Steve Jobs and the iPhone reminds me of Henry Ford and the Model T. They both created iconic, game changing products but they were slow to change as the market changed. Henry Ford thought the Model T was all the car somebody would ever need and just did incremental changes to it until market share started to be lost to other car manufactures that offered new features. Steve Jobs wanted an iPhone that was one hand useable and was reluctant to embrace the bigger screens that people were wanting. Of course, when the big screen iPhone 6 came out it is the best-selling smartphone of all time. The iPhone 5 is very attractive design, but the public was wanting something bigger.
The iPhone 5 was my favorite iPhone of all time. It’s the best looking IMO and it had so many new and great features and tech. Thank you for making this, and for being one of the only people on the web to make nostalgic videos like this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The iPhone 5 in slate black was absolutely stunning, the polished chamfered edges made feel so high end. And it was so much lighter than the 4S it was shocking.
I bought a used 4S 1 month ago, unfortunately it's iCloud locked, and I can't bypass it without iBEC exploit + ipwndfu is not supported and I need to buy an Arduino just for the phone.
What a time to be alive, everything was so exciting, so new, and well, im stuck in the Apple ecosystem, ever since the ipod touch 4 came out. From a sony ericsson to iphone ever since. Tnank you for the memories.
iPhone 5's display also had better colours than iPhone 4S's. I remember noticing the improvement back in the days! Also I think the touch refresh rate was improved as well.
Yup! Peak iPhone, there. I'm glad they went back to the squared-off sides on the last few years of iPhones and iPads. There's just something about that design that looks ultra-premium, whereas the rounded sides on the mid-to-late 2010's iPhones and iPads makes them look that little bit more Fisher-Price.

Absolutely my favorite tech RUclipsr. The iPhone 5 undoubtedly had the best design of all time. With its predecessor having antenna issues and it’s successor having bendgate, the iPhone 5 was left flawless. My perfect idea of a cheaper IPhone would be if Apple put the power of an iPhone 12 or 13 into the design of and iPhone 5. Maybe not the same size, because I doubt that would be possible. But I just want a similar design.
@@S-1_24-25 I'm not saying it's smart from a business perspective. I just like the idea of Apple continuing the classic iPhone layout and design as they have been doing so far with the SE line. At the risk of being confusing, I suppose they could continue the SE line and give it the all-screen treatment and later introduce a new "classic" line bearing an iPhone 5S presence...

Apple if you're reading this, BRING BACK THE iPhone 5!!! Even iPhone 13 Mini is not as good as iPhone 5 was! 112g; no notch; physical home button; angled screen (like human eye has grown accustomed to since the dawn of cinema); no facial recognition BS; beautiful and unique icon design aesthetic; screen small enough for the thumb to reach most icons; angled edges so that it is not deliberately design to be frequently dropped; small enough to actually fit in your pocket while actually be useful enough for day to day use. And that aluminium body was sturdy enough to sustain a freefall from 8 storey building, hit the concrete and still survive! Sure, go ahead and put in some of the tech advancements like better processor, better battery, better camera, interchangeable memory storage, etc, but still keep it in iPhone 5 format. iPhone 5 was the best iPhone yet!
I miss Jobs'/Forestall's vision of an *actually intuitive* user interface. No, having buttons look like buttons and anyone of any age able to *tell what is going on* is NOT "dated". It's actually good design. I am sick of everyone saying the flat UX nightmare we have today is "better". No, no it's not. It's more PROFITABLE, cause the companies don't have to actually pay graphics designers or UI designers well anymore, but that does NOT equate to a better end user experience. it is a MUCH, MUCH WORSE one.
I had an 8GB iPhone 4s running iOS 9.3.5........... I ended up giving it to my mom as I traded up to a 5s. She liked it, had the screen replaced at some point. The guy botched the repair so the top part was crooked. The phone ended up being lost in a taxi coz she was sleep deprived and dropped it somehow.
I had iPhone 3GS, upgraded to iPhone 5 that year then when 5s came out I upgraded and gave the 5 to my son who is your age. He was so happy with his first cell phone. Sadly, he had it knocked out his hand in middle school while in the hallway between classes, and the phone was trampled and destroyed. He then got a 5c.
