San Francisco after the devastating earthquake in 1906 like you've never seen before in color! [HD]

  • Over the past month this has been one of our major film restoration projects. Most films about the 1906 earth quake are of extremely poor quality. We have let our restoration and colorization skills run free on that material in an attempt to bring it back to new life. Obviously miracles can not be expected, but by motion-stabilizing, speed-correcting, A.I. enhancing and A.I. colorizing these films, it has become more bareable to watch (at least we think so).
    The 1906 earth quake occured along the infamous San Andreas vault and struck the San Francisco area early in the morning of the 18th of April 1906. The magnitude of the quake has been estimated to be 7.9 on the Richter scale. More than 3,000 people died and over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. This film shows the tragic aftermath whereby survivors are trying to simply survive among the rubble. A few days later the army brought in supplies. People can be seen waiting in queues for food and being temporarily housed in tent camps that were erected to house about 20.000 people. Many fled the city by ferry to cross the bay to (presumed) safer regions. One remarkable thing stands out while watching this footage and that is how dignified the San Franciscans appear to behave and how well-dressed many of them still are.
    The film also shows early activities to start removing remains of buildings and rubble. One famous scene shows a journey by car through Market Street right up to the Ferry building at the harbour. This footage has often been compared with another film that was shot just days before the earth quake and can be found on dozens of channels on RUclips, even in colorized 4K 60fps format.
    Far more information is available on the web and especially on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_Sa...

    My family survived this, most of them anyways. My great grandfather left for work that morning and was never seen again. Being a native of San Francisco and growing up there, I got to talk to people who were there that morning. One was a fire man who fought the fire. An old woman who remember the rebuilding and all the horses that died do that job. An author noted he saw no crying or despair, people worked together and helped one another. My other great grandfather was a fisherman and he went to sea and filled his boat with fish and fed anyone who needed food, when that was gone, he went back for more.

    *Please note that this is very old film. The B&W source footage was of extremely poor quality* . Therefore this film might not fulfil all your expectations as regards quality. Nevertheless, we thought we should release it in view of its historic significance. The earth quake was the worst natural disaster that the American continent has ever experienced in human history.

      There has already been at least one, though. In 1936 MGM released a melodramatic, highly-fictionalized cinematic account of the earthquake (aptly titled "San Francisco") that featured what were for the time ground-breaking practical effects recreating the quake/fire's destruction of the city and a leading cast made-up of Golden Age stars Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Jeanette MacDonald. Outside of this long-forgotten piece of Old Hollywood schmaltz there has yet to be a blockbuster retelling of the '06 SF quake, which is surprising given the many dramatic elements of that event that could easily serve as creative well-springs for "epic" directors like James Cameron or Steve Spielberg. Perhaps the SF Earthquake has simply receded too far into our historic consciousness by now for any modern director to risk developing an expensive project depicting a 110+ yr. old natural disaster that has long since been surpassed in terms of loss of life and social relevance by more recent major tragedies?

    • @timmartin7664
      @timmartin7664 Год назад

      @@Ryan-on5on Well It's about time, people in America get a refresher course in history 101. This story is bigger than Titanic, in the number of deaths and cost to rebuild the city. I think San Francisco was one of the 10th largest cities in the U. S at that time. I believe with the right director and cast, it could be a real money maker.

    • @timmartin7664
      @timmartin7664 Год назад

      @@Ryan-on5on That one doesn't count. Who wants to see a movie made in 1936. I'm talking about an epic movie with a big buget. That wins an Academy award for best special effects and all-star cast and 2022 cinematography, that blows the socks off the audience. They could recreate the earthquake with stunning detail and depict San Francisco, as it was in 1906.

    • @Ryan-on5on
      @Ryan-on5on Год назад +1

      @@timmartin7664 Agreed, but I just don't think the concept would seem worthwhile to Hollywood execs in this age of big-concept multiverse Marvel films and Blockbuster franchise reboots. The last time a major studio released a film set against the backdrop of a historical calamity was what....2001's Pearl Harbor? And that was on the receding waves of a post-Titanic epic movie frenzy that brought us such "classics" as the unintentional comedy Battleship Earth, Roland Emmerich's muddled CGI mess Godzilla (1998), and Mel Gibson's "rah-rah America" propaganda piece The Patriot. For better or worse the age of those type of movies has come and gone. I hate to be a Debbie-downer, but the only kind of serious screen adaptation of the 1906 Earthquake we can realistically hope for would be a miniseries or short film produced by HBO, Netflix, or Amazon; only those streaming companies have the clout and resources to take on such a gamble.

    What many people do not know is: the fire that erupted after the quake spread so quickly (due to ruptured water mains, yes) but also because the Bay Area was experiencing a rather robust offshore wind (called "Santa Ana" winds in So Cal). In fact, daytime temperatures for a several days after the quake were in the 80's throughout the Bay Area (even in San Francisco) due to the warm winds.

