Someone call the Funk Police!
I'm so glad Ian is in the SBL team, it's really cool to observe how two phenomenal players and teachers approach the same things slightly differently. There's a real benefit for us as viewers being able to see those variations and apply them to our own playing.
Jazz is the TEACHER but funk is the PREACHER!😊
yes !
Nice!
Makes sense to me
I hate these cutesy little sayings that are supposed to be all folksy sage wisdom and whatnot...except this one - I really liked that one, dude!!
Too cool (for school?), can I use it?
And by that I mean, for free, can I use it FOR FREE?!
@@JamesDavisakaRemguy do it!
Average musicians focus on which notes they play. Great musicians focus on how they play each note. I find this especially applicable to instruments like bass. Killer demonstration!
We need more videos of Scott and Ian together.
They look like a couple of buddies chilling together around their basses, and it happened to be a camera in that room.
It makes the video really friendly and kinda warm.
I love your videos
Agreed they’re so perfect together. Maybe we gotta bully one to move to the others’ country 🤔
Totally agree! At the same time, their video editing is on such a high level as well. Really fun to watch them teach together 😃
@@AndreasOxholm Oh yeah, all the prod is well done, and it shows in the quality of the videos, it's just that Ian and Scott are giving this bff vibe that I love
Soooo true , so re ok relaxed and natural.
Scott and Ian get on so well and it really comes across in these videos how much fun they are having. Love this! ❤️
A lovely dynamic!
Funk Bass has got to be my favorite style to play in. Nothing but groove and making the foot tap, it's so infectious. Cheers for this one guys.
Especially when playing with other good musicians. You can funkify damn near any style and it’s fun when you can bully your drummer, guitaries, keys player etc into joining you 😂
Drums keep the beat, bass moves the feet 😁
Funk is why we PLAY bass! I mean, who picks up a bass and says, “You know, i feel like hammering out a bunch of straight-eights of nothing but the root notes, and never wavering. Ever. Oh, sorry all you metal heads out there- IM KIDDING!!! I know there are some incredible rock bassists out there who lay down some awesome grooves. I just haven’t heard ‘em- D’OH! I DID IT AGAIN!! So sorry, SOOO sorry, really! I don’t know what’s come over me, I grew up on Rock & Roll. Great bass players, like Entwistle, Squire, Bruce, Waters, McCartney, Timothy Smothers... You know, YO-YO MAN! (Wasn’t he a cello player? And Chinese?) The Defence rests. Or in Canada: The Defense rests...eh?”
That skit at the end was gold😭😭
Ian was such an amazing add to this channel. Keep it up!
Hearing about Ian learning about the UK is so much of what I'm going through. I move to the UK on the 20th of Dec and I'm learning the same things Ian is learning. I've only seen HP I've not heard of Daddys. I love you guys in the same video I love the "did we just become best friends", "yep" vide.
I lived in the UK for four years and I haven't heard of Daddys either.. But I am struggling to find the words to explain what HP sauce tastes like 😄
Sharon should do a 'How To Make Your Edits Funky'. They were legitimately hilarious. Thanks for making me giggle.
Hahaha! Admittedly, this video was edited by Dan, another editor at SBL. We'll pass on the compliment!
@@devinebass cheers!
God, the dynamic between Scott and Ian is sooooooo good!
🧡🧡🧡
Scott and Ian are the best!!!!!!!!!!
Jaco NEVER slapped, but could be funky as hell. Just solid rhythm and mastery of the dynamics - particularly ghost notes.
Inserting a high octave note can funk things up, too.
I was thinking the exact same thing!!!
Jaco was more of a Jazz style Bassist, which makes sense he wasn't a slap player that we know of. But knowing and understanding slap doesn't take away from your arsenal it just adds to it.
Another great lesson from two great teachers! ❤❤
I'm beginning to look forward to the Sting at the end so much!
YES!
Very inspirational. So much to learn!
There is only one rule for funk and you both missed it. " You gotta hit me with the one ", Bootsy.
Brilliant video, so fun!!! I’m loving the “couch trivia?” at the end. Cheers
Fun vid but... Missing 2 essential elements, BOTH essential to soulquarians style grooves:
1 - Note vs pause length / staccato playing
2 - Laying back in the bar
I really enjoy how much fun , you guys have while teaching the bass on your channel ! Take care guys , you rock !
