I am a beginner drummer. Using a beginner kit that we got for my son probably 4 years ago. I play probably 8-10 hrs a week. My son probably less before he went off to school. I just got a new set of heads hoping to improve the sound, but as I am new I came to watch this video before replacing them just to get some tips. Great video. Thanks!
I’m a beginner drummer , and I’m loving it , should have started 20 yrs ago instead of playing leaf guitar , bro your instructional video is awesome , thank you so much , changed my 1st set of batters , thumbs up !
I decided to re-tune my snare and did exactly what you did. Tune it tight and work my way down. Thanks for your advice. I change my drumheads when I decide to record new songs along with my band or by myself. In other cases, I change them every 3-4 months.
Awesome job Jared! One thing that amazes me is how often you need to replace your heads when you’re on a tour. Something about exposing the drums to different climates on a daily basis really ages the heads. I find I can’t go much more than 3-4 shows without changing them! When I’m back in town however I try to keep it down to every month or so if I need them sounding top notch.
The heads expand when they get hotter and contract when they get cooler. This stretching back and forth fatigues the material in the heads, making them get out of tune and aging faster.
Haven’t changed my heads in 8 years lmao. I started playing drum set when I was 6 and now I’m 14 so I used my own money to buy new drum heads for my snares and toms. I changed and tuned them and they sound so good now
I recently purchased a hardly used Pearl 5 piece set. The drums were perfect except the snare. The coating was worn off the batter head and the sound was way off. I did some research and found this video. I changed out the original Pearl batter head with an Evans heavyweight coated head. This video made it so easy! I was so impressed with the outcome, and it sounds amazing! Thank you Jared Falk. I liked Jared’s manner of instruction so much that I just took advantage of the 12 year anniversary deal at Drumeo! I have so much to learn!
Likes your drumhead change tutorial I am just starting to play again I am 63 but played on my brother's drum set at age 10-13 then 18-24 then gave up! now trying again!
Just changed my 1st set of heads on my toms.picked up my 1st drum set used on marketplace a few weeks back.enjoying learning very much. I always thought it was going to require a little more work to change them heads..i will take that over a new guitar setup any day.
You are a great teacher! I so appreciate your tutorial video. I'm a mom drummer, and I haven't changed drum batter heads in forever, but my teen is starting to play my drum set and I want them to sound better. Thank you for your wonderful instructions!
I just picked up a set of drums for my six-year-old because he is showing interest in playing. I am a guitarist, but I’ve always kind of dabbled around the drums. Never had to actually change a drumhead, but I’m looking forward to doing it for the first time lol.
I play drums in church, so I like to change the heads once a year and depending on the sound I want for that year I’ll try different coatings. With the exception of the snare, I like to keep it the same.
The editor had some fun with this one, thanks, well done :) Enjoyed it a lot, even though I do know how to change drumheads. Drumeo is doing things wonderfully
I definitely need to change my head. It's been on since the year dot. I suspect there's a technical difficulty, though, as soon as my brain is detached... ... on a serious note, though, I just got a snare drum and stand to use as an atabal with my Basque txistu, and it has a small split in the resonant head, which is why I'm here, to see whether replacement or Teflon tape is the better option. I'm entirely new to drums.
This is the first time I’ve ever paid for head! I’m a mechanical engineer by trade so I was looking for torque specs in inch pounds to tighten up my new snare head. First head ever replaced. If you had a data sheet that would be great. But thanks for the video. I did learn something! What I found out from your video is you have no more knowledge than I do when replacing parts. So good job! But to who???
It depends on the amount of shows and rehearsals that I do with my band . If I do shows and rehearsals massively then I usually change heads technically every six months on my Pearl Reference 14x6.5 20 ply snare .... Likewise , I had used EVANS HD DRY before and after six months of heavy playing, when I changed that to EVANS HEAVYWEIGHT, it actually made me feel that I have chosen the best head ever but would love to try hydraulic blue too... THANKS JARED for such an informative video anyways ... Cheers
Mashalla thank you brother! Got a 2nd had snare and one of the bolts gradually dislodged while I was out marching so the nuts are all inside now.... Adding nicely to the snare effect no doubt, but the wire clip is not anchored!!😅
Guilty! Like a lot of comments stated, i waited a long time and to say the least the sound was getting boring no matter what I did. Thank you for this tutorial it was a great reminder from an experienced drummer. Thank you!😅
Hi guys, great job as usual! I am a guitarist who follow your channel, because I like to learn different perspectives from other instruments. How about inviting Chris Whitten for a lesson?
