This video is fantastic, an absolute time capsule of footage. I’m 40 now and lived In Southampton all my life, great to see it how it used to be, brought back lots of memories. Great video
I absolutely love this - a trip down memory lane. My late father's boat is briefly captured on her side to mooring in Ocean Village. That boat was named after me and I was thrilled and moved to spot her. This video has brought back so many happy memories of years gone by. Thank you so much for posting this on here!
I was born in Southampton and spent the first 49 years of my life there, leaving in 2015. Thank you for sharing this video, i havent been back to England since leaving but it had changed a lot by 2015.
Thank you for commenting. I moved away in 2012 and visit the city centre roughly once every two years. It's interesting seeing how much changes in that time - but disappointing to see how much the "new" Bargate development/building site hasn't changed in years!
@Quagmi I don't know what has happened there, but I am planning to pop over sometime this year. I lived in Woolston which was being heavily developed at the time, I moved before the huge apartments were built
I was too young to remember 1993 but I remember a couple of years later hearing Oxygen IV in the shopping centre just as in this video. Spent a lot of time in Ocean Village, in that gem shop, the little arcade room, and the big arcade up top. Simpler, less stressful times I wish I could revisit, if only to hang out with my dad who took us, who died a few years ago. Over a decade later off to Bevois Valley and the Dungeon to begin many a cheap Weds night. Videos like this show how time moves so quickly, very emotion inducing. Thanks for uploading it
I love that these video bring back so many memories for people! I used to go to Ocean Village a lot when I was a teenager, and into my twenties. Loved Way Out West and the antique arcade too. I used to go in there most times when I went into town. It was always busy, so I was surprised when they closed it! Sounds like the council shot themselves and the homeless in the foot by increasing the rent
Wow fascinating bit of film. Before going on the beer, we used to kickstart our weekend evenings at Ocean Village in the arcade which was half way down on the left, with Laser Quest above it. I remember the T-shirt shop at the front corner outside, bit colourful shop with Iron Maiden images all over the place. Even went to that cinema to watch The Fugitive. Had a mate who lived in the apartments near by, really great times, i was trying to see if i could ID anyone's car i knew, Ahh well, i'd turn back the clock in a heartbeat.
I remember in the 80s when Ocean Village first opened, it was so cool with great modern shops. It was so quiet though, they quickly closed down and then place seemed like a ghost town. I also remember Bud's bar near the Mayflower theatre - that was pretty cool too in the mid-80s.
Happy memories! Canutes Pavilion and Bargate Centre now no more and within such a short time of being built. Pirelli and Vospers both created many employment opportunities and sadly missed. The City looked far cleaner with no unsightly graffiti everywhere. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comment. Yes those were different times. I lived in Botley, but would often come into town on the bus to hang out in Ocean Village with my mates. We used to go to the cinema and old fashioned arcade, then later it was Way Out West and some of the bars and restaurants. I liked the surf clothes shops in The Bargate Centre, and Sega Park. I also couldn't resist going into GAME to see what deals they had, and what new SNES games were out.
That sounds great. I've seen them adverised, but never managed to see them play. My friend's Dad was one of the people who owned/ran Schooners bar, and we used to go there after our carpentry course at Soton College.
I studied at Southampton Tech College in St Mary's Street between 1982-1984. Henry's Records, Weasels Records, Underground Records, The Shirt King Shop, Kingsland Market, The Oddfellows Arms, Masons Arms are all places I fondly remember. Sometimes after college would cross Itchen Bridge to Floaters club which was the old floating bridge or go to the Solent Suite beneath Southampton Guildhall for a rock disco. DJ Hammy was a legend back in those days for an eclectic range of music. Happy Days!