I have an iPhone 15 (256GB) right now and I hope I can use it until the dynamic island went under the display. So maybe in 2025 or 2026 its really just the display at the front.
Also I think the iPhone 4 is where the 12,13 and 14 have taken from as opposed to the iPhone 5 as the modern flat edge iPhones have antenna bands back in the same spot as the 4 and 4s.
I have an iPhone 8. I kept it because it was the last iPhone design to have a button on it and yes that design was used in the iPhone SE models that followed. It was my first iPhone, so I have a sentimental attachment to it as well. I moved to iPhone 11 pro next but got rid of it to upgrade to my current iPhone 13 Pro. The trade-up to the iPhone 13 Pro was half what it would have cost me to go to the 14 which had been out for a few weeks and was showing issues. I am good till 2028 which should be iPhone 17? That would place me on the Fibonacci upgrade cycle.
If u have a 13 pro you will most probably make it to 2028 and probably beyond that. But if u have the 8 that is definitely not making it to 2028 lol. iPhone 17 presumably comes out in late 2025.
People really don’t understand, that the only reason Android even got off the ground was because Android as exclusivity on Verizon the largest mobile network for like 3 years. iPhone was only on 1 network. So basically, the majority of US customers only had Android has an option. Which allowed it to get a foothold and revenue to continue. Outside of that event, it never would have come into existence.
13:07 for me a flagship samsung devicd is never as same as an iPhone even when compared to the base model iPhones. The software really makes that difference. I would rather use an iPhone SE than using a flagship S24 ultra
only on 3g. no voice over lte so it changes to 3g on calls but uses 4g for texts and data. depending on what your carrier done you may not have 3g service and may not even be able to activate the phone for text and data
The iPhone 5 was my first smartphone having had an iPod touch 4 before the screen felt huuge to me. Mine also suffered from that chipping off color. Loved the looks and was so sad when I took it out its bumper case and saw that the frame was full of white spots caused by dust or something. Back than I thought it would have aged better if I had used it without a case. Since then I still fear that that’s gonna happen in a case but it hasn’t occurred to me on other phones…
I always think I’ve read, heard and seen everything there is to read/hear/see about these devices, but then you come and bring some new connections and history. Great job, Josh! Keep it up!
Believe it or not, the Iphone 5 is the only Phone I ever had and I still use it today. Some years ago I had the battery replaced for about $30 os so. I think I'll keep it til the end of my days. It's got everything I really need: kamera, browser, email, navi, maps, music and more all in one little reliable device. And above all, it's a true design gem (unlike so many others).
I read some articles that described the black iPhone 5 as looking like “Darth Vader’s belt buckle “. From 2012 through 2020 I kept an iPhone SE form factor. Used the 5 in 2012, 5s from 2013 to 2016, then had the SE from 2016 to 2020. I loved the size of that device. Now using SE 2020. Though I’m ok with the 4.7 inch, I will never ditch the home button/fingerprint sensor
Same but I’m still using the SE. I’ve been on this form factor for 10 years now. Probably gonna wait another year or two to get a new phone cause my SE works just fine.
@@servantbyday Same here. Call me crazy but I HAVE JUST BOUGHT a brand new SE 2016 64GB for $100 and I am excited to have it as my daily driver running on iOS 15.7.2 with a battery case (absolutely must here)
@@servantbyday White gold. I wanted the Space gray was awfully hard to find but idc. It brand new, has headphone jack and a brand new battery with a working home button. Idk about you but The floating virtual assisted touch home button sucks given the small screen estate. Plus, the replacement cost of the working home button and Touch ID sensor are more than $100 so this was a no brainer.
I was in Japan when it launched I remember seeing it on the train, it looked so sleek and cool. I still think it was the biggest upgrade in design they ever did.
I enjoy this video, thank you. The iPhone 5 was the very first one I bought brand new and I loved it. When iOS 7 came out I was so disappointed with it I ended up selling my iPhone 5 (32GB) for a Samsung Galaxy S3. I hated iOS 7 very much haha
This was my first iPhone and First Smartphone! After years of iPod touches, I was finally able to treat myself to an iPhone as an early high school graduation present and I was in love. I did love the feel of the 4S but I remember the lighting connector was a new feature and I wanted to be ahead of the curve. Unfortunately I didn’t get the 32GB at the time and it only lasted a year before it ran out of space
The greatest iPhone design and probably my favourite iPhone ever. Most people say the iPhone 5S is the better designed phone but I never loved the colour options (i.e the space grey iPhone 5S had nothing on the slate iPhone 5).