I came here to find out how to change heads and the detail I needed wasn’t shown at all. The removal detail was shot from above and the reattachment was on time lapse. I need these minutes back.
I stored my drums in my storage room for 10 years and never replaced the drumheads, now at 2020 i unstored the drums and began playing on it again with the same untuned drumheads, surprisingly it still sounds playable hehe =/
The last time I changed my drumeheads was 6 years ago but now they are fine. I think that this is due to the fact that I play the dums 2 hours a week. Do I really have to replace them or, since there condition is still good, not?
i played for like 5 years only like in the past 2 years have i been playing more then 7 hours a week and my snare batter head finally broke so of to fix that. also my drums sound fine even after 5 years and know i’m wondering if i should change it all even though it sounds fine edit: i play rock and pop
Do you think it would be a good idea to wait for my batter head to come in the mail? I just bought a brand new (snare-side) resonance head. I already took both heads completely off. I mine as well wait. Right?
I have not changed my resonance head for 10 years. So, I'm hoping to get a cleaner-sounding snare sound. I think I should tune my head to a pitch this time.
I haven't changed my snare drumheads in 6 years. LOL! but my snare gets dirty becuz of my drum sticks due to practice.. But my snare drum heads also got dirtier but it also being unbreakable and strong snare heads in my opinion was Remo.
I change my tom heads probably less frequently than I should (only about once a year or less), my kick drum gets similar treatment, but my snare gets new heads every couple of months because that's about how often they tend to break.
I've been meaning to change my heads since my parents got me my first crap drumset years ago. I kinda stopped playing because I realized you have to have grease and various tools, also need to make sure that the heads are in good shape (which I just never got around to). Been doing a lot of Quad/rudimental drumming and Some keyboard things lately.
It's much more fun to play when the drum kit sounds great. You don't _have to_ have grease, it's just a bit better. The only things you need is a drum key and patience!
@@Fred_P Yeah I realize especially that if you dont play for hours every day they dont need to be replaced too often, but in general my set is just bad. The shells are low quality, heads are low quality, cymbals are very bad too. It would just be a lot of work to make it sound even okay, itd probably be more worth it to upgrade the set. I've heard of things like sanding the shells and such but are there any other ways to mod a really bad set to make it reasonably okay?
@@77kungfupanda If the shells are circular and not oval and the edges are straight (check if they lie flush against a flat surface and you can't see any light coming through anywhere) and the hoops are not bent and they stay in tune, you can get a pretty good sound out of them with new heads and good tuning. There is nothing you can do about bad cymbals though. If you want to buy new cymbals, you don't have to bust the bank but make sure to buy bronze cymbals and not brass cymbals. The low end cymbals are often brass and they really don't sound good.
Hey Drumeo team, something I always wondered. When the time comes that you need to change both heads, resonance and batter. How would you proceed for the tuning starting with both fresh heads at the same time ? Cause sometimes I get confused that I won't find the right tuning with the wrong resonance or on the other side, won't find the right resonance if I get the wrong tuning for me. Thanks, Anthony.
Ehh that might be too long but like Jared said, there's plenty of factors to when you should change your heads. I haven't changed my drum heads since March or so of this year and I'm gonna probably replace them next month.
No offense, I love your videos, but if you're not recording or something I wouldn't bother changing the heads unless they're obviously dented. Especially not every 90 days when you play for half an hour a day. They will work absolutely fine for a long time. They will lose some freshness after maybe half a year or so, but thats a MINOR change in sound. Hell I just bought a Acrolite with a head from the 70s and it still sounds killer.