Big up Timothy!
Thanks for the great video! I love how you two have no egos and compliment each other’s strengths.
Thanks for checking it out dude!
Guys, the reason these videos are doing better than ‘shorts’ is we can actually use thse vids to practice since you can cast these. The shorts can not be casted.
I know that channels create shorts to gain followers, but for tutorial channels it does the opposite. 😎
Nice, would love to see something about the pocket and syncopation too
Loving these Scott and Ian videos!
Great to hear man, more to come!
I just picked a bass after 21 years of playing guitar (and eyeing basses aswell) and your channel has been invaluable. Awesome job, awesome playing and, just as important, you have an awesome vibe to your videos!
Thanks!
That is awesome to hear dude! Thanks for tuning in!
The chemistry in these videos are so contagious
So awesome to hear Julien! Thanks for tuning in!
That yellow F bass is the sickest!
This lession will help many bassist be better no one will show you Thanks!!
You guys are SO GOOD TOGETHER 🎸🤠
This is close to watching a comedy show but learning a lot at the same time 😄 More videos of Scott and Ian together!!
🧡🧡🧡
Wonderful, thanks guys!
loving that beanie and bass match
Great stuff!
A couple of things that I have picked up and use over the years. I don't think the first one was talked about in the video even though they were using this little technique. I didn't know if it has a proper name, but I call it pre-muting. The trick is to pluck the string a millisecond before depressing it on the fret. It takes just a little practice to get the right plucking force under control. Because it can be so dynamically percussive, it is important to be accurate rhythmically. Of course varying the intensity adds a lot. If you really want to cut through, lay into that pre-mute extra hard.
Second: When I'm learning or composing a funk phrase or pattern, sometimes I will mute the strings with my right hand and just play the rhythm of the notes in the phrase by strumming or s;lapping the muted strings. This way I can focus on the feel, the groove ,and the swing. This is especially effective playing along with the drum track. As an aside, a successful funk cover band that I played with back in the day used this "rhythm stick" method when learning tunes before playing the notes in order to get super tight
This is such a great video, had me smiling all throughout 😊
Yes dude! So great to hear!
Awsome video!!👍👍👊
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I actually owe my mom, who played a lot of Motown records on our giant living room turntable, for teaching me about funk as a kid. So when I eventually picked up the bass, there was a lot of instinctual stuff, like phrasing and ghost notes, already drilled into me without even knowing what they were called. Thanks, mom. 😃
I didn't have the advantage of parents who played a lot of music, but when I was a teenager and learning guitar I got into stuff like Motown and Memphis soul. Probably because of the Blues Brothers. So when I started playing bass, a lot of that style was already in my brain. That's the lesson here, a lot of the feel comes from listening to music and trying to copy it.
Big up to the moms who play Motown to their kids! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Loved this - learned so much… but (compulsively) wanted it to be a 4 bar phrase! Added a low B, A before the final G!!
Awesome! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
HP all the way Scott. BTW great video, you guys always make great content and have a great laugh along the way.
Very nice bass lesson
Thanks dude! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This FBass sounds so sick. Would be great if you'd exchanged basses so we see how much of tone is in the hands and how much in the grands 🙂
Ha. All depends on taste. For me JB is a sound winner. Btw i’m not JB fan. All best Man. ;-)
@@grzegorzkurek9604 Well said! I'm a huge Fender JB fan btw, I own like 3 of them, but this FBass is something else 🟡 Cheers m8!
That intro was hilarious, cheers guys
The confusion in my brain having made up arbitrary statures for Scott and Ian, then seeing this proof that Ian is in fact a bigger person than Scott… is significant. I guess Ian just has more baby nrg than Scott. Thank you for allowing this irrelevant comment.
You need to get Scott Ian on a podcast so the world can experience Scott Ian Interview w/ Ian and Scott
🤯🤯🤯
Omg..your skits Crack me up! Educationally fun!
I love simple bass lines, not too fond of pringles. Great vid
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
the best thing on youtube 😎🔥
What did the Mayo say to the Mustard?.."Hey! I'm Dressing!" :)
Very cool, guys! I've seen people do them, but never play the wiggles on my bass lines. I guess I'll have to try and add that to my tool kit. Time to get funky! Thanks!