I don’t think so, it’s more of a hybrid of both.
Well, it's 2024, and I don't know any iphone users personally that are not ECSTATIC about the switch to USB C! I loathe lightning!
No it’s not. The SE 2 and 3 have one
@@emilsecker7881 And they are just updated iPhone 8's
@@PWingert1966 my point still stands
@@emilsecker7881 I rewrote the comment to be more accurate. Thanks for the inspiration.
Depends on where you live my 5g in my small little town of Fillmore is so garbage it’s unusable I had to switch to lte
I love your videos
best way to jailbreak?
still got my second iphone5 waiting for me to load cool booter on for ios6 so i can use some classic games instead of a 4s
13:07 for me a flagship samsung devicd is never as same as an iPhone even when compared to the base model iPhones. The software really makes that difference. I would rather use an iPhone SE than using a flagship S24 ultra
The ICONIC. ❤
Phone was Very Ahead of its Time!
Steve Jobs will be missed, Apple Dies along with him tbh.
I have the iPhone 5 slate black
Not sure if it turns i wont try since its not mine but a family member told me to hang on to it
Not sure why you’d hang onto it if it’s not yours
21:48: Where can I get that iPhone 14 Pro Wallpaper?
I miss iOS 6 so much
i'm surprised no one is complaining that it didn't get ios 17
I have the iPhone 8
Biggest takeaway: thyme is not a spice sir. Next biggest: this was the phone. I never had it, always wanted it, and I still want it.
Oh I wish Apple brought back aluminum back phones…
My friend Timothy tay will upgrade to the iPhone 17
When Steve Jobs was still around, apple really was at the forefront of tech design.
The Iphone X should’ve been the change to usb-c
25:22
Can you still make calls?
only on 3g. no voice over lte so it changes to 3g on calls but uses 4g for texts and data. depending on what your carrier done you may not have 3g service and may not even be able to activate the phone for text and data
Do you play Dokkan?
He was right, Apple stopped innovating many many years ago
Lmao he said "the connector for the next decade" and apple was stubborn enough to make it the case
No I’m with Tim Cook phones should be a one handed device
“Caddy-gory.” ❤❤❤
this is what I am looking for: almost one hour of gadget documentary and review. Subscribed!
For me the 5 and 5s still the most beautiful form factor that apple made.
The 4 and 5 phones were the best design.
These retrospective videos are great. Keep up the good work man!
An amazing iPhone with the perfect size and functionality. 4 inches is like what's 5-5.5 inches now in the world of huge phones.
Yup shout out to iPhone mini line, shame on apple for discontinuing it
@@nibbax7772 we don’t know that yet. They’re making an SE4, but even that’s a 6.1 inch display which is huge
@@CrazyPanda688 “they’re making an SE 4” we don’t know that either lmao. Quit treating rumours like fact
@@emilsecker7881 they’re literally developing a new SE LMAO 🤡
Nah, 6 inches is the average nowadays
You commented with that phone?
That’s great. It’s too bad a Verizon dropped Support for it.
I just bought and iPhone 5 last night! Also the iPod 5.5. 5th gen everything seems to be top tier.
@@9852323 same! User of a 2016 SE here. 13 mini would be my next choice but this is still solid. Especially the 128gb model
@@servantbyday Same here. Call me crazy but I HAVE JUST BOUGHT a brand new SE 2016 64GB for $100 and I am excited to have it as my daily driver running on iOS 15.7.2 with a battery case (absolutely must here)
@@edgaryzen4925 That’s a great deal! Apple still officially replaces batteries in these too if you need one for only $49. What color?
Oh the iPhone 5, the best design
Favorite black comment if agreed
The greatest iPhone design and probably my favourite iPhone ever. Most people say the iPhone 5S is the better designed phone but I never loved the colour options (i.e the space grey iPhone 5S had nothing on the slate iPhone 5).
