In 1969 my father ordered a new Chevy Kingswood Estate station wagon. Hidden headlights, woodgrain sides, roof rack, air, power windows, steering, brakes, air, 390 hp 427 with turbo 400. I took my test for driver license in that car. With 3.00 gears and serious weight it wasn't too impressive off the line, but at a 30 mph roll matting the gas pedal, it would downshift to low, the front would come up like a motorboat, and it would haul serious ass!

This car has the 335/427, which was the same as a 396/325 only bigger cubes. The 390/427 would have been the largest HP 427 available with AC. What a car!! Luckily there are enough rust-free parts cars in the South that it can be brought back (frame is pretty bad), but with all the documentation, it would be a very desirable car....Rust free cars in the South were the only way I was able to restore a '68 GTX Ohio car that was a rust bucket. My father-in-law had a 68 SS 427 with the Caprice roofline. A lighter blue with black roof. When I was younger, before he was my father-in-law, I remember this car going around town (very small town). He used to use it as a police car (he was part of a volunteer sheriff’s group which everyone called ‘The Posse’).
As a young adult, now married to one of his daughters, I sought the car out. He had long ago sold it. It was in a farmers field a few miles outside of town. My last memory of that car was seeing the SS 427 badge on the right rear trunk, sitting in the high grass. I wish now I could have recovered it.

I bought a '69 Caprice 2 door HT, 350/300, 4 speed, hide away headlights, buckets and console, AM/stereo tape, A/C, hideaways, posi, vinyl roof, "wood wheel", AIR system (California car from new) from the original owner. He wanted a '70, but they weren't going to offer buckets, so the dealer found one that was ordered and the guy cancelled so he grabbed it. I kept it for 5 years and sold it to a body shop guy (it was silver and needed a repaint). It rode great and I have only seen a very small handful of 4 speed Caprices over the years, all with 350/300 engines.
MY favorite muscle cars: 1: Studebaker Avanti with the R-2 or R-3 engine. 2: '67 Grand Prix convert with 421 HO and 4 speed. 3: 70 Superbird hemi or not. 4: '73 DeThomaso Pantera and 5: Any Chrysler 300 letter car, especially with the long ram dual quads. They were the bankers hot rods.
That car is going to be a challenge to fix, but will be worth it if you do it to keep. A lot of guys get in way over their heads and end up selling it for a loss because the old lady is tired of it sitting in the yard, never being completed. I bought a lot of cars like that in Phoenix and doing A/C was up on the roof and could see all the yards around and found many an abandoned project car and waved some cash in front of the wife and ended up getting a phone call a few days later. I had a friend with a junk yard and we would keep all of our personal stuff in a fenced in area.

I got to ride in one of these when I was in high school. My wrestling assistant coach had one of these. It was cream yellow, black interior, black vinyl top with the buckets, console and 4 speed. What a really sweet car! I thought it was cool then. But had no idea just how special it was! Back in 1970 and 1971, there were lots and lots of factory hot rods to choose from. Chevy had these cars. Ford had their 429 Cobra Jet LTD, and the Washington State Patrol had their police package 440 magnum engine equipped white Plymouth Fury with the double bubble power dome hoods on them. And believe me when I say those puppies were very fast. If you did manage to out run one, they would hunt you down and find you. Back then, the troopers knew every on in their district who had the really fast cars and knew most of them by name. My little 63 nova SS was a light snack to them. And my ‘70 Plymouth Road Runner? It was fast, but those Furies were faster, by a lot! I know that from personal experience.

Last year of H.S. To me it was a nice pristine ride. I remember this girl I was digging or rather I wanted to......never mind. She was riding in my '73, and she says to me," I like you but when are you going to stop driving your momma's car and get your own?". Oh, you ruthless b, she cut me to the bone.
