***** That's the whole point of the elegy of emptiness. It creates a shell that resembles the soul of the one who played it. That's the statues resemble Darmani and Mikau instead of Goron aand Zora Link. Link falls down holes all the time. In TP he gets shot down from a canon when he was in the City in the Sky. In Wind Waker he gets thrown a few miles across the ocean, once by the Helmaroc King and the second time when he raised the Tower of the Gods from the ocean. In Skyward Sword he falls down to the ground with an entire Island. Termina is also confirmed to be a parallel version of hyrule, it is not ''Link's Purgatory'' as MatPat falsely claimed. Not to mention that the existence of the Hero's Shade in TP completely destroys this ridiculous theory.

+Magus Perdé and did they really need a timeline explaining what would happen if the player lost to Ganon in Ocarina of time and then gave up and ragequit?
when it comes down to it, Zelda is a great series of games that people love. The fact that so many people dedicate extra time to try and expand on the game is proof of that.
And this is why they call it a LEGEND! There are many different versions of legends because people don't tell the same story, and it also changes throughout the generations. And that is why there are so many different Zelda games because everybody tells the legend in there own way.
Lassi Kinnunen Putting the stories into the same timeline is impossible because most off the Zelda games (except for the obvious sequels) already take place at the same time because they are just different versions of the same legend.
Mistr Dee I never said I liked the timeline and I agree they didn't used to care (the 3 timeline split is way too convoluted for it to have been planned in advance) so thanks for the fanboy comment, hopefully you don't get so pointlessly worked up over minor issues in real life. Even if Nintendo didn't used to care about it they clearly do now, Skyward Sword's storyline is pretty much dedicated to setting up the timeline with all the curse stuff.
A theory that no one has thought of saying. What if each Zelda game is the same? Its all just retellings of the same story, through different story tellers, much like how old ancient myths were the same story at its root, just the details were changed from teller to teller because it was all word of mouth. I doubt it would be true, but its just an interesting way to take the story line.
Comparing this video to the Kingdom Hearts timeline video is night and day, you can tell James was actually passionate about these games, when he never even played a KH game before
TheBlackHikikomoriGamer it makes sense that it is at the end of the timeline when you see the tech that was in the trailer and the demo of the game that they played.

+Rikk Wolf I have always thought since they announced the historia this was a dumb concept. Sure some Zelda games are sequels to each other but not all of them even as a teenager i knew that idk why people wanted a timeline so bad
Funny how he said many Zelda fans couldn't bear the thought of another prequel (14:30). Skyward Sword, which came out a couple years after this, is a prequel to The Minish Cap and is also the earliest game on the official timeline, which also came out a couple years after this video
@@WhoElseButZane This video was made before Nintendo even released an official, comprehensive timeline of the series. But now that it's happened, there's no need to bother making a follow-up video, since he'd just be repeating what was in Hyrule Historia anyway. The most he could do is point out plot holes and inconsistencies between installments.
I personally think that every zelda game has its own story. It's called LEGEND of zelda. NOTE THE WORD LEGEND. Every game is a legend told in different ways. Well that's what I think anyway.
I dont mind Time Line theories; I've come up with quite a few myself over the years for Zelda. But there was always one little word that kept me from trying to make every little detail work in the Zelda universe and time line - "Legend." These games aren't detailed events in the history of Hyrule, they are legends that are told. Sure, if we wanted to put together a bible of Hyrule Legends documenting the events of the mythical land and its hero's we could, but they would still be just that. LEGENDS. And I think that's my favorite part about the series; yes they appear to be connected in some way but the details are fuzzy and each legend is supposed to be it's own unique tale. And thats one of the reasons I love it so much. great episode, AVGN! :)
This has been debunked many times. There is a "bible" of Zelda. It's called the Hyrule Historia. Also, just because the word "legend" is in the title doesn't mean anything.
Speaking in 2024, I have a theory. The series is called The LEGEND of Zelda. Key word being Legend. Maybe there is no connectivity. Maybe they're all just a retelling of the same story by different ppl.
The intro story from a Link to the Past is actually the story of Ocarina of Time. The 7 sages locking Ganon away is the whole quest. Therefore Link to the past happened far after OoT. Linking to the past is a way to connect back to that original time in OoT.
The way I always saw it, there may not even be a linear timeline since it is a legend. Legends are interpreted in many different ways which is why there are always different weapons and some names carry over. It’s a legend told in many different ways
I'm rewatching all 200 episodes all the way through after Mike talked about some of the specifics of his involvement with the series. I believe he said he wrote this one while James was under the weather.
Herr der Zeiten I did, but I didn't have a youtube account back then, or if I did, it was a different one. Look at my youtube videos and compare what you see there to the original photo in the video. If you need any further proof, I have other later photos taken in the same place. I don't live in that house anymore, and I got rid of a lot of my stuff minus the powerglove, but you can definitely see the resemblance, and I can easily take more.
I just prefer to think that there is one "Legend of Zelda" and each game is a retelling of that legend, with different elements changed. But seriously, I don't really care if there actually is a timeline... It's just a freaking game! lol
But even that games internal timeline doesn't make sense. It's stated that 10,000 years ago Hyrule beat Ganon with Link, Zelda, the heroes, and all their advanced technology. So what the hell happened to the advanced society? Where did all the technology go? Why did they have to dig it up and figure out how it worked again? It makes no sense because it's never explained what happened to Hyrule after they beat Ganon. If they beat him why did the civilization vanish?
@@C24U_ maybe most of their technology was destroyed in the war against Ganon? I mean, we know they succeeded, but we don't know how heavy were the casualties. Besides, a lot can happen in 10000 years; no civilization on Earth has come even close to lasting that long, so...
@@C24U_ It's literally stated in the lore that the King of Hyrule from 10,000 years ago grew afraid of the technology and banned it while cracking down hard on the Sheikah to make them abandon it. As to why everyone forgot about it. 10, 000 years is older than the entirety of human recorded history and you probably can't tell me everything that existed in the Babylonian empire can you?
Since the official timeline only came to satisfy the fans, I guess you could still have your own interpretation. Personally I feel that Skyward Sword followed by Ocarina of Time followed by A Link to the Past could make up a pretty solid story together on their own
I think that skyward sword was the first one since thats how the master sword was made, then its minish cap since he acquires his hat, and then comes ocarina of time where he beats ganon and goes back in time to do all that other stuff. ( Just my theory )

