By standing up to the Governor and insulting him back, he immediately gains respect from him. After this scene, the Governor might continue to act in a hostile way, but if you look closely, he actually listens to what Picard tells him.

One example I can think of off the top of my head is the episode where they integrated the crazy farming colony with the holier-than-thou utopian cloners that were running out of viable clones. Imo, that would have been a good opportunity to have the crew's idea fail because they didn't understand centuries-old classism, and maybe then the episode would have actually meant something.

    Klingon calls Picard a "taHqeq," a Klingon epithet with no direct translation meaning something akin to a "lying piece of shit." Picard replies with "(something) ghuy'cha baQa," also with no direct translation, but something akin to "fuck you, goddamnit." "baQa" is like an exclamation point.

    • @DorianMichaelsIII
      @DorianMichaelsIII 8 лет назад +56

      One-- thank you for that very interesting translation, and two, am I the only one that thought that this seemed like more something *Kirk* would do (i.e. *getting right in the face of a Klingon who has insulted him* and *cussing him out in his own language*-- then again, given Kirk's history with Klingons, HE might well have just sat the governor flat on his ass with his fist) than Picard (who usually is the more diplomatic of the two)?
      Don't get me wrong, it is an *awesome* moment for Picard, and really establishes his badass Starfleet Captain cred, but it just always occurred to me that way.
      Also, another way it is potentially awesome-- Picard is well aware of the Klingon 'warrior' mindset, and knows that they won't react to diplomacy as they would a show of aggression and strength (as in: the Klingon insulted Picard, and instead of just letting it go, he *got right in his face* and *insulted him back*, in *even fouler language*;and it seemed to work-- at the end, the Klingon seems to say that with grudging respect).
      In short, Picard knew the Klingons wouldn't respond well to diplomacy, so he didn't even *try* using it.

    • @hypnometal
      @hypnometal 8 лет назад +23

      Given the fact that the Federation and the Klingon Empire are allies in this era, it makes sense to me that Picard would have even known enough about Klingon culture to know that they would appreciate being sworn at in their own language. I think with Kirk, it was a little more simplistic along the lines of, we're at war with these people, let's deal with them as little as possible.
      Case in point, Archer knew a lot more about how to engage diplomatically with the Andorians and the Tellarites than he did with the Klingons.

      Well said. Kirk might've reacted similarly, but only because he would want to show off his own power. You could even say his mindset is more Klingon like, in that way. Picard did it because, being the cultured dude he is, he knew it would regain him the respect the Klingon had just thrown into question.

    Dunno if this is legit, but the best I could find about what he said in Klingon came from one site that broke it down like this:
    Qu' (task) and vatlh (hundred) make up the basis of the word Qu'vatlh (pronounced); thus, "a hundred tasks," frustration with an excessive workload and a lack of appropriate resources. ghuy'cha' , a general invective similar to "Damn it," consists of ghuy' (an invective; "damn") and cha' (two). Finally, baQa' or b'aka (invective) indicates a frustration with one's own inability to accomplish a task.
    So, I'd take it to be some sort of phrase along the lines of "I have 100's of things to do dammit, and this shit is fucking absurd"

First of all: we have seen him deprived of his command privileges and he was still the same character. Not olny that, we've even seen him captive and under torture in one of the best chapters: chain of command, where we get a delicious reflection on points of view, will and principles. But most importantly: "being a captain" is not a personality trait! This is basic character writting.
      You're doing the same ignorant thing the writters of ST: Picard did: you take a good concept, preserve only the shell and throw everything else to the garbage, thinking that an empty shell is all there is to it.

There's a massive difference between being captured by the Cardassians and being forced to see five lights, and retiring from something you've done for most of your career, such a distinction is clearly irrelevant to you.
      If you cannot see that being a Starfleet captain and all that entails has become a part of who he is then you're beyond help, this is a man who for years heeded Kirk's advice to not let them promote him or do anything that takes him out of the captain's chair, only when he retired like a lot of veterans he didn't know what to do with himself and wasted away on his vineyard for over a decade.

    Patrick Stewart (JLP) and Edward Wiley (Gov. Vagh) played once together in 1980's Little Lord Fauntleroy

    Note that look that Riker gives Picard at 0:20. You can tell Riker is pissed off at the Klingon governor's disrespect, and it's almost as though he's asking Picard for permission to kick his ass. Picard's lack of acknowledgement, and his body language, are enough of a "no" for him.
