- When a nuclear reactor is used as the primary heat source, the resulting thermal power plant is called a nuclear power plant. André Pienaar spoke at the Energy Indaba in Cape Town last week about the potential of this new generation of reactors for South Africa and the rest of the continent.
In the future, communities, municipalities and private companies may be able to purchase their own small, modular reactors, he says.
The chief scientist of X-Energy is Eben Mulder, who previously held a similar position at the SA Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) programme. Martin van Staden, also previously associated with the PBMR, is X-Energy’s head of reactor development.
The South African government stopped the PBMR programme in 2010 despite the fact that billions of taxpayer rands had already been invested in it.
Pienaar said that Mulder and Van Staden, with the help of another dozen or so former PBMR colleagues, built on their knowledge of the pebble-bed reactor in the design of X-Energy’s small reactor.
This made the firm, together with Bill Gates’ TerraPower, the leader in this field and, in 2019, they won a $1.9 billion (R34 billion) contract to build the first small nuclear reactor for Washington. It is expected to start generating power in 2027.
Pienaar says:
This is one of the projects we are working on. There are others for Canada, the firm Dow Chemical and for Nasa.
Washington’s legislation requirement of clean energy opened the door for the small nuclear power reactor.
A small reactor’s generation capacity is, by definition, less than 400MW, but it can be as small as an 8MW microreactor that can fit on a truck or even on a plane.
It’s not a quick, easy solution to power shortages, but rather a long-term solution that can play a valuable role in power supply, Pienaar says, adding that the business model for nuclear power involves a large capital outlay initially, but it is highly economical over the lifetime of the reactor.