+ricardo I think they changed their mind, it's clear from the official timeline's plot holes that they didn't plan it out in advance, but the recent games (especially Skyward Sword) makes it seem like they care more about the timeline now.
Cause who needs a story in a beloved video game franchise. amirit?
I don't care if I killed ganon and he somehow comes back. I like to bury my sword in his face no matter what

I love JAMES and all and i respect the living legend BUT, he sometimes should know better than to say some kind of things regardding videogames - which should be his stuff lready -, as Videogames are literally by modern humanity respected as movies... i'm not even trying to be a try hard millenial wise man, is something you can just literaly feel if you're well inmerzed in both communities.
An accurate representation of the timeline situation before HH came along. This video is a precious piece of history.
10:48. Sweeeet! James used my video in this AVGN episode (number of rupees, number of hearts, and items being used are exactly the same). I feel so honored that one of my favorite videogame reviewers used one of my videos! Thank you so much!
Now we have Skyward Sword, Spirit Tracks, Link Between Worlds, Hyrule Warriors, Triforce Heroes, and Breath of the Wild. We need an update, Nerd!
He doesn't need to update it. Nintendo already released a complete timeline for the series.
I originally watched this when I was about 15. I didn't have literary any experience of these games. This gave me the awe to start them. So James, as a fellow James, thank you. This started a love of mine that I cannot express in words, and you were the one to start it. As games were a an influential thing in your life, you were in mine. From cinema, to older games, you really influenced me a lot growing up. For that, I thank you.
Wow, Hyrule Historia really threw a wrench into most people‘s speculations 😂
It was actually very similar to what AVGN created.
This may still be my favorite AVGN video. You can really tell James has a love for this franchise
I want to know what James thinks of Breath of the Wild
Xcyper33 same
he loves it. he talked about it in a recent video I think on James and Mike Mondays or something. Pretty sure he said he completed every single shrine.
I know Mike was basically begging for it before they even announced it
Josh McIver Completing every shrine in Breath of the Wild is an adventure in itself. It literally felt like I was Link going through that crap.
@@HLHReviews He actually comments on it in his newest video on Majora's Mask. I think he likes it!

Mortal Kombat

I get what you're trying to say, but Godzilla movies Follow a linear path. At least until "Godzilla: Destroy All monsters" In the movie it's made clear that it's in the future. So the movie after that is a continuation on the movie before destroy all monsters. After that the continue on that storyline until they Recton all of the stories after the original several times before they can reach destroy all monsters in the chronological timeline. Eventually The retcon it a final time and continue on until Godzilla final wars. But I have no fucking clue where the 2014 movie comes in to apply for the movies that are coming out later like the Toho one next year. Hope that helps!
Eric Kleppel wow I'm dumb! I am a Godzilla fanboy yet I didn't know that! Thank you! And I think 2014 ether comes after King of the Monsters and the other movies never happened or King Of the Monsters never happened.
CoolGaminginc You mess up the list a bit. Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster came after Mothra vs Godzilla, not before. Mothra vs Godzilla came out after King Kong vs Godzilla.
Robert Ramos oh yeah! Well when you're trying too list all of these movies your bound to get something wrong.
CoolGaminginc I guess that's true.
Video about chronology is ironically released years after being created
“Or it’ll go back to when link and Zelda were the Adam and Eve of hyrule”
Too true, avgn.
Love this video, cant believe this is 10 years old now
"Maybe it will go back to Link and Zelda being the Adam and Eve of Hyrule"
This video was before Skyward Sword right? Because if it was then this is hilarious
Heh. The Hyrule Historia created a timeline a few years after this video. The split timeline is now canon.
I guess you could say it's... GANON CANON!
(Am I gonna get sued?)
TlalocGaming Nope. Just gonna get fired out of an Ooccoo cannon.
***** I see what you did there!
Lol
I can't believe this was recorded almost 20 years ago
Nintendo used that idea that link and Zelda are the Adam and Eve of hyrule

According to Nintendo themselves, there are 3 Timelines, They SHOULD make a New Zelda game set AFTER Adventure of Link.
Maybe the new Zelda coming in 2016?
+Conrado Javier
Yes, but that timeline was retconed from pressure of the fans. It's not like they created that timeline as they were making the games.

