Pro Tip: NEVER USE THE DELETE KEY on the edit page. If you want to remove a clip, select it and hit the backspace key. Then, if you want to remove the gap as well, select the gap between clips and hit the backspace key again. I know this sounds like more work, but believe me, this will save you heart ache. The delete key does something somewhat unusual in Davinci Resolve; particularly if you are working in multiple layers. When you delete a clip off the timeline it also removes the gap without proper respect to the various layers of all the clips to the right. What that means is if you have nearly finished a project and then go back to remove 1 clip from the middle, using delete can screw up ever edit to the right of that on the timeline. If you insist on trying it, experiment carefully and be prepared to hit undo (Ctrl-Z) if you are not happy with the outcome. It may be that there is some special case that this IS what you wanted to do. But I found repeatedly that DELETE caused nothing but trouble. I have stopped using it entirely. Since I don't use the cut page at all, I am not sure how DELETE responds on that page. I am only saying this regarding the edit page.
@@glennfordsolinap8606 great input! Thank you for the added perspective. Can you please elaborate on exactly what changes to the shortcuts you suggest, and a brief how to make it happen. Much appreciated.
Yesterday I bought a course for my son, who is 13. He already took a short offline course where they made a short film from beginning to the end and he also knows pretty well Premier Pro and After Effects. He knows English very well but still sometimes its not easy to understand some educational videos for a non native speaker. So we checked the course yesterday and couldnt belive that such a perfect, well structurized and taught in perfectly understandable English course exists and at such a minimum prize!!!!! Thank you so so much!!! I want to recommend it to everybody who is interested in the film making, its really step by step explaning all what is necessary. We also got several courses from Udemy but its simply uncomparable. Dont hesitate, buy this course!
I don’t recall this channel but I am definitely impressed! The way you explained Color nodes and using Fusion for the title nodes was so simple and clear. I don’t recall anyone else mentioning “think of it as XXXX”. Your age doesn’t matter, but I do want to point out that for being a younger person, your explanations and examples are clearer than some of the more long time older people. And you don’t speak to fast so the spread to follow jus trade it that much more valuable. Kudos to you . I’m for sure a NOW subscriber because you know what you’re doing. It doesn’t matter how “PRO” someone is if no one is uninterested in listening because you can’t relate it and make it digestible. You deserve the 1 million subscribers. Appreciate you!!!!
This young man is one of the best instructors & communicators that I’ve ever been around. I was coached by some of the best basketball coaches in the nation, I’ve been around some of the best teachers, professors & educators, as well. He is outstanding and all of his punches land!! 😂 This stuff can be daunting for a 50 year old man, but I love being around all this stuff & learning continuously. Im glad I found you. I’m locked & loaded on your channel, my friend. Thank you for bringing your knowledge, abilities & giftedness to others within this forum. It is as unselfish as it is rare these days. You have a new, big, positive fan in me. Thank You!
Switching over...??? Will love you guys to dive deep into colour grading with Davinci, node tree, colour correction, colour separation and film looks thanks so much for coming over
The way you guys explain literally EVERYTHING on your channel is 100X better than 99.99% Of other Content Creators i watch... I just get it when I watch you guys... Thank You!
Is he amazing or what? He hit it out of the park with me & I responded the same way. He didn’t get all fancy or talk like he was trying to sell himself upward. This was cornbread language 101: simplicity w/o dumbing down…highest quality communication you can find. Sensational & he didn’t even have a weird voice. 😂
I’ve been using premiere pro for years now, I just used davinci resolve for my latest project and I like it so much better than premiere. Davinci seems like it was really developed by editors, for editors. The organization is so much better and everything just feels like it’s in the right place. I’ll be using resolve from now on until I find a reason not to, which I don’t think is likely. Plus the nodes are top notch.
Super new to everything related to post-production, and have minimal experience with premiere pro. Downloaded the free version of DaVinci Resolve to check it out before I buy but had no idea how to get started using it. This video just solved all of that. Thank you.
ive been using adobe for years and looking at this video, the nodes feature that everyone is so scared about is really easy to understand. cant believe i let everyone else's fear influence me to not swap sooner and ended up making me pay so much money the past three years.
Thanks for the great video, Matt! I'm a photographer, not a videographer, but want to create a video at an upcoming event and this video is exactly what I needed to start using Resolve.
In case you dont know carefull with speedramps, stabilizing etc. if you apply these to the clip before color grading and you copy and paste the grade from 1 clip to another all effects in the edit area will now be reset. a stupid bug that hasnt been fixed since davinci 16
Thanks, I needed a refresh after not using DR for a couple of years, I have too many plugins I use in FCPX but needed to color grade a project recently in DR and needed a refresh. I would really like to edit in DR but just cannot get use to it yet and missing too many plugins I use with FX factory among others.
Great video! I was used to Adobe Premiere Pro and was actually hesistant to switching to DaVinci Resolve. Now I think it's actually better in using it than Premiere. I will still need to get used to everything it has to offer, but I think it's the better choice.
Watched a few “intro” Videos to Davinci and yours really made me go “holy shit that’s awesome” and introduced better time savings features I was losing out on. Thank you
Love It. To the pint and simple. I've completely given up on Premiere Pro. Im in a decent M1Pro Macbook pro and Adobe has become so glitchy I cant use it anymore. Sucks having to go back to school but we gotta do what we gotta do.
Thanks for this. Ive used Final Cut too long to switch completely but what I find useful in DR is the ability to decode RAW files, do a quick cut and export it into Final Cut.

Normally I work with the professional Edius X but I have the DavinciRessolve 18 studio version too 👍🏻 it is really powerful but when you work for years with one editing software it is hard to change your process
lol - i hit that bottleneck with audio software so i edit my audio elsewhere and import - just a faster workfllow - but the color module and especially using the color templates (LUTS) is just fascinating
Davinci Resolve does have tutorials on their website they are all monitone school like video's on DaVinci but way more in-depth if you can stay awake to watch them there ok
Great video. But my I'm confused on one thing: Why do you change the footage speed to 0.4? Because if it's a 24fps timeline, and the footage was shot at 60fps, then it will playback at that rate at 0.4 or 40% of "actual speed" anyway. Since 24/60=.40. So why do it again? Or am I missing something? Thanks!!
Hello, so if I'm not wrong, Resolve will interpolate that video to fit that duration. So for example, if you recorded 60fps, but the duration of that video is 5s, Resolve will interpolate this as 5s. So when you have a timeline that's 24fps, that video will be displayed as 5s on the timeline and would not slow the video down. Hope that helps!
Honestly, most of the basics are not explained. Like the use of the keyboard letters, how to zoom in the timeline, etc. I use final cut and many keys have their use, I don't see that they have them here...
I have a tecnical question. Do you know any real solution for "horizon lock"? I keep waiting for a update that will make this possible. When i shoot handheld, my horizon keeps rotating clockwise and anti clockwise throughout the clip? Is there a way to keep horizon locked in place without me going to manualy keyframe every second of rotation angle? Thank you!
This video should be named “understanding DaVinci in 20 min”
Exactly 💯

This happened to me. It screwed my video. I just noticed it after on
Amen. Ripple delete will cut a lot of stuff from other tracks on your timeline and can mess you up bad.
or just change the customization keys for backspace and delete...i mean that's more work but it gets the job done...
thank you for sharing your knowledge Sir.
