization or something called WAIF. She was a really good, cool person who Was tough and talented and Joan was a pest who didn't get her facts straight. She was trying to get Jane to talk about a very blatant subject and she was rude and it's Fantastic how Ms. Russell calmly did not take the bait.
Joan overstepped here. Russell handled the situation with decorum & class!
Truly
Jane looks gorgeous here!!! One the greatest of the greatest generation in American history....
Truly classy woman Joan Rivers you cannot get to Jane Russell she's more intelligent
What a beautiful singing voice Jane Russell. Your are still so gorgeous, we miss you so much Jane.
Jane Russell is like the rest of us, we all have made some serious mistakes in our past. It's great to see that (in spite of that fact) she conducted herself during this interview with dignity & grace!
jane is one of the coolest people ever
she was really tasteless in this interview prying into jane's past about her abortion. Jane was a classy woman and joan was just cringe-worthy
@@iamAwesomo1994 made for a great clip though, didn’t it?
@@mikehunt7360 it made for a memorable clip because of how tone deaf she was asking those personal questions.
Wow she aged so gracefully 😍
I feel it. I'm told I look 29 0r 30.. my daughter and I are daughter and mother and they think we're sisters . She's 31, and I'm 49
What a gorgeous, sophisticated, classy woman.
jane really looks great here.
Joan is a better comedian than she is interviewer.
She was trained well by the studios. That interview could have got her in trouble in the day.
You gotta watch the shit interview she did with Bette Davis...it’s like she was shitting bricks...nervous the whole time!
Jane didn’t wanna talk about it and idiot Joan is like “let’s look it up in the book”...leave Jane alone!
Joan is such a smart ass. Parts of the interview are funny, but Joan made light of the darkest topics in Jane's autobiography. Jane kept it cool though, tough gal.
Danielle Henderson She was one of the very few genuine believers. As was evidenced by her actions. Not just because she said *"I am a Christian" God bless her.
You can tell Jane Russell is getting pissed off with Joan Rivers. Especially at 4:07 you could just tell by her face. And I don’t blame Jane because she kept going on about chapter 14 in her book. As much I some what like Joan Rivers I think the way she was with Jane wasn’t funny and it Joan was just pure irritating
How rude of Joan, have never seen a celebrity treated so obnoxiously, Jane should have got up and walked out. True-to-type Joan Rivers, no class or decorum.
Jane Russell was promoting her book. Jane Russell discussed her own abortion as well as her extramarital affairs in the book. If you write about these things in your autobiography and then go on talk shows to promote the book to increase sales, there is a good chance someone might bring those topics up, especially when you publicly speak about abortion and your own abortion at pro-life rallies. There is limited conversation in asking about Howard Hughes designing a bra for Jane Russell. Ms. Russell's film work was limited and lackluster and leads only to a few questions about what was Marilyn Monroe like in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Russell comes across as a nice enough person but not exactly sparkling.
Sedona Legend I agree, Joan did treat Jane obnoxiously. And I felt that Joan was so irritating. I feel sorry for Jane because you could tell that Joan was just annoying her and I mean no wonder
Almost as bad as watching Ruby Wax walk up to a table of celebs, completely ignore Jane Russell and instead talk to some 5 minute wonder of the moment instead.
sometimes people don't click. it was just kind of dull. I don't think Jane wanted to be there.
@@BlueRidgeMtns100 Yeah but I think Joan got the facts wrong. She said Jane got pregnant with some other guy's baby,, that just wasn't true. It caught Jane by surprise and then she was going to have to explain the whole tragic episode, which is extremely personal and heart breaking even tho it's in her book. So she just pushed the f.-it button. Good for her!
Around 3:44 things get very awkward. Jane had already had the botched abortion that left her unable to have kids.
Instead of emphasizing her chest, Joan should have pointed out Jane's other asset: long long legs. Judging from this interview I suspect Jane didn't care much for Joan Rivers.
I don't blame her, honestly what woman on earth would talk about her abortion on a talk show? It was a bit out of line to bring it up I think
@@spaniard_flower2539 Lana Turner talked about the abortion she had on Phil Donahue. Jane was doing these shows to promote her book. If she didn't want to talk about having the abortion that's fine. But you can't write a book and expect someone, especially Joan not to bring up certain aspects of it.
