Thanks man, I just got one of these and was thinking it maybe wasn't as good as the hype. Turns out I didn't even know about the paper under the lid of the test-bottle. Turns out it was still getting a hit (though not as well) on a SEALED bottle. After taking that paper off.. damn.. what a sensitive bugger. Think I'm gonna love this thing.

Great tutorial Ralph. Don't have one BUT I will eventually. I used one exclusively from 1981-1990, so very aware of how good they are. Buying everything little by little again as I get back into field work again more and more. Should be back full-time by next summer. Should have never let my tools go, but my health got so bad, I felt field work was over for good. Found a product that turned my health 180* and so here I come again @ 54,lol. Take care, Brett

Good video...With the case off you will find where the adjustment screw has a black dot indicating the original setting for the sensor...I only wish you'd have show how to replace the damn ball as I can't get the clear plastic off and am afraid of breaking it...I thought mine going bad because of the sound, but it's no nosier than yours and maybe even quieter...Thanks for the video.

I get why you would put the setting on small for R-410 due to the high pressure. This makes a lot of sense to me now. the problem that I was having was not letting the detector warm up. Ill wait the 2 mins. I have to leak check a unit tomorrow morning at an animal hospital out here in Las Vegas Nevada. the unit is a 12 year old goodman 1 ph unit. 3 ton heat pump. thanks for the help.

I started out in 1987 the boss had H-10's for all the techs, it's the only leak detector I have ever used.
I have tried other hand held detectors of friends and co workers and always felt they just didn't work as well as the H-10.
I also have the rechargeable version and it works great.
    Perfect video walk through.

I have two H10 detectors, one is a Yokogawa for about 1992 and the other is a GE H10 from the 80's. I also had the Date battery operated but the tips were 80 bucks and didn't last but about 10 to 15 searches and then required replacement. That model has been discontinued. I also bought the JB Prowler and it was the worst one ever, it didn't find leaks that I could feel with my wrist during a search, and unless you were directly on the leak without moving, it wouldn't sound off.... Returned it twice and then gave up on the piece of junk...it wasn't cheap either....My H10 doesn't work with 410a so I got the Fieldpiece one most guys use now (dont remember the number)... leak searching is to be done with 22 and nitro so my H10 is the balls....

Hey Jim, this leak detector does not require zeroing out. You just pull the wand away from the area where it was going off and it resets it self. I use mine to find all leaks. Very seldom do I ever have to isolate a coil to condemn it,as a matter of fact if there is a leak in the coil I will find it with this leak detector.

The sensor I found for $140 and the filter/tip/ball kit for $80. I bought one used for very cheap, and the vacuum pump sounds horrible on the med or hi settings. It's not detecting the bottle, so I will mess with it a bit (blow sensor, change screw setting, etc) and see if I can get it to work. It was $16 with shipping, so if I don't, it's no big loss. Will let you know. The balance control seems to react about like yours, so maybe there is some hope, yet.
I bought one of the super cheap sensors ($30), and it sort of worked for a while, but then it didn't very soon after that....pretty much useless, as you would expect. Looking to find a BAD 134 leak in a fridge...lousy sensor said evap, about the center.

Hi T & N, Thanks for the Shout out at the end of the Video, that Was a Cool Suprise! Hope u Are Doing Well. I Actually Own About 3 of these Leak Detectors. I've Been Using them Since 1981. Ge H10 B. Now I've Got the H10 G's. They Usually Only Last Me About 10 Years, then it's Time For a New One. One is Allways in Service Getting Repaired or Calibrated or Something But since i Watched your Video Maybe i Will Start to Replace the Sensors myself. I've never Been Turning the Screw up as the Sensors age. i've Just been sending them out for Repair. ( at $210.00) a Pop. I think your Video Might Start Saving me some Money. I'll Let u Know. I Like the way you Test the Ball Float. I'm Gonna Try that Way. I Have just allways Put the Plastic Sucker end on my Cheek and Feel the Suction on my cheek.( no cheek jokes please.) The Last one Just Went in for Repair because i accidently Dropped the Plastic Probe in a Condensate Drain Pan. it sucked in Water and stopped working. Have You Ever Done That? and if So How Did you Save your Leak Detector? Thanks, Phil.

I bought an inficon tek mate about a year ago and have been far from impressed.
I was walking through the storeroom Monday and was looking for a tubing cutter, flare swedge kit, and some other stuff I've been needing. Look down on the shelf and there is an H10.
I took it to the storeroom guy and said I was gonna buy one but did he mind if I tried it. He said go ahead. Brought it home and it had some sticky stuff in the probe but had replacement filters and vacume balls. The probe needs replacement since the light is broke. Turned it on let it warm up and tuned it I like you show in video. Tested it outside on my own unit near the cap.
It worked!! I'm gonna pick up a new probe and maybe send it out for calibration. Worked great but calibration sticker shows 2007.

Great Video! The reason it is called an H10 is there was an earlier H6 and before that an H1 by General Electric.
The H in all models is for Halogen.
The H10 came out in about 1964 ie 50 years ago. John A Roberts of General Electric has patent 3071722 dated Jan 1,1963 and is the author of many of the GE patents relating to this detector and other related leak detector stuff.
The H6 is a small unit too but I believe older. It a similar sniffer probe.
The H-1 is a giant boat anchor that has meters on it.
General Electric is the first maker of the famed great H10 and later it got sold and rebadged by others. The replaceable element in Ralph's new H10 in this video fits into the H10 by GE of 50 years ago.
The super old H10's by GE have the sensor hidden inside; you remove the unit from its case and it is right below the right side. In this video the sensor is vertical; super old models have the sensor horizontal below the faceplate and there is no aluminum cover at the far right.
These H10 units are classics and have found more leaks than all other detectors combined

In my beginning of research trying to break away from the fieldpiece infrared I have. I have only found the h10 g plug in the best, I will be searching for 410A and r22 leaks primarily. Recently I was beginning to think about the battery powered but and now swaying back and forth. I have heard that the h10 pro with the battery is worse at detecting 410A leaks or other leaks that are small. It would make sense that the battery May operate at a lesser heated sensor. May be the reason the h10 g plug in is said to be best is because it provides enough power to heat the sensor.you got me thinking when you said chec smAll k 410A leaks on high sensitivity

Best Leak Detector on the Planet ! Period.
The thing that Makes these Leak Detectors Great is that They Don't Just Start going off all Willy nilly anywhere in the System. they have Awesome Repeatability. You go to the leak---it goes off. you back away---it stops. and as you repeat these steps. it is Accurate.
no irratic Goings off in non leaking area's. Great Repeatability.and they Will Find Really Tiny Leaks if you Need them To. I Work on Refrigeration Systems that only contain 8 ounces of Refrigerant sometimes.( ie: True Sandwhich Preperation Tables in Restaurants) so a 1 or 2 ounce leak a year is devastating over a 2 year Period. That's half the Refrigerant charge gone in two years.
