Thanks a lot for the video, it was fascinating! As a few points of constructive criticism, I'd really wish the editing was simpler (no chat message, no facebook live overlay on the interviews, etc). As it is now, it really distracts from the narration without bringing anything to the viewer. Another thing you could do that would be great is to add the credits of artworks you show when they are one screen. I really loved some of those paintings, but as it is now I have no way to find them again and/or learn more about them. That said, I want to stress that I still think your videos are great and I tremendously enjoyed them :)
As other commenter pointed out, the editing is really all over the place and distracts from the great audio content. My suggestion is to bring more fluidity to the videos, only one aesthetic theme to each video, and no wikipedia please.
I understand why these artist expressed themselves the way they did, they had as was stated anxiety, fears and melancholic feelings, thoughts etc. However, to live in that world and not step out is miserable. Although as clearly seen lots of great art was produced through those themes. Munch, the Brotherhood, Gauguin lots of talent and emotion brought about universal connections.
Another wonderful production and very informative!! I love the work of *Odilon Redon...* he has some really odd works but his vibrant dreamlike florals are my favorites!
Thankyou for the concise Introductory Taster Video to Symbolism and Artists. This style of art resonates so i will do further research for my Art Course.
Visual studies student here. The video was informative and interesting. Unlike the other comments, I find the editing and visuals to be just fine. It isn't disruptive and doesn't have any takeaways from the information taught either. Keep doing what you guys are doing, the video was great
Pre-Raphaelite art is amazing! I think I love symbolist art even better than the religious imagery of the Renaissance. Thank you for this wonderful video.
The info here is great, but the editing is all over the place. I'm not convinced that stuff like Dante messaging Rodin really did anything for the story other than temporarily distract me from it while I tried to read the text bubbles. The art historian lady around 2:17 has way lower audio than the rest of the video and was it really necessary to show the mouse clicking play? And a large part of the piece about Evelyn De Morgan was footage of scrolling down a webpage with her art? It's fine if the world maps you're showing are coming from google maps, but having the actual google maps search bar and generic info on London in the frame was a bit much. I also don't understand why a random paragraph with a play bar above it is scrolling across the Gaugin painting around 1:48. The list goes on. It felt very cluttered visually.
I am marveled by these works and the interpretations. I am surprised how little though, the influences of mental illness and depravity are mentioned or tend to be minimized.
Very informative as usual. After watching this video, I thought about lots of symbolic meanings, especially those I have trouble understanding, even in real life. hehe.. This video is full of charming content.. Thanks. 😏
@@CuriousMuse Thank you for raving about me as usual. Sure ,I am Terpsichore Lee from lovely South Korea, hehe 😁 My other eight sisters are all dear muses too.. Trust me!😉 They are all long time listeners and lurkers of your channel. They are all too shy, though..hehe "Where have you been all my life, dear Terpsichore Lee ? " said Curious Muse. " You can dance all you want here. No one is going to stymie your passion for dancing!."😂
A painting of Theseus symbolizes maybe: wisdom, the husband of Medea, the abductor of women, one who reconciled political differences....What does The Scream symbolize? It isn't a metaphor like a rose symbolizes romance,.I don't think it symbolizes anything. It directly reports (as great artists always do with their observations) the feeling we have when we panic...we may not show our feeling to others but The Scream does. And shows how the world is distorted by panic. What else is Edvard reporting to/for us?
Rachmaninoff springs to mind immediately. Especially his "Isle of the Dead" which was inspired by a painting shown in this very video. It is as atmospheric as it is dreamlike. Debussy and Mahler fit the bill and Glazunov is an honorable mention.
I’m glad that the narrator states that Munch’s masterpiece “The Scream” is (primarily) considered expressionism. I suppose that one could call it “symbolism” also, but I think that you’d be stretching it a bit.
Ah...Curios Muse - you failed to include two other women Symbolist: The English / Mexican Painter - Leonora Carrington, and Spanish Painter - Remedios Varos!
Isn't every artwork a kind of symbolism? I mean the artist have a own way to express what he want to say. In that he use the painting as an Symbol about what he is wanting to say...
Nah, the 'normal' art is usually about conveying a message to the viewer, while the symbolism is completely abstract and subjective, you can interpret it how you want
I’d say over the course of his life, from 1863 until 1944, Munch moved boldly from naturalism to Impressionism, and from Symbolism to his own unique brand of Expressionism 😉
I am learning so much!!!!! keep doing this pls!!
That's really good :) . That's the plan!
As a Norwegian, I appreciate that Edvard Munch is pronounced correctly.