@@PatrickLHawkins Yes, it is very logical that the contents of a book being promoted on live television, may inevitably be exposed. But Lana Turner isn't Jane Russel, women handle certain life tragedies and circumstances differently. Furthermore there are many books with personal stories outlined within them, but some of those specific experiences are very intimate and the subject matters require more sensitive approaches than displayed here.
I don’t like that she pushed the pregnancy thing but I like that she did drop it and move on.
Wow what a beauty and total class act - Joan Rivers had no class at this interview
jane russell sat there and spit bars after bars against joan LIVE while everyone was expecting to sing whatever hahahaha savage. so clever, fast, melodic, on time.
She reminds me of Dorothy in Golden Girls here. Even her bored reactions to Joan with her lowclass questions. Joan doesn't take bullshit...
Being a star must be difficult because people think of you as divine. There's no human side left
Pure class.
Damn good reason Russell survived Hollywood where many of her co-horts didn't....too smart too tough and knew the whole thing was just BS and she's rather be home on the farm.
Jane Russell, what a gal!
Love Jane. One of the few, only,One Marilyn's presence couldn't put in the shade. I'm thinking of "Diamonds" of course. They worked together so well.
Cool seeing a younger John Hurt on here. Realizing everyone here is dead is dead is kind of strange
I don't think that Rex Reed is dead...
@@randysills4418 didn't know who that was so I ballparked it since pretty much everyone else was
Have always been a fan of Joan Rivers and of Jane Russell but I have to say this interview was not Joanie's finest hour.
Joan was great in her profession also . She was my favorite comedian. Miss her and her quick wit!
Jane looks fabulous.
Always enjoy Joan's humor but here she comes across like a bulldozer. Miss Russell's singing voice is a real delight!
Is that Rex Reed the critic on the couch? Poor Joan: she was really pushing this interview like she was desperate for some exciting sleaze to boost her show's ratings. SAD. Jane Russell did a good job fending her off:-/
Angela Joseph Yep, Rex Reed is sitting right near Jane!!
I have been such a huge fan of both of these women since I was a young girl, starting around the time Joan's late night show was still on. I did not know this interview existed, and I have to admit that it pains me to see that this interview wasn't as lively as I had hoped!
I like that she doesn't let Joan Rivers intimidate her or annoy her. Jane Russell has great insight into herself.
I cannot believe Joan would try to discuss Jane's abortion, wow, for those interested Jane turned to Jesus. Jane handled it with class, no anger. She was old world sophisticated never crude like today's actresses but so glam.
It's interesting what's happening here though. Jane may seem boring in this interview but if you read her biography you'll find that she is everything but. The issue here is that Jane is being very laconic and modest when it comes to the risky topics in her autobiography. For example, Joan asks Jane about Howard Hughes and Jane says Howard was scared of women. If you read Jane's autobiography, Howard actually ended up in bed with Jane and tried to feel her breasts. I mean come on! How scared of women could Howard have been? Another example is when Joan asks Jane if men hit on her and Jane says no. In Jane's book, Jane not only had one but two extramarital affairs. So you can say that guys were more than enamored with her good looks. So Joan is basically trying to pull the grit of Jane's book out of this interview but Jane insist on being modest and laconic. So between Jane's extreme modesty and Joan's lack of a verbal filter, this makes for a very interesting interview. The dynamics!
Very very well said
Fantastic observations !!
Wow siren of the silver screen stunngly beautiful inside and out xxx
i love Joan. Miss her humor. And I love janes personality. Great ladies
I miss seeing Joan Rivers on Fashion Police on E!
This probably one of the most spectacular and beautiful women
If we are talking Hollywood beauties. Yes bodily she had beautiful
Features but her eyes were remarkably inviting. And she had strength.
If I were to think of the most attractive women, I would think of her first.
She had it all inside and out.
So at ease! Still soooo lovely!
Oh man this interview is too funny , Joan and Jane together and so different .
