    You can pulverize the logs for spawns to grow in aquariums, more controlled fruiting evironments. Dead materials are better, less time to communicate and make deals. I'd use sawdusts from dead woods and water with mycelim water. I may or may not need a green house. I've seen some thick mushrooms indoors though.

    I'm a new subscriber since today and you guys are awsome.
    While prepairing for prepping I stumbled on your pantry video and have been whatcing your video's the rest of the day. I want to get as selfreliant as possible with the smallest footprint on mother earth as possible. So providing in my own food is my first step. I just started my vetgetable garden and made my first bottle of home made lemonade. Growing my own mushrooms is one of my goals, not sure to put them before after or simultanius on my aquaponicsproject.
    But I think you're right finding someone to teach you works for the best. So thanks for all the nice information in your video's. For a day of migraine this was an educational day.

      living Off Grid McGarvey style you can seal the ends of the logs up with pretty much anything, such as roof tar, acrylic caulk or even paint. Point is to seal asap to prevent moisture loss and preserve the wood. Seal what you have with what you have, they'll last much longer and produce better.

  • @bushcraft2012

    Great video. I like mushrooms but never considered growing them from a sustainability perspective. Sounds like they can last a number of years, so purchasing the inoculated logs may be a viable alternative to investing in the equipment to grow them yourself.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 лет назад

      I would say it is more sustainable to do it yourself. Especially since you will have to inoculate new logs every year. But I guess that depends on how many you are growing. Overall, there isn't much equipment involved but it is better to try something like this (a workshop) before investing and then finding out you don't like it or it doesn't work in your area.

    Have you tried experimenting with inoculating your own substrates and/or collecting spore prints in case you ever get it in your head to inoculate your own substrates. Not inoculating the logs, introducing the shitake spores to the sawdust that SandyCreek Farms had.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 лет назад +1

      I think that depends on the species of mushroom. We were going to do that with winecap mushrooms, but found out they require a certain type of wood (ie not cedar) so we didn't. This mushroom log was a way to try growing mushrooms. So far...none have grown. But it has been a pretty dry year.

    Hi ya Jamie! That was awesome! From what I got out of watching while u were learning. They took mushrooms that were on the logs and powdered them up then put n the holes that were drilled, I’m thinking the wax was put over the holes to prevent them from washing out during a rain, they waxed both end to help with keeping moisture in. Did I figure it out or am I wrong? Would u happen to remember the cost of a log? I noticed u leaned it up against where the fire wood is stacked, LOL, I’m sure u told ur family of it, otherwise it might become firewood. I’m glad u had fun and enjoyed the learning of it, I would have as well! Thank u PS, I’m not sure if I heard them or u say, but can any type of log get innockalated (spell check) with the mushroom spores, or must it be a certain type of wood? Again, Thank u

    Nice video and something I know quite a bit about. I noticed they were using a sawdust spawn to inoculate the logs. You can take an old log that has had lots of flushes, and using a plug drill bit, drill out plugs to inoculate other logs. Same process it is just using plugs of wood instead of sawdust to inoculate the logs. The plugs transfer the mycelia to the new log.
    If you want to try it on a smaller run you can use a paper towel roll and an oven bag. Put the paper towel roll in the oven bag and pour boiling water over it. Seal the bag and let it cool. Once cool you can open it and fill the center of the roll with spawn. The shiitake will grow through the paper towel roll. Once it is through the roll you simply stab several holes in the side of the bag. The mushrooms will sprout from the holes. It works with Shiitake and oyster mushrooms.
    You can also do it with BRF Cakes. Those use vermiculite, brown rice flour, and 1/2 pint canning jars. You will need to use your pressure cooker as an autoclave to sterilize it and you will have to have inoculation syringes.
    I have been down this rabbit hole much further than most. Ended up with a flow hood, ISO Class 100 clean room, laser particle counter, and a sheep's skin on the subject. lol
    Feel free to contact me if you have a question.

    We fertilized with mushroom compost over 10 years ago and the mycelium inoculated in our cotton wood roots. Now every fall we get tons of mushrooms. I wish I new if they were edible. Nothing is more fun than to forage for morels and oysters in the spring Do shiitake grow mostly in the fall?

      +Daisy Taylor I believe the initial fruiting will be in the fall but then they can be forced to fruit any time after that

    Have you heard of hitting the end of the logs to speed up mushroom production? If not and you are interested I will try to find the source of the info. This sounds crazy but it is for real. Love your journey.