They though it was the one that made the most sense... with the time travel in Ocarina of time fucking shit up in 3 alternate reality

Thanks, James! Read your book, and have watched (and rewatched) all your AVGN movies.
"Well exccuuuusseeee me" I replayed that 6 times.
when it comes down to it, Zelda is a great series of games that people love. The fact that so many people dedicate extra time to try and expand on the game is proof of that.
I wonder how James felt about them making ANOTHER prequel with Skyward Sword. Id love to see him do an update to this video talking about it.
It's been 10 years since the upload, and now there's Breath of the Wild and people waiting for the actual sequel of BotW!
And this is why they call it a LEGEND!
There are many different versions of legends because people don't tell the same story, and it also changes throughout the generations. And that is why there are so many different Zelda games because everybody tells the legend in there own way.
never thought it , that way .
interesting !
logico
Lassi Kinnunen Putting the stories into the same timeline is impossible because most off the Zelda games (except for the obvious sequels) already take place at the same time because they are just different versions of the same legend.
MY ENTIRE WORLD HAS BEEN CHANGED
Mistr Dee
I never said I liked the timeline and I agree they didn't used to care (the 3 timeline split is way too convoluted for it to have been planned in advance) so thanks for the fanboy comment, hopefully you don't get so pointlessly worked up over minor issues in real life.
Same as godzilla movie
17:35 Ssssshhhhhh. We don't acknowledge their existence.
Comparing this video to the Kingdom Hearts timeline video is night and day, you can tell James was actually passionate about these games, when he never even played a KH game before
Ah, the days when Nintendo hadn't revealed the official Zelda timeline.
Skyward Sword was yet another prequel, lol
SodaGamer HD Isn't the Skyward Sword Manga established as non-cannon? I don't believe it goes with the timeline
Maybe Breath of the Wild turn out being another prequel.
No it actually is said to happen some where after twilight princess
TheBlackHikikomoriGamer it makes sense that it is at the end of the timeline when you see the tech that was in the trailer and the demo of the game that they played.
Jose Colella this is the 3rd time i have seen you comment
9:52 The customized Zelda 3 game cover is probably the best part of the video for me.
I’d love to see an updated timeline with all the games that have come out since this was originally put out. It would be interesting to see the Nerd’s updated take on it😊
A Link to the Past. Almost 30 years old, has had millions of games come after it and still, it’s one of the best games ever made!
...and we go back EVEN further with Skyward Sword. A sequel to Zelda II with the SAME Link please!
Wrong
i miss read the comment, and thought you where saying skyward sword was after zelda2
read Hyrule Historia
I own it. Read it front to back. You can borrow it if you need to.

No need. Nintendo already released an official timeline.
@@Bauglir100 who cares about theirs? I want the Nerd to do it

@@Bauglir100…
I personally think that every zelda game has its own story. It's called LEGEND of zelda. NOTE THE WORD LEGEND. Every game is a legend told in different ways. Well that's what I think anyway.
yep. exactly.
I like to think of each game as the story of link being told by a different person.
I.......I dont know what to say
Hal Jordan Agreed
Chairman Meow too bad the series is not called the legend of Link.
I think Skyward Sword's excuse kind of works for it all. Still like he says there doesn't seem to be any sort of planned timeline.
Coop Cheese A Zelda "Bible" already exists, it's called Hyrule Historia.
What about the SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI timeline?
What? No?
Okay, I'll just go sit back down and wait for Persona 5.
Hang in there bro! We're almost there :'V
Damn this is old
Hey now you can wait for SMT5
The intro story from a Link to the Past is actually the story of Ocarina of Time. The 7 sages locking Ganon away is the whole quest. Therefore Link to the past happened far after OoT. Linking to the past is a way to connect back to that original time in OoT.
Fun fact: “A Link to the Past” is called “Triforce of the Gods” in Japan.
14:13 Holy shit, AVGN totally called Skyward Sword before it happened!
This video is almost 15 years old. Wow.
I'm in this video!!!! Well, a picture of me is... go to 12:42

***** wtf???
I love the chronologically confused episodes the nerd should do some more some day
I just prefer to think that there is one "Legend of Zelda" and each game is a retelling of that legend, with different elements changed.
But seriously, I don't really care if there actually is a timeline... It's just a freaking game! lol
Zelda and link end up being the Adam and Eve of hyrule 5 years after this video was made
At least Breath Of The Wild is apparently set in the future, so far in the future that all other games are considered legends. . . Like the title.
I think an updated video is in order.