Beautiful and grateful. The movie The Outlaw was a great movie that movie made her famous
Wow! Never realized what a beautiful voice she had. Englebert Humperdinck said he had a crush on her growing up . 😂
Jane looks great
Look at how handsome John Hurt was. Look at him!!! Jesus
Jane is eternal! so glamourous and classy..
which year was that?
Jane did not like Joan at all
Why on earth did she agree to go on if you don’t like the host or the hosts sense of humour
I agree. Could be her publisher made her go, to promote the book.
which year?
I'm not shy about admitting my admiration for Jane Russell's attributes, but I've got nothing on Joan. It seems like every other comment from Joan is about Jane's famous bazooms and/or the undergarment required to hold them up!
..."You know what I am saying?" :D
1:24-1:35 Different Levels? Is that why they did a Hip Hop Squares recently?
Wow this was horrible! Jane seemed either irritated or uncomfortable AND Joan didnt seem to understand where Jane's borders were as she kept pushing where Jane clearly didnt wanna go. Painful to watch.
Joan Rivers classless. Edgar even here thinking of checking out.
Definitely one of the cool cats 👌 original OG 😎
2:50-3:17 It's interesting how they describe Howard Hughes as a Jimmy Stewart wherein women wanted to mother him
when was this?
December 1986
Lawrence Williams thank you
Is that John Hurt sitting there?
Yes. I'm amazed no one else has mentioned it. Look at how cute he is. Nature is cruel...
jane is a lady.......
7:53-8:02 Mark?
RIP Edgar
For today’s standard, Marylin and Jane would be considered to big to be a star
Actually, Monroe was considered quite small by today’s standards at 5’6”, 117lbs-135lbs depending on the time of her life.
Russell was not large at all. Tall, yes, but not large.
The idea of Golden-Age Era actresses being large for today’s standards was a marketing ploy focused on Monroe for the appeal of plus-sized women.
❤❤❤❤❤ Joan Rivers you better back off Jane Russell does not need to explain
who are the other guests?
Well one of them is John fricken Hurt!!! Don't know the dude in the middle.
@@annnee6818 and movie reviewer Rex Reed, the only one that is still alive.
The Chest Hunt? Alaska?
WOW This was not working FIRST TIME
Joan RIvers needed to improve her interview style
rivers is clearly on speed
7:30-7:40 As Sorority sisters?
I bet many had wild thoughts on her.
I love Jane Russell😍
i thought at times, she either sounded like she'd been drinking, or her teeth didn't fit.
LOVE JOANIE - JUST ADORE HER (GOD REST HER SOUL) AND RECENTLY WATCHED A BIOGRAPHY ON JANE AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH HER. IT IS FUN LOOKING BACK AT SPECIAL T.V. MOMENTS REGARDING GREAT HOLLYWOOD STARS.
Goddess 💗💗💗💗💗💗
Jane goes on this show to promote her book but refuses to discuss what’s in it?
I mean there’s more interesting things in that book that only the abortion
As you all know, Edgar committed suicide not long after this.
JACK ANTHONY Edgar who?
JACK ANTHONY who's Edgar??
@@ladivinapr Joan River's husband
You think it was because Joan asked battleship Jane about some of the events she openly discussed in the book she was promoting on the show?
@@BlueRidgeMtns100 I suspect it was about the show in general, the ratings weren't as good as they wanted and Edgar was getting some heat because he was her right hand man for the show.
it’s the worst interview i have ever watched. joan should have been fired. Crass, classless and vulgar.
For most of the time, Joan Rivers was absolutely, a social butterfly, not Jane Russell.
Wow
Every time Reed speaks it's just sewage.
clapping,,,,,
That face tho
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
From a mad keen 76yo Aussie fan.
What a lovely lady & great star,Jane was.
Don't think Edgar has any sense of humor..
Boring? Did the money run out.
Angry like the world
I think Joan realized she misstepped and dug herself further and further into the hole
Oh yes, I thought that, it comes across.....
GENTILMEN PREFER BLONDES? NO, REAL MEN WANT HOT BRUNETTES!!!
🙏🌹🌅🙏✝️
Joan was such a funny lady but could be really annoying as well
jjane was a big woman
And now they're all dead😕
No Rex Reed seated next to Jane is still going strong
