I hadn't heard this song until today. At least as far as I remember though as a child on holiday in Tyrone (from Scotland) I must have heard a lot of folk songs on family get together evneings on the farm near Capagh about 50 odd years ago. Tempus fugit. A nice song and melody. Thanks for sharing this.

Best version in my humble opinion. The beautiful guitar playing compliments the great vocals from Séamus.

I second that, I've never heard anyone sing it better live or otherwise, I've had the pleasure of hearing him sing this whilst sat opposite him at a session.. The Begley family are incredibly talented and I love having a tune with them ..

I've loved this song for over 60 years... The only problem about singing it in a pub environment is getting people to keep quiet because of all the verses in the song.

What’s the song about? Who was Renardine and why was he on the run?

For those who like to sing along, here are the lyrics:
    The Mountains Of Pomeroy
    Dr. G. Sigerson
The morn was breaking bright and fair,
The lark sang in the sky,
When the maid she bound her goIden hair,
    With a blithe glance in her eye;
For, who beyond the gay green-wood,
    Was a-waiting her with joy,
Oh, who but her gallant Renardine,
    On the mountains of Pomeroy.
Full often in the dawning hour,
    Full oft in twilight brown
He met the maid in the woodland bow'r,
Where the stream comes rolling down
For they were faithful in a love
    No wars could e'er destroy.
    No tyrant's law touched Renardine,
    On the mountains of Pomeroy.
An outlawed man in a land forlorn,
He scorned to turn and fly,
But he kept the cause of freedom safe
Up on the mountains of Pomeroy
"Dear love, " she said, "l'm sore afraid,
For the foeman's force and you
They've tracked you in the lowland plain
    And all the valley through.
My kinsmen frown when you are named
    Your life they would destroy
    'Beware,' they say, 'of Renardine,
    On the mountains of Pomeroy."
An outlawed man in a land forlorn,
He scorned to turn and fly,
But kept the cause of freedom safe
Up on the mountains of Pomeroy.
"Fear not, fear not, sweetheart," he cried,
"Fear not the foe for me
No chain shall fall, whate'er betide,
On the arm that would be free!
Oh, leave your cruel kin and come,
When the lark is in the sky.
And it's with my gun I'll guard you,
    On the mountains of Pomeroy."
An outlawed man in a land forlorn,
He scorned to turn and fly,
But he kept the cause of freedom safe
Up on the mountains of Pomeroy.
The morn has come, she rose and fled
    From her cruel kin and home;
And bright the wood, and rosy red,
    And the tumbling torrent's foam.
But the mist came down and the tempest roared,
    And did all around destroy;
And a pale, drowned bride met Renardine,
    On the mountains of Pomeroy.
An outlawed man in a land forlorn,
He scorned to turn and fly,
But kept the cause of freedom safe
Up on the mountains of Pomeroy.

WE HAVE a great singer at our sessions Dennis Carmody, and I always play this, as a march to introduce us to Dennis singing Roddy McCorley. I can see by this great singing, I have been doing it an injustice. My only excuse is I learned it on whistle 70 years ago as a march🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐

a very nice performance of a beautiful song. I looked the text up and this is part of what I found:
Chorus: An outlawed man in a land forlorn
He scorned to turn and fly
But kept the cause of freedom safe
    Upon the mountains high
    first three stanzas:
The dawn was breaking bright and fair
The lark sang in the sky
When the maid she bound her golden hair
With a blithe glance in her eye
For who beyond the grey-green wood
    Was awaiting her with joy
Oh, who but her gallant Renardine
    On the mountains of Pomeroy
Full often in the dawning hour
Full oft in the twilight brown
He met the maid in the woodland bower
Where the stream comes rushing down
For they were faithful and in love
    No wars could e'er destroy
    No tyrants laws touched Renardine
    In the Mountains of Pomeroy
"My love," she said, "I'm sore afraid,
For the foeman's force and you
They've tracked you in the lowland plain
    And all the valley through
My kinsmen frown when you are named
    Your life they would destroy"
    "Beware", they say, "of Renardine
    In the Mountains of Pomeroy"
The whole song text is in the internet

And to think we never hear one song on main stream media or TV ?. Strangers still in control ? So many great songs and none to be heard 🙈

They used to play it in croke Park at half time along with other music pertaining to the two teams playing..... much better entertainment than all the blather that’s “in” now at half time. The Artane boys band...