Exactly this
I agree. The content is simple and to the point but the visuals are so distracting
I totally agree! ESPECIALLY about the screen with all the art credits! I wish all channels would do that

You are so welcome! 😍
I love Evelyn DeMorgan, Gustave Moreau and Paul Gauguin
Can you make a video on Moreau? I can't find much on him in my search
Great suggestion, thank you - we'll add it to our content pipeline and hopefully will make a video about Gustave Moreau!
This is great. It would be great for you to address Imagist poets.
The work of the Swiss Symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin deserved a mention in this short overview.
I like that Melancholia was shown! Haha, I never knew about Evelyn de Morgan before. I love her work! I learned something new 😄🥳

Hi thanks for sharing this wonderful video! Is there any Symbolism in Contemporary Art which is different with Symbolism in Modern Art period?
To be honest, not really. The video talks about symbolism as the 19th century *art movement* and not a ‘thing’ that’s featured in contemporary art
The info here is great, but the editing is all over the place. I'm not convinced that stuff like Dante messaging Rodin really did anything for the story other than temporarily distract me from it while I tried to read the text bubbles. Thank you for such a detailed feedaback! We'll discuss as a team and see how we can make our production less "heavy" on effects.
@@CuriousMuse I disagree, I thought it made it more interesting and immersive ! :)
@@lorettaavery1498 thank you :) now sounds like we need to find a good balance 😅

8:10, it looks like the photo of Zora in the original 'Bladerunner' movie. inspired by the painting? or the universe lapping over ?
Who is the lad on horseback in the thumbnail? Artist/year? Was this the inspiration for the equestrian statue in Peggy G's collection in Venice?
Found it! Petrov-Vodkin 1912
Bathing of a Red Horse. Now I get it, the pre-revolutionary symbolism
Correct! 👍🏻
Thank you
I need to have my own Art Gallery here in Jamaica.

Most would say it symbolises the anxiety of the human condition 🫣 ….
Very entertaining, I love the playful style of relating the gorgeous art from bygone era to modern social media apps 😆🥰🎨
So nice to hear! 🙏🏻
Great viseo. Thank you sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great video prciate it

Well done! But obviously Gaugin meant the old woman to look to the past, and the baby to the future.

Yes, the way the video connected the questions to characters felt quite arbitrary, at least for the last two

High renaissance works please if you haven’t already 🤗🤗🤗
Sounds good! 👍🏻
These artists are not easy to understand, and we need some help from the people who have studied painting throughout time.
love the art video’s
And we have loooooots of them! 🎉🎉🎉
Why can't I save this to favorites?
Me when I see the word symbolism: turi ip ip
How does Klimt fits into all of these?
Klimt's work was inspired by a number of art movements in addition to Symbolism, including Impressionism and Art Nouveau.
Who were some of the symbolist composers and what pieces of music should I look for?
Rachmaninoff springs to mind immediately. Especially his "Isle of the Dead" which was inspired by a painting shown in this very video. It is as atmospheric as it is dreamlike. Debussy and Mahler fit the bill and Glazunov is an honorable mention.
Symbolism is the best . Deep thinkers
👍🏻

There is no mention of the Russian Symbolists.
It deserves a video on its own 🙏🏻
❤

Dark Souls and Elden Ring are pretty symbolist
We love these games 😍
😻
symbolism come from the word symbol - live and learn
Ah...Curios Muse - you failed to include two other women Symbolist: The English / Mexican Painter - Leonora Carrington, and Spanish Painter - Remedios Varos!
Thank you! The video is too short to celebrate all the amazing symbolist women but maybe we should make a whole new video about these two 😊
0:06 is that Kristen Dunst?
The video uses the term 'English artists' while simultaneously placing a marker on Scotland :/
Thank you for the feedback 🙏🏻- it’s placed on the UK as a country but agree it should have been placed geographically closer to England 😅
0:14 Ahem, I think we all know the answer to that question.
That’s the answer?
tbh, dada seem to be more mysterious
Isn't every artwork a kind of symbolism? I mean the artist have a own way to express what he want to say. In that he use the painting as an Symbol about what he is wanting to say...
It’s slightly different - we talk about symbolism movement in this video which wasn’t about symbols in each painting
Nah, the 'normal' art is usually about conveying a message to the viewer, while the symbolism is completely abstract and subjective, you can interpret it how you want
Symbolic work is less about expressing what you want to say and instead expressing what can't be said.
Idk how you manage to think every painting is a symbol is beyond me ....
Try expressionsim!
Coming soon! 😉
Actually Munch is expressionism not symbolism.
I’d say over the course of his life, from 1863 until 1944, Munch moved boldly from naturalism to Impressionism, and from Symbolism to his own unique brand of Expressionism 😉
I only have three minutes. I won't be able to look. you do not have a link for three minutes, but rather one.
🫣
Are you shure that the concept Is "mysterious"?
Depends on the viewer and to to some it is?
"English" artists? You dropped a pin in central Scotland! When are you people going to learn the difference between the UK and England??? FFS.
😅🙏🏻
My thoughts as well, although I wouldn't be quite as aggressive about it
@@LeDingueDeJeuxVideos Maybe that would depend on how many 1000's of time you come across it.

...the hilarious way in which the narrator pronounces "femme fatale" is a telling symptom about the quality of this production...

The author doesn't include The German Secessionist Franz Stuck, a major contributor to the movement and a serious omission.