    I find it very strange that there are no people walking around stunned, with their few little possessions in a satchel. No one with cartloads of furniture salvaged from ruined buildings. Not one looks dis-sheveled or lost, with nowhere to go.
    These people are all dressed up and out on tour in the big city that was ! They have vendors selling hot dogs and everyone is going about their business. How is it that the street cars are still running ? Buildings falling and the huge fires never touched a power line. It's like one big tourist jam !
    Another thing is, there are no children, to speak of. I think I saw 3 in total. What's wrong with this picture is not that it is old, or grainy, or scratched a bit. The problem with it is .... It doesn't make sense !

I'm curious if any of these shots were taken on Market Street where many have watched the trolley (I believe) make it's way up the street just 4 days before this tragedy happened. At 27:09 , I wonder if that could possibly be Market Street. Or possibly 33:06 basing it off of the silhouette of the building at the end of the street. I'm trying to remember what that building is called, I want to say the ferry station but I'm wiru 😀 and 6y0 I wish that they were able to tell where each of these shots were taken and listed at the bottom of the screen and possibly some before and after photos. And I ask myself, when will James Cameron direct and produce a movie about the San Francisco earthquake, on the same scale as Titanic? The special effects alone would be breath taking with today's Cinematic technology. I predict it would surpass Titanic with the right cast. Leonardo DiCaprio would make a convincing Mayor Eugene Schmitz and Jeremy Renner as General Frederick Funston and perhaps cast Emma Watson or Kristen Stewart as a romantic love interest to some fine young leading man yet to be revealed.

    • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent

      Events like the San Fransico Earthquake being done in a way by someone like James Cameron would be significant and potentially life changing due to the amount of devastation and horror the actual quake caused. However studios would likely avoid it unless it was as a action blockbuster due to the fact it might horrify people especially as Los Angeles and the rest of So Cal is currently on San Andrea's hitlist. Hence why you might get a action/disaster movie like San Andrea's but not a Disaster Drama like Titanic.
      However now that its been over a century and currently right now political and social division is so high, perhaps it right now is a good time to make a good drama/disaster movie with the 1906 quake. Maybe it might give some empathy back to people in the to see how utterly devastating a real life event happened to a American city and its people.

    Amazing film work, considering how primitive the movie cameras were at the time. Hand held they were heavy and had to be on tripods. Film magazines often ran off wound up springs, or in some cases hand cranked. 1905 was the year Ford began automobile production, only a few Bi-planes existed. There was no refrigeration yet in house-holds, just ice boxes, cooled by blocks of ice. Electricity existed but wasn't in everyone's homes yet. Phones were for the wealthy and businesses. Indoor plumbing wasn't universal. Even when times were better, people didn't bathe every day. In home hot water tanks weren't common, bathing required a stove to heat kettles of water. Cable cars required a coal fired engine, to turn the in-ground spools of cable. Homes were still illuminated by candles & sometimes natural gas lines, came to homes for lighting, cooking and heating.

      1960s-1980s changed everything with a move to a new style and fashion, wild hair style took the place of head wear. That said, since the 2000s things have settled down to a more urban relaxed fashion. People still do wear hats but it is more practical like baseball caps to keep the heat off your head, beanies in winter to keep your head warm or if you are out in the sun or desert than cowboy or straw style hats are pretty common. You also have people that do like the higher fashion of head wear but mostly seen as pretentious/hippy but not that common. There is also the wearing of hooded shirts/jackets but it can be seen as counter culture or trying to hide identity (criminal)

    Something about this is just "off". Normally after a disaster takes place there's people looking disheveled, traumatized, covered in soot, rummaging through rubble, the injured needing assistance etc. The fact that people are apparently just wandering around aimlessly really doesn't make any sense. The City looks worse than Dresden did after days of aerial bombing, unless the peculiar decision to use dynamite to stop the spread of fire is fully to blame. Real intelligent strategy there.

      I agree, these scenes are not completely as one would expect, especially people walking around in their best clothes, looking reasonably cheerful. One explanation is that it was probably filmed many days or even weeks after the desaster. All the fires have been put out, a lot of rubble removed and obviously no dead or seriously injured people in the streets. Some footage might have been staged, but overall I think not.

      I think since this was probably several days after the quake people were like “OK, time to just pick up the pieces (literally) and move on.” And also back in those days, people, particularly those belonging to the upper classes, were raised not to show much emotion in front of others but to just be stoic and dignified. And the boneheaded decision to use dynamite to stop the fires definitely did more damage than good, and probably was responsible for a large amount of the overall devastation. They may also have already started demolishing and clearing away the buildings that were too badly damaged to be repaired.

      I agree with everything you said. But I think maybe the dynamite idea was an act of desperation. Maybe they had the idea of fighting fire with fire. I was raised in rural Mississippi, and when we had forest fires, first we’d build a fire trail to create a barrier, then we would create a fire to meet the forest fire to burn itself out. Works like a charm. Not saying that was their train of thought, but who knows?

      If you knew more than a nanogram about history, few people had what we call "casual clothing" back then. When the quake hit people pretty much were left with the clothes they were wearing or could salvage from the rubble. There were tent encampments where both the rich and poor lived together because ALL of them homeless.
      And there bloody well WAS a fire after the quake. It ruptured gas and water lines. Once a fire started there was no water to put it out. The military was called in and dynamited big stretches of buildings as firebreaks. It's all documented even if you'd prefer swallowing conspiracy bs.
