One tip the magnetic lasso. Make a duplicate layer of the one you want to lasso and turn up the contrast up or make a mask where the differences between the colours are really big. Then apply the magnettic lasso on to that. It will probably make a way better selection. Then, select the layer with the proper (unscrewed lol) image and do whatever you want with it. Atleast, thats what I learned to do with Photoshop
I love your tutorials! I'm just doing my first steps with Affinity and your tutorials helps me so much. Thank you and please continue with this great work.

Just found your channel. Love it! As a side note, your screen recording is so easy to see and clear. What software do you use to record and at what resolution?
Thanks, Olivio! The magnetic tool doesn't work for me either. If the contrast is high enough for it to work, I'd probably pick the paint brush selection tool. But the vector/lasso tool is great! EDIT! Thanks so much for the intersection feature lesson! I never tried it or knew what it did. That is a great way to make some really cool selections/shapes for sure!

There is an issue with the lasso tool that prevented me from buying affinty foto ( same happensin designer in pixel mode ) Depending on the speed you have drawn your selection , when you then fill it , it will be either jagged ( slowly drawn selection ) or smooth ( fast drawn selection ) Just do this , set antialiasing ON and feather off Now draw a triangle ( slowly ) and colour it with the brush , result jagged edges NOw draw you selection fast ( same setting ) and fill it with the brush, the result =smooth edges This jitter issue is something that is noticeable on touchscreen devices and since it also happen son their desktop programs I assume they used the same code . I want to have total control over selections and therefore I draw them slowly ( with jitter ,jagged result ) ,really a shame Photoshop does not have this issue , slowly drawn selections are always smooth when filled
That is very interesting. I never noticed that! It seems to me that PS is using a kind of vector line or simulated selection and then renders it to the actual pixels after you let go of the selection tool, while AP tries to plot a way though the pixels. go to PS and soon in to 900% and make a selection. The Lasso tool creates a smooth line (Independent from the pixels) and then calculates a path later, based on the pixels
Olivio...as far as I can see, there is no way in affinity to do a rough selection AROUND an object and it automatically makes the selection for you, as per Adobe. I think this is called 'magnetic lasso' in Photoshop. Isn't there the an affinity equivalent? It'd be much easier to be able to draw around an object and the programme makes an assessment of the edges for you
Thank you for quick response. I am currently in AD, I don't think there is a quick selection tool that I am looking for. Imagine you want to select the subject of a portrait photo, on PS I would drag a quick rectangle over the subject and it would make an assessment of whatever was inside of the rectangle and make a quick selection . My experience with the magnetic lasso in affinity is that it snaps the edges only when you walk it through near where the edges are, it is not capable of making an assessment if you merely draw a shape around whatever it is you want to select? Apologies
Thank you, Echt. Well, yes, but humans make mistakes and in some of my videos it's a good chance to show some errors to avoid too. So i rather leave them in. I rather often find with other videos that, when i learn something new, i make mistakes and the video didn't show me how to handle them, because it's "perfect" so i don't know how to solve or avoid it and am left with "ok, what now" kind of situation ;)
@@OlivioSarikas yes but slightly shorter and more abrupt. However, I wouldn't worry, your English is excellent and it doesn't detract from another great tutorial. Thanks!

Thank you, Aratxe. Welcome to Affinity Photo. Hope you are having fun with it :)
Perfect video to explain all the selection modes, thank you!!!
YESS. Beautifully explained, thank you!
Thank you I was looking for this.
Very useful information. Thanks for the video.
Excellent explanation [ .... I understand your English very well ... and I'm from the South, in Florida, USA ~ : +) ]
Thank you. You are the true Mozart of Affinity tutors.

Thank you, John Collins. That's a pretty cool trick with the mouse. I have to check that out :)
thanks John -- have not tried that but yes, that works perfectly, Cool Tip!!
Danke für das Video. Werde das Lasso jetzt wohl öfter benutzen. Konnte bis heute nicht soviel damit anfangen.
Hallo Sabine, danke! Ja, ich nutze das inzwische auch wieder sehr oft. Der Selection Brush ist enfach nicht das wahre in AP ;)
Nice work!! please make more for Affinity Photo

Hello, I don't seem to have the "Type" header on the screen top left hand side? I cannot find the polygonal selection tool either?
are you sure you are in the photo editing persona? not the raw developer persona?

please keep saying it that way. :-)

Wait, so the Lasso tool is not available in Affinity Designer????
Once I've lassoed my image using polygonal option what do I press to remove it from its background?
you either copy your selection to a new layer or delete the rest by inverting your selection and hitting the delete key
@@OlivioSarikas how do i invert it?
Is there a plugin you can get to make the process easier?

AP has a magnetic lasso too. You need to select the lasso tool (freehand selection tool), then in to top tool bar change it to magnetic mode ;)