Get wiggling dude!
A very comprehensive approach! Yet, I would dare to say that all these articulations (except slap) are just pure BLUES language. Learn the Blues articulation in deep and you are ready to go for all these gernes that derived from - including Funk ofcourse
That's a good point! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I can't believe how wonderful of a bassist Louis C.K. is!!
Bro, when Scott's hand just grew a bunch of fingers there, I was so thrown off for a millisecond 😂😂😂🤌
🤣🤣🤣
Very nice little stuffs to add some taste to our bass coocking !!! 👩🍳👩🍳👩🍳
👨🍳👨🍳👨🍳
Watching Star Wars at the end…. Awesome😃
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Loved the outro!🤣
🧡🧡🧡
The "Norfolk Hand" at 1:31 made me giggle. HP is much better than Daddies!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
1:30
Was not expecting that 🤣😂
😉😉🤣🤣
Here I thought I funked up but I guess I didn't funk enough. A bit of slap here, some ghost notes there, and I wound up in a band. They don't have to know that while they're playing metal I'm layin down the funk. Another great vid!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I'm glad Ian is going to funk jail for deliberately not being funky. It's one thing to be unfunky, but to do it with volition is truly wrong.
He's a great man and I expect he'll come out of funk jail with a greater sense of social responsibility.
The IRL Scott & Ian videos are killer!
The funk is strong with this one
👍 great.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Cool hat 👍
Most of all, I loved the beast mode !!! 🤣😂
OK, the 8 fingers was freaky! LOL
Ian is the master of the pick ⛏️ Scott brings the funk simply by having his yellow F bass 🍌
💛🙌🏻💛
please SBL, exactly which Fender Jazz bass Ian plays in the video? I can feel the sound! Cheers!
It's a 1978 Fender Jazz Bass
Scott, you so cold, man!! 6:04.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This is a real bromance.. Nice to see.. I am wondering if Scott's strings are old or if it is the glove that gives the deader tone..
The gloves don't have any affect on the sound dude! That's just the lushness of that beautiful F-Bass 💛😉
HP every time. Daddy’s sauce sounds like something which requires therapy afterwards
🤣🤣🤣
You can also add string bending and vibrato to the list of articulations.
Can't believe we missed them!
@@devinebass Its all good. Maybe put them in another video someday. Now I don't know about Ian, but Scott has some wonderful vibrato.
you could have also added string bends into the mix but i think that could come under dynamics
That's true!!
Can you make a video on primus please
Thanks guys !
Wot Scott ! No yellow glove to match the bass & hat ? 😜 l know focal dystonia is no laughing matter, l contracted it myself a few years ago, but l did come up with a (hopefully) a humorous abbreviation (whilst writing this comment) : - 'Foc.Dys. !'.
Love you guys & the Bass Grannies (at the outro) rule !
The Beach Boys - California Girls 🧡
@@devinebass ?
Scott what glove is that on your hand, you use to play ?
Do Chris Wood! The funkiest bass player ever, doesn't get the credit. "Little Walter Rides Again" with John Scofield is perfect.
So many little intricacies that are more implied amongst the band. Finishing each other's lines but never playing on top of each other.
It's all musical elements expressed in its full glory.
love the video guys thanks ! sorry maybe to ask this but why Scott wear a glove ? :3 thanks for the answer !
Scott has focal dystonia, he explains that in the video here ruclips.net/video/wOVGrGBeqiI/видео.html
Hi Guys, what is the model of Scott’s yellow bass? It is awesome
That's an F-Bass BN5 dude!
HP Sauce all the way,! Ah I remember the disappointment when mum brought 'Daddy's sauce'.(giggity) out the shopping bag,,, hard times
Funk yes!
#1.. bass space
HP Sauce most definitely!
🤎🤎🤎
Mustard is indeed a sauce. Depending on who you ask, mayonnaise is considered one of the "mother" sauces, foundational sauces that form the basis for many others.
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you guys for all excellent advices but.... Talking funky... Where's THE ONE and space ? Don't fake the funk 😁
80% of US High School students can not find Funkytown on a map.
Why is nobody remarking on the most important part of this? Red or brown sauce? HP all the way!
Hi! I too wear a glove but good quality is hard to come by. Any suggestions please?
Lol, Ian! That was awesomely un-funky.
1:30 that FREAKED me out for a moment… wtf(ingers)
🤣🤣🤣
What a video. So nice. I am an idiot, and yet I managed to learn a whole lot today. I cannot believe I shortly sounded like you guys. Thank you so much. It was so funny, i couldn't tell what part was actually scripted and what was so naturally improvised: you should seriously consider acting for a while. Just for fun.
My funk tip is to make space and play in a way that the snare drum punches through.
What's the song called Scott uses as example that simple basslines can also be cool? I can't quite catch what he's saying. At 15:40
The Beach Boys - California Girls 🧡
@@devinebass Cheers!
I need to know where Ian got his hat.
no one, but two elderly bass nerds: "eight! uhahahahahahaha!!!!"
🤣🤣🤣
Do I need to lower my action in order to get that raspy sound?
We've got the video just for you dude - ruclips.net/video/bGtjMNtr4Nk/видео.html
Daddies you heathens!!! 😂😂😂
If you wanna see someone beating a bass, smashing into oblivion, just look at Larry Graham. I don't think even Louis Johnson slapped that hard. But this is how you end up breaking strings and stuff. He played very loudly as well, some of his runs are actually violent. It's hard to play them any other way, because it's fast and loud thumping, all it is. Larry brings a lot of pain, trying to emulate him, same with Louis Johnson. Sure you can play it softer, but they didn't lol. Marcus Miller plays pretty hard as well, try playing Power softly, you can't do it. You still have to hit like 300 ghost notes, with some finger just for that song, it's gonna hurt your thumb. I don't know how you guys can just keep going for hours and hours, at any rate. We all heard the stories about the bloody thumbs, this is what happens if you don't allow yourself time to heal, seems to happen to a lot of people. All the players I like seem to play pretty fast or hard or both, even the girls. I bet Ida Neilson has some nasty callouses. I think you guys should play even more aggressively, to be 100% honest you guys are both super talented bassists, funk is not very hard. There's a certain edgyness to funky music, or boldness. It comes with knowing that you're following the lead and you're in the pocket, they had total confidence of expression. It can actually be a lot heavier than metal for bass at times, I think it is. I never broke strings playing metal before, not until I started playing along with Stevie Wonder, did this kind of thing happen. Because it's physically more going on with my strings to play, there's more volume, and Gospel is the heaviest music of all. Rock seems pretty easy compared to most of this, for the bassist anyways. Rock has lots of rests, changes and verses, the bass is usually more subdued. With funky music the bass is basically the lead instrument, the guitar is more subdued, so you need to really step into the spotlight as a bassist.
If you play the notes and your timing is spot on, it's not going to be lame. Btw the stuff you guys are playing at the beginning, there's nothing basic funk about that. I hate to say this but, you guys need to talk to someone I know. It's way, way more simple than this, it's very very simple. Funk is always a derivative of Blues though, not Classical, Rock or anything else at all. So Funk should follow a Blues progression, right guys ?. This is like rule #1, I figured out. All of the chords in this video, should just follow some type of Blues progression, it's critical of Funk bass. Thundercat, blood on the floor, that is a Blues progression, and in this case it's Funky, it's in F I think. He plays the same thing, over and over and over again, this rule #2 is to play the same thing over and over again.
There's not much you can do differently with funk bass, so your timing needs to be perfect any way it is. The only people who I think actually understand this are mostly playing in Funk bands, right now, these people never seem confused about it. For example, Joe Dart is not a funk bassist, I can hear the difference all the Jazz he played and other influences. Last month someone just messaged me, to tell me Joe Dart is a mostly a funk bassist, I was like oh...really ?. Means nobody understands what it is anymore, not really. There's a cultural gap that's growing between the genres. I am one of the Funk police, and I arrest people and I lock them away.
Hey dude! You bring up some interesting points about the essence of funk bass and its connection to blues progressions. 🎸🎷 It's a groove that's evolved over time, and it's great to see your passion for keeping the funk alive! 🕺🎶
HP all day, e'eryday!
